The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) announced on Tuesday that it will officially rename the monkeypox to address concerns about the stigma and racism associated with the word.
Monkeypox has thus far infected over 1,600 people in more than two dozen countries, first breaking out in the United States this past May in Massachusetts and possibly having originated in Canada. W.H.O. director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Tuesday that the organization will be “working with partners and experts from around the world on changing the name of monkeypox virus, its clades, and the disease it causes.”

Worked in a health unit for several years, and then a hospital for a few more. The thing I never understood was why they would change the name of some things, especially immunizations. But renaming monkeypox isn't an anomaly. It happens in medicine. Bipolar used to be manic depressive. Spastic colon became irritable bowel. But who knew monkey's were racist.

CDC says this: "The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox."
Again, woke scientists try to bend the arc of truth so monkeys aren't shamed.

Guess the CDC has addressed and cured all manner of illness and disease so that they have time to worry about sickness names being PC/woke.

Are they going to rename chicken pox, small pox, swine flu, cat scratch fever, and whooping cough too? When an organization cares mostly about labels and names you know they have become a racket.

They really need to rename their organization due to the terrible embarrassment it inflicts on a great rock and roll band.

Every time I go to the doctor they go over my list of meds. Most of which I have taken for decades. And I don't recognize any of them because the names have changed several times.

I am reading a fascinating book - Dr. Mary's Monkey.
Here is a quote from the author about fifty years ago, when he was in his teens in New Orleans:
"The good news is if there is a bizarre global epidemic involving cancer and a monkey virus thirty years from now, at least we will know where it came from."

Racism against whom, monkeys? That's about as silly as it gets. What about chicken pox? There are more chickens in the world than monkeys. Swine flu? My pigs are offended. Bird flu? Cat scratch fever. The people running the show have a bad case of Head Up the Butt disease and I fear there is no cure.

Ya'll remember when Roseanne Barr said that Valerie Jarrett was the product of the muslim brother hood and "Planet of the Apes " . Barr was vilified for her racist comment. Now the name " monkeypox " is racist . The left is very , very sensitive about perceptions re themselves. Everyone and everything else , not so much.

This is getting beyond ridiculous. Monkeypox originated in central and west Africa back in the mid 50's among people who ate bush meat as the main source of meat for their dietary needs. Bush meat includes some varieties of small monkeys. Hence the name, Monkeypox.
