The Paradox That Fuels Our Divided Politics

American politics is caught in a perverse paradox. The bases of both parties would like nothing more than to destroy the other party. But it is precisely this animus that prevents them from accomplishing their goal. That’s because the best strategy for partisans to wreak havoc in the other party is to pursue bipartisanship when they’re in power.
When Barack Obama came into office with majorities in Congress, he opted to push his agenda on a party-line basis, starting with the 2009 stimulus package that passed the Senate with only three Republican votes and the 2010 Affordable Care Act that got no Republican support in the Senate.

"The bases of both parties would like nothing more than to destroy the other party."
Another false equivalence from a source that's become reliably demented. Tell me about all of the "Republican riots" that occurred over the past year, Zippy.

The unaffordable care act.
I tried to file a claim on my insurance for a roof that the wind tore up on a corn crib on a farm homestead that I bought. The insurance agent said that my insurance didnt cover it, I said I would have to buy insurance that does cover it. He said, yeah, if you want protection from such in the future, you will. I said, WHAT? Why cant I get it to cover pre existing conditions?

I read the article, but the author's point escapes me. Too many half-truths.

Jonah is trying way too hard to be analytical. I guess he’s forgotten how Obama pushed things through Congress that not only “fundamentally changed” American and headed up down the road to socialism, a road majority of Americans didn’t want to go down while the rest of Americans are under a false impression because of decades of sloppy education that socialism will work. Now it has evolved into the socialism wannabes stamping their feet like spoiled children and resorting to cheating and violence to get their own way. It’s beyond comparing apples to oranges, and Biden’s unchecked spending and ridiculous green new deal that defies common sense and breaks the bank - trying to make all that sound reasonable, well Jonah, you’ve gone over the edge, sweetheart!

Three thoughts from the article that leave me dumbfounded:
- "The bases of both parties would like nothing more than to destroy the other party." Yeah after getting beaten in the streets for exercising free speech and the right to assemble, we're a little frazzled. But remind me, what is it we did to them? Oh that's right. We disagreed with them on policy.
- "If Trump had opened with an infrastructure plan. . . ." W,TF? Yeah, if Trump had just acted like a Big Government Democrat, it would have been so much better.
-" He said, ‘We don’t have time. I’m not going to take a victory lap.’" Again W,TF? Quoting Biden as a historical source of Obama not being a braggart? Did that come after the greek column and "we're the one we've been waiting for?"

Poor Jonah, he stays confused these days. I could care less about destroying the Democrat Party. I'm more concerned about saving the United States of America. If Democrats would like to help in that effort, then they are welcome to join us, but if they continue to go down the leftist rabbit hole with the likes of AOC, then game on. It's not about party, it's about the future of the country.

The best story Jonah ever told was regarding the time his father saw him in pain because he’d rubbed his eyes while having hot sauce on his fingers and Dad apologized for not teaching him not to rub his eyes with hot sauce.
That’s Jonah in a nutshell.

I thought this was what you anti-Trumpers wished for, Jonah? Put him in the dumpster with McConell, Haley, Noem, and so on.

Too much credit for power is given to the political parties involved without mentioning the huge population of stupid and greedy people we have fostered in America since FDR and the willingness of the democrats to shred the Constitution by breaking every law in the country including stealing an election. Georgia was not lost through Trump's tweets it was lost through huge bribes and heavy cheating. Republicans are a bit more shy about breaking the law or at least can hide it better. The biggest sin of both sides is in being self-serving glorified welfare bums instead of leaders.

Here's what's perverse...our government was set up to make it very, very difficult to pass laws under a very restrictive Constitution. The three co-equal branches were created to keep an eye on one another, that checks and balances thing. Today, the Executive runs unfettered issuing orders, the Congress writes laws that authorizes the bureaucrats to do whatever, and the Courts have become complicit. When people shout "The government must do something" they should understand that the government is empowered to do very little...inviting more is setting stage for a loss of liberty. Liberty...a very cheap commodity to those afraid of having it.

I didn't click on the article, either. I came here just to read the comments once I saw the author's name knowing I would be entertained.

Good point #12. Our problem is that regarding Liberty they have somehow succeeded in creating so many who are more afraid of having it than of losing it.

It seems like Republicans are always yakking it up about bipartisanship. And often just completely giving in to the Dems. That's what the McCain and Graham duo were all about. Has Jonah not noticed this over the decades?
