There were 10 times more galaxies just like our own Milky Way in the early Universe than previously thought.
This cosmic insight comes from one of the first studies of images captured by Nasa's new James Webb Space Telescope.
One of its authors, Prof Christopher Conselice from the University of Manchester, UK, said that Webb could "zoom in on the early Universe".
This yielded insights about objects in space that "we knew existed but didn't understand how and when they formed". Disc galaxies dominate the "galaxy population" today," the researcher explained.
"Our own galaxy is a disc, Andromeda (our nearest neighbour, which is 2.5 million light-years from Earth) is a disc.

The chief of the World Health Organization said the expanding monkeypox outbreak in more than 70 countries is an “extraordinary” situation that now qualifies as a global emergency, a declaration Saturday that could spur further investment in treating the once-rare disease and worsen the scramble for scarce vaccines.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the decision to issue the declaration despite a lack of consensus among experts serving on the U.N. health agency’s emergency committee. It was the first time the chief of the U.N. health agency has taken such an action.
“We have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly through new modes of transmission

Steve has mentioned the brief heat wave that brought unprecedented high temperatures to much of England, and elsewhere in Northwestern Europe. The heat wave didn’t last long–the high today in London was 79 degrees–but it prompted an outpouring of global warming hysteria.
I was reminded of visiting London around 27 years ago, in April. Then, too, the city was in the midst of an unprecedented heat wave–in April! With temperatures in the 90s and no air conditioning, everyone was sweltering. We stayed at the East India Club, and as I recall the Club, for the first time, relaxed its centuries-old requirement that coats and ties be worn

Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) said Friday on CNN’s “Newsroom” that the children of Republicans who supported former President Donald Trump will be ashamed.
Kinzinger said, “I’ve had a lot of anecdotal people call and say like a good friend said my dad was a super MAGA, he hated Adam and loved Donald Trump. He’s all in against Donald Trump because he believes he’s been lied to. But look, yeah, there may be a certain set of voters that will never pay attention. Their kids will.” He added, “I’m going to tell you, I truly believe in my heart in five years, maybe not five but definitely

As we noted earlier, we’re not hearing from Joe Biden’s doctor personally during the White House briefings. We’re getting translations of what he’s saying or written statements from the doctor. What this does is prevent reporters from being able to thoroughly question the doctor on any concerns about Biden. Meanwhile, we’re being told embarrassing things that make it sounds like we have a toddler in the office — including that Biden “cleaned his plate” and ate all his dinner. I wanted to share this additional video from White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who insisted to the reporters that they have heard “directly” from the doctor

As the 2022 midterms loom ever closer, Republicans have increased their generic ballot lead by two points in the last fortnight. The latest Rasmussen Reports poll, released Friday, reveals that voters are ready to cast a ballot for Republicans over Democrats by a 10-point margin — 49% to 39%. This is a two-point improvement from the July 9 survey, which had generic Republicans up over Democrats by eight points (47% to 39%). According to Rasmussen, when asked, “If the elections for Congress were held today, would you vote for the Republican candidate or for the Democratic candidate?”—

Most people are big fans of President Joe Biden’s $550 billion infrastructure bill — except they don’t know it’s actually been passed. That’s the conclusion of new polling that promises to further rattle the Democratic Party.
Eight months after Congress cleared the landmark legislation to overhaul the nation’s roads, bridges, rails and broadband, only 24 percent of voters are aware it’s now a law, according to new polling by the center-left think tank Third Way and Impact Research that was shared first with POLITICO.
That damning assessment of the impact of one of Biden’s most significant domestic achievements comes after White House events promoting its investments as a fulfillment

The New York Times published a series of op-eds by its opinion columnists Thursday that began with the phrase "I Was Wrong About." As part of the collection, Bret Stephens admitted he was wrong to label Trump supporters "appalling."
Stephens said, "The worst line I ever wrote as a pundit" was the first he ever wrote about Trump: "If by now you don’t find Donald Trump appalling, you’re appalling."
"This opening salvo, from August 2015, was the first in what would become dozens of columns denouncing Trump as a unique threat to American life, democratic ideals and the world itself," he continued. Stephens said he "regret[s] almost nothing

Welp, here we go again — with more ignorance of the role of the United States Supreme Court in the aftermath of the Roe overturn. Only this time, the idiocy comes from within SCOTUS, courtesy of Elena Kagan, who on Thursday claimed the legitimacy of the Court is tied to its conformity with public opinion.
Roll that over in your mind a couple of times.
Silly me. All this time, I thought the Supreme Court’s role was that of final arbiter of the law, thus ensuring the American people with the promise of equal justice under the law and, thereby, as guardian of the Constitution

WWE founder and CEO Vince McMahon, who stepped aside from his executive duties last month amid a board probe into alleged misconduct claims, is retiring from the company.
The WWE announced the decision in a statement Friday, adding that his daughter Stephanie McMahon and WWE president Nick Khan would become co-CEOs, with McMahon serving as chair. McMahon will remain the company’s majority shareholder, and he added in his statement that “I will continue to support WWE in any way I can.”
“As I approach 77 years old, I feel it’s time for me to retire as Chairman and CEO of WWE,” McMahon said in a statement.

A 43-year-old man accused of attacking Representative Lee Zeldin (R., N.Y.) with a sharp object at a campaign stop in upstate New York on Thursday evening was charged with a felony and released from custody just hours after his arrest, police said.
Zeldin, who is New York’s Republican gubernatorial candidate, was giving a speech on bail reform at a stop on his “Unite to Fire Hochul” bus tour in Perinton when David G. Jakubonis allegedly charged at him and pulled out a sharp object.
Jakubonis was charged with attempted assault in the second degree and was released on his own recognizance

Twitter reported a surprise decline in quarterly revenue on Friday — and partially blamed its ongoing battle with Elon Musk for the unexpectedly weak results.
The social media site reported $1.18 billion in revenue during the March through June quarter — a 1% year-over-year decline. Analysts had expected Twitter to post $1.34 billion in revenue, according to Refinitiv data. In a release, Twitter blamed “headwinds associated with the macro-environment as well as uncertainty related to the pending acquisition of Twitter by an affiliate of Elon Musk.”
Twitter shares were down 2.3% in pre-market at $38.60 trading on Friday.
