Washington - Russia's military buildup near Ukraine has expanded to include supplies of blood along with other medical materials that would allow it to treat casualties, in yet another key indicator of Moscow's military readiness, three U.S. officials tell Reuters.
Current and former U.S. officials say concrete indicators -- like blood supplies -- are critical in determining whether Moscow would be prepared to carry out an invasion, if Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to do so.

A strange thing is happening to the venerable magazine Scientific American. It has decided to kick its science-loving readers in the teeth and embrace a modern equivalent of Lysenkoism—the doctrine that required Soviet biologists to ignore evolution and the genetics of plants. The great biologist Edward O. Wilson died on December 26. Few readers of Scientific American could be unaware of Wilson’s towering contributions to biology and conservation, or of his rare gifts as a synthesizer and writer. They surely didn’t expect that the oeuvre of this globally renowned scientist would be labeled (snip) as “built on racist ideas.”

This will be bittersweet news for a lot of people. A five-judge panel has ruled that Pennsylvania’s universal mail-in voting law violates the state’s constitution, an argument conservatives have been making since it was enacted in 2019. That election law went on to play a pivotal role in delivering the state for Joe Biden in 2020, who trailed on Election Night, but pulled ahead as more and more mail-in votes were counted. The court’s decision essentially made the case that any law to make mail-in ballots universal versus only being allowed in defined circumstances needed to come via an amendment to the state’s constitution, given the current language.

Disgraced New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's administration confirmed Thursday that thousands more nursing home residents died of COVID-19 than the state's official tallies had previously acknowledged, dealing another blow to his image as a pandemic hero. The surprise development, after months of the state refusing to divulge its true numbers, showed that at least 12,743 long-term care residents died of the virus as of Jan. 19, far greater than the official tally of 8,505 on that day, a 49 percent jump cementing New York's toll as one of the highest in the nation. As someone who is not American, my prevailing image of the U.S. has been one of an enormous, extravagant carnival. Static geographically but traveling existentially, it teems with the exotic and the entertaining. Are there carnies trying to rip off naive souls? Of course. Is there a House of Horrors? Sure. But the whole is still vivid and life-affirming.This image, idealistic as it is, is under threat. Money-grubbing contractors are ramping up prices. Humorless scolds in management are closing the best rides. Below the surface, meanwhile, thieves are running rampant and the bodies of the sick and injured stud the fairground. But ever since 2017, when Senate Republicans invoked the nuclear option to confirm Supreme Court justices at a simple majority, instead of at the usual 60 votes necessary to break a filibuster, there has been procedurally little minorities can do to prevent a nomination from moving forward (the outright lies, smears, and chaos tactics Senate Democrats employed against Justice Brett Kavanaugh notwithstanding).

Several state courts issued major election integrity rulings this week that could have a profound effect on elections in swing states ahead of the 2022 midterms.
The Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court ruled on Friday that the state’s “no-excuse” mail-in voting law, also known as Act 77, violates the state’s Constitution which requires in-person voting for most people who don’t fit the state’s list of exceptions.
In a 3-2 decision, the court’s conservative majority determined that the expansion of mail-in voting put ballots in the hands of constitutionally ineligible people.

A Pennsylvania state court on Friday struck down the law allowing any voter to cast a ballot by mail, handing a victory to Republican lawmakers who sought to curtail the practice amid former President Donald Trump’s attacks on mail voting.

Kiribati finally began reopening this month, allowing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to charter a plane to bring home 54 of the island nation’s citizens.(Snip)Officials tested each returning passenger three times in nearby Fiji, required that they be vaccinated, and put them in quarantine with additional testing when they arrived home. It wasn’t enough. More than half the passengers tested positive for the virus, which has now slipped out into the community

The newspaper hit the front porches of the wind-scarred prairie town on a Thursday afternoon: Coronavirus numbers were spiking in the farming communities of western Minnesota.
“Covid-19 cases straining rural clinics, hospitals, staff,” read the front-page headline. Vaccinate to protect yourselves, health officials urged.
But ask around Benson, stroll its three-block business district, and some would tell a different story: (snip) In one house is Reed Anfinson, publisher, editor, photographer and reporter for the Monitor-News. Most weeks, he writes every story on the paper’s front page. He wrote that story on clinics struggling with COVID-19.

An Indian father who froze to death alongside his wife and two children worked as a teacher and farmed his own land before they made the desperate and dangerous journey to cross in the United States from Canada, where they trudged through waist-deep snow in a blizzard for 11 hours. Jagdish Patel, 39 and Vaishailben Patel, 37 were found dead with their children Vihangi, 11 and Dharkmik, three, in a field north of the US border on January 19 as temperatures plummeted to as low as -40F near Manitoba, Canada with blowing snow and poor visibility advisories issued on the night of the four's ill-fated trek last week.

Penzey's Spices, the Milwaukee-based company that held "Republicans are Racist Weekend" sale on Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend earlier this month, is now dealing with a massive loss of customers and is now all but begging for new business.
"After starting the year with All Republicans are Republicans and following up with Republicans are Racists we’ve set a nice little Boycott Penzeys! surge in motion," Penzey's CEO Bill Penzey said in an email to customers Friday. "It certainly wasn’t unexpected, but if it’s within your means, you picking up a small stack of Gift Cards would help."

George Orwell's iconic novel 1984, written in 1949 about the horrors of censorship and the threat of authoritarianism, is being censored by a university. The University of Northampton in Orwell's own England has issued a trigger warning on the book, with staff claiming that the book contains "explicit material" and that some student may find the work to be "offensive and unsettling." The Daily Mail uncovered this via a Freedom of Information request, and 1984 is one of several books that have been slapped with a trigger warning for students at the university who are studying what's called Identity Under Construction.

The whole world is waiting nervously for developments in Ukraine. (snip) are those individuals who are comfortably ensconced at the top of power willing to pay any price themselves? (snip) Vladimir Putin is now virtually out of business; he has delegated the routine functions of the head of state to his mediocre subordinates, himself becoming a Kremlin recluse. The real power in the country is not with him, but with those who have money. (snip) there is something that is really scary for those in Russia who have money and power — the West can cut off the payment system SWIFT

CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper posted and later deleted a report on social media reporting on President Joe Biden’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which went poorly for the American leader according to a CNN reporter who reported on the call. Per the report, Biden told Zelensky that a Russian invasion of Ukraine was virtually certain and that the country’s capital city of Kyiv would be “sacked” and potentially even “occupied” by Russian forces within weeks. (snip) During the meeting, Zelensky allegedly told Biden to “calm down” when the US president insisted that a Russian invasion was “imminent.”

A Pittsburgh bridge collapsed early Friday, according to authorities, just hours before President Biden was scheduled to visit the city to talk about infrastructure. No injuries were immediately reported, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety, which reported a “confirmed bridge collapse” at around 6:50 a.m. A photo from KDKA shows at least four vehicles, including a Port Authority bus, on the bridge near Forbes and Braddock avenues, which splits the Point Breeze, Regent Square and Squirrel Hill neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Another vehicle is shown dangling near the edge of the collapsed bridge. Police, fire and EMS personnel are responding to the

Rep. Lee Zeldin slammed Vice President Kamala Harris' trip to Honduras Thursday on Holocaust Memorial Day to meet the new president of Honduras whose inner circle have made anti-Semitic remarks as 'totally disgusting and unacceptable.'
The VP tweeted a tribute to the six million Jews who were slaughtered as she landed in the country.
She wrote: 'Today, we honor the six million Jews and other victims murdered by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust. We must teach our children the truth about the atrocities of the Holocaust, so that together we give meaning to that timeless pledge: never again'.

Hundreds of Canadian truckers plan to descend on the nation's capital of Ottawa on Friday in an attempt to shut down the city in protest of a COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The mandate, initially enacted by the Canadian federal government and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, went into effect on January 15. The mandate requires any truck driver crossing into Canada from the United States to provide proof of vaccination. A similar mandate, which went into effect on January 22, requires the same proof of vaccination for truckers driving from Canada into the United States.

It’s a curious thing: Obvious, credible signs about a prominent political family emerge, but federal authorities at the Justice Department and elsewhere do nothing. Meanwhile, leftist media “watchdogs,” in a classic case of gaslighting, pretend that nothing has happened.
So it is with Joe Biden and his errant son, Hunter.
A new book (“Red-Handed: How American Elites Get Rich Helping China Win“) by investigative researcher and Government Accountability Institute President Peter Schweizer makes a powerful case that the Biden family has profited handsomely from its cozy ties to China’s ruling Communist regime.

Prince Charles, Prince William and other senior royals are said to be 'deeply shocked' by Prince Andrew's demand for a 'trial by jury' to tackle accusations of rape and sexual assault made by a Jeffrey Epstein 'sex slave'. Members of the Royal Family will urge the Duke of York to settle with Virginia Roberts Giuffre, which could cost him £10million. Senior royals are said to be exerting pressure on him to pay off Ms Roberts to avoid corroding his mother's Platinum Jubilee, fearing a trial could be 'many times worse' than his car crash BBC Newsnight interview.

Republican State Rep. Nick Freitas of Virginia has had enough of Democrats accusing anyone who opposes them of racism and sexism. During a floor speech this week, he went after Democrats for this and his speech was so amazing that it got applause afterwards. Other Republicans should study this speech. Real Clear Politics provides a partial transcript: NICK FREITAS: I was asked by a colleague of mine on the other side of the aisle, someone I actually deeply respect, and she asked me, was I going to be ‘nice’ this session?

A Los Angeles County judge on Thursday ordered Hannah Tubbs, a transgender California woman, to serve two years in a juvenile facility after she pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl in 2014.
Before doing so, the judge criticized far-left District Attorney George Gascon, whose office declined to prosecute the repeat offender as an adult.
Tubbs, 26, recently pleaded guilty to molesting the girl in a women's bathroom eight years ago when Tubbs was two weeks away from turning 18. At the time of the crime, she identified as male and went by James Tubbs.

Elizabeth Warren, a mediocre law professor who parlayed a fake Native American identity into a gig at Harvard and a seat in the United States Senate, thought that, once in government, she’d try her hand at censorship. When Joseph Mercola and Ronnie Cummins wrote a book about COVID with which Warren disagreed, she used her position as a Senator to try to get Amazon to censor the book. Although Chelsea Green Publishing filed suit in November, people are finally becoming aware of the suit.
I’m always amazed when someone who ought to know the law doesn’t—or feels entitled to ignore it.

A foreign journalist challenged White House press secretary Jen Psaki Thursday to explain whether “America is back,” given the Biden administration’s many foreign policy failures.Biden has repeatedly used the phrase “America is back” to claim success in foreign policy, based on the partisan claim that President Donald Trump had withdrawn from the world, despite his diplomatic successes and the lack of war during his tenure.Psaki cited Biden’s “engagements” with other governments and his work in “rebuilding our relationships” with allies, which were allegedly “frayed” by the prior administration.Transcript via the White House:
