George Orwell's iconic novel 1984, written in 1949 about the horrors of censorship and the threat of authoritarianism, is being censored by a university. The University of Northampton in Orwell's own England has issued a trigger warning on the book, with staff claiming that the book contains "explicit material" and that some student may find the work to be "offensive and unsettling." The Daily Mail uncovered this via a Freedom of Information request, and 1984 is one of several books that have been slapped with a trigger warning for students at the university who are studying what's called Identity Under Construction.

Let me know when they “label” Vonnegut’s Fahrenheit 450. They refuse to see the complete irony.

Read the headline to the lady Chihuahua and her remark was it was meant to be unsettling. Totalitarianism is always based on lies. Truth and logic left the building long ago.
Hope they keep on lying. People don't like being lied to. Many people already see the lies. Many more will when the lies impact them. The only ones supporting their lies are on their payroll.

While this is in Britain, American "education" will follow. Most of us of a certain age read "1984" in seventh or eighth grade...I don't remember any weepy reactions, although there was a level of sobering that occurred. American education has gone from encouraging curiosity to dissuading anyone from straying from the path. ("Follow the science" is a prime example.)
As far as Big Brother, we have invited him into our lives and our homes. Have a "smart TV", Siri/Alexa devices, an unblinking camera on your PC? After 9/11 there were more than a few proclaiming "I have nothing to hide" as government ran roughshod for "security". How'd that FISA court work out, not to mention the crack FBI and other law enforcement and intell community agencies? Some tried to warn...and now there are unblinking eyes everywhere, it seems.
And that doesn't cover the vast amount of information Americans provide freely about themselves - from social media to supermarket discount cards. And it's all "for sale" by someone. It's a big money maker. Stat that! The government buys this data by the carload. It's called "open source data", and they need no warrants to obtain and use. It is oftentimes used to track bad guys, like drug cartel leaders, but it can be used on anyone. People just don't get it.

Obviously, the irony escapes them.

In my time when we read 1984 it wasn't so "offensive and unsettling" because we all thought it could never happen. Now it is very "offensive and unsettling" because of how accurate it is. While reading now you go yep seen it done it.

Not to worry, snowflakes. I hear the Orwell estate is working on a new "woke" version of 1984. Gee, I couldn't write sarcasm that good.
I'm thinking Orwell did pretty well in predicting the future. He did miss three things:
1. The year.
2. The two minutes of hate have been replaced with 24/7 Trump hate.
3. The Ministry of Truth isn't a drab, grey, downtown bureaucracy. It's at all those pretty pastel colored Silicon Valley tech campuses.

I read “1984” on my own volition in high school. I didn’t need to be warned about the book’s contents. Our minds were a lot more free then. These tyrants wanting to control our thinking would most likely endorse having lead-lined boxes clamped on our heads to prevent any contrary thought from coming in.

Coming from the left, a trigger warning is a BOH (Badge of Honor) and if I were a writer and my book DID NOT get a trigger warning, I would feel I had failed.

Why would it trigger? Isn't his version of the world what Leftists have been pushing for the past decades? Or maybe they don't want the students learning that the stuff they are pushing is not new after all.

I am surprised that he university is trying to censor George Orwell's novel 1984. The radical left has been using it as a "How To" manual to implement draconian authoritarianism, misinformation and propaganda to manipulate and control the thoughts and actions of the people. This gives the Government absolute POWER! Readers might the book "unsettling" when they realize how far down this dark path we have progressed. But, radicals will love it.
Perhaps, the university is using reverse psychology. Radicals love to do the opposite of what they are told.

In "1984," when you ready the explanation for "War is Peace" you might want consider that U.S. has been involved in a near continuous string of military conflicts since WW II. And, it looks like we are being set up for another.

My wife and I visited Barcelona a few years ago. In the Placa de George Orwell, they have--you guessed it--security cameras. Big Brother is out to get all of us, including George Orwell, at the universities and everywhere else.
