For many years—most of my politically cognizant life, in fact—I felt secure in my politics. Truth and justice, I believed, leaned leftward. If you were some version of a decent human being, you cared about those less fortunate than you, which meant that you supported a whole host of measures designed to even the playing field a little. Sometimes, these measures had unintended consequences (see under: Stalin, Josef), but that wasn’t reason enough to despair of the long march to equality.

Great read. I hope Democrats wake up to the realization that their political party is not what it pretends to be, just like we found out about our political party. The entrenched political establishment is out of control and must be reeled in.

Not be too braggy about it. But I came to these conclusions fairly early in my life. Never had to make the Turn!

"The entrenched political establishment?" When you think of the Deep State, think of Dink-Lover-in-Chief, Turtle McConnell.

This is a wonderful essay! Do read the whole thing. Slowly. Then read it again.
Thanks, OP.

What a summary of the child-like mindset of leftism. The desperate desire to belong, to be embraced, to be part of the “in” crowd. These are weak, easily manipulated people.

Do I ever get it. I was a liberal back in college.
For about three days, anyway.

Must read indeed. As John McClane said in Die Hard, "Welcome to the party, pal."

Guy needs to speak to how much damage was done by his support for liberals (not Progressives)

Excellent essay. I identify, having lost many former close friends. They refuse to even discuss the issue, responding often with anger and distain, never humor. There is a fundamental difference in perception of reality between “conservative” and “liberal.

The devastation wrought by him, and all those like him, on America is beyond repair. It's like smashing a Waterford Crystal vase and then realising you really shouldn't have smashed it.
It is much too little, and much, much too late now. I'm not impressed.

This is an outstanding Must Read! We have seen how politics have evolved into failing miserably in America's cities, states and now even the country itself is less peaceful, secure and free. As the UNITED States of America we had better return to the Constitutional principles of Life and Liberty for ALL, because the devastating alternative we see emerging is too destructive to comprehend. America's heritage if freedom, not political tyranny!

I agree this was a good article; I had to stop 3 or 4 paragraphs into it to catch my breath and check his deep bio. Then I finished reading about his Turn. Glad he made it safely.

I made the Turn when Ronald Magnifico Regan replaced the hapless and embarrassing Jimmy Carter! I’m indeed free and shall remain so! Friends lost? Absolutely, but friends who inhibit freedom are not worth it!

This article is a great read. I went through The Turn just before Clinton's reelection, thanks in great part to Lucianne. It was slow in coming but I haven't looked back.

This really is an excellent essay! I made the Turn myself sometime during the GWHB administration. I saw an up and coming BJC and knew instinctively what a slimy snake oil salesman he was, but I watched my family members, including my mother, fall for his lies hook, line and sinker.
By then, I was listening religiously to El Rushbo and was able to turn my sister using his lessons. My mother turned herself sometime during the first term of Clinton sleaze. We have never looked back.
I have family members who have yet to make the Turn. We don't discuss politics when we get together. Here's hoping the vast majority of this nation makes the Turn before the next election!!

As 18 said, I have a couple of lefty relatives but we never discuss politics. It’s pointless anyway because they don’t use logic or common sense. They also have no sense of humor regarding politics and get angry if anybody disagrees with them.
