As Ed described earlier today, President Biden is taking some heat for his fist bump with Mohammed Bin Salman. So much for Saudi Arabia being a “pariah state.” But after the fist-bump Bidedn and MBS held a private meeting, meaning there were no cameras in the room. Team Biden, perhaps trying to soothe some of the people upset about the fist bump, is claiming that Biden confronted MBS about the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.
President Biden said Friday night that he brought up the murder of Jamal Khashoggi during his closed-door meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and told the prince that he considered him to blame.

Joe Biden has often tried to pretend he’s a tough guy who’s not to be messed with. During the 2020 campaign, he humorously claimed that Putin didn’t want him to be president because he was the only candidate who’d ever “gone toe-to-toe with him.” Biden has similarly talked a lot of tough talk about Saudi Arabia and even called the Saudi kingdom a global “pariah” due to its poor human rights record and the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. And then, of course, he went over to Saudi Arabi this week, fist-bumped with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), and maybe even had a little sleepover, for all we know.

The homeless man who allegedly murdered NASCAR star Bobby East, 37, at a California gas station has been killed in a SWAT raid.
The murder occurred in Westminster on Wednesday when the homeless man, Trent William Millsap, allegedly stabbed East in the chest as he was fueling up his vehicle. East was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital. “The victim was found on the ground suffering from a serious stab wound to the chest area,” Westminister Police said of East’s murder. “Officers attempted life saving measures until OCFA paramedics arrived and transported the victim to a local trauma center, where the victim succumbed

At 1:10 p.m. on Friday, a joint task force made up of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the Santa Ana Police Department, the Fullerton Police Department, the Brea Police Department, and investigators from the Orange County District Attorney Bureau of Investigations apprehended 20-year-old Malike Patt, and 44-year-old Jason Payne in connection with the July 11, 7-Eleven serial robberies and murders in Ontario, Upland, Riverside, Santa Ana, Brea, and La Habra. The fact that these suspects were apprehended within FIVE days of the commission of the crimes is highly unusual, if not unprecedented.

Joe Biden went hat in hand to Saudi Arabia to beg for oil, even meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after he said he wouldn’t–and after Biden called the kingdom a “pariah” nation. When he came out of the meeting, it was clear Biden had nothing, but he tried to make it appear he had something. “We had a good discussion on ensuring global energy security and adequate oil supplies to support global economic growth,” Biden said. “That will begin shortly. And…I’m doing all I can to increase the supply for the United States of America, which I expect to happen. The Saudis share that urgency and based

Andrew Sullivan doesn’t exactly sound eager to support Gov. DeSantis’ possible bid for the White House in 2024, but he does tick through the arguments against him and suggests that given a choice between what we have now and a return of Donald Trump, DeSantis may in fact be the best choice.
So get real: If you really believe that Trump remains a unique threat to constitutional democracy in America, you need to consider the possibility that, at this point, a Republican is probably your best bet.
One stands out, and it’s Ron DeSantis, the popular governor of Florida. And yet so many Never Trumpers,

Joe Biden once dreamed of an FDR-size domestic-reform agenda. But the collapse of negotiations in Congress on the compromise of the compromise of that agenda will ensure he achieves nothing of the sort — not Roosevelt-size, not Obama-size, nor even Clinton-size. (Bill Clinton managed to increase taxes on the rich, expand the Earned Income Tax Credit, and create a health-care benefit for poor children.) In addition to losing its chance to address any domestic social need in an enduring way, the administration is also having imperiled its global leadership on climate change and a global corporate minimum tax, two measures that hinged on Biden getting

Ruy Teixeira is one of Washington’s most prominent left-leaning think-tank scholars, a fixture at the Center for American Progress since the liberal organization’s founding in 2003. But as of August 1, he’ll have a new professional home: The American Enterprise Institute, the longtime conservative redoubt that over the years has employed the likes of Newt Gingrich, Dinesh D’Souza, and Robert Bork.
Teixeira, whose role in the Beltway scrum often involved arguing against calls to move right on economic issues, insists his own policy views haven’t changed — but says the current cultural milieu of progressive organizations “sends me running screaming from the left.”

Ruth Sent Us, the group which posted home address for the six conservative Supreme Court Justices and invited people to protest at their homes on a weekly basis has been permanently banned by Twitter. Ruth Sent Us first posted the home addresses more than two months ago. As I pointed out at the time, they were using a specific gimmick to create plausible deniability. The addresses listed on their map gave the street name and city. But if you followed a link to their TikTok channel, they had previously posted videos shot at all six of the justices’ homes. In some of the clips, they would walk by a mailbox

Republicans are actively courting Hispanic voters in key competitive House districts, hoping to peel away voters from Democrats repeating their historical pattern of investing little and late in reaching out to Latinos.
The GOP’s approach is a danger to Democrats, as Hispanic voters are likely to play a key role in at least a dozen districts in the November midterm elections.
“It couldn’t be a starker contrast between Republicans and Democrats as we engage and do outreach to minority voters, and specifically the Hispanic community,” said Danielle Alvarez, communications director for the GOP.

Joe Manchin on Thursday rejected Senate Democrats’ proposed energy and climate investments, as well as their goals of increasing taxes on the wealthy and large corporations, according to a Democrat briefed on the discussions.
Instead the West Virginia senator said “unequivocally” during a meeting with Majority Leader Chuck Schumer that he will only support reducing drug prices and a two-year extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies as components of a party-line bill designed to evade a filibuster, the person said.
Manchin’s rejection at the meeting blew up weeks of discussions over a larger legislative package. It leaves a slim health-care focused bill as the only option

In a Wednesday tweet, the Associated Press Stylebook reiterated guidance advising journalists to refrain from using the terms “assault weapon” and “assault rifle,” which they call “highly politicized.”
“The preferred term for a rifle that fires one bullet each time the trigger is pulled, and automatically reloads for a subsequent shot, is a semi-automatic rifle. An automatic rifle continuously fires rounds if the trigger is depressed and until its ammunition is exhausted,” reads a July 2022 style tip, recommending their usage over more general references to “assault” weaponry.
According to the Stylebook, which is adhered to by newsrooms across the country,
