Long Beach—Kroger is closing two of its stores, Ralphs and Food 4 Less, on Saturday after the City of Long Beach mandated that the company pay employees $4 extra an hour in “hero pay” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
As customers came by the store on Saturday, there wasn’t much left to buy and the shelves were visibly empty, but people in the neighborhood said they wanted to shop there one more time.(Snip) Employees tell CBSLA that the empty buildings are slated to be used for storage and then eventually shutter, leaving residents with little idea about what’s to come of the properties.
The profit margin in grocery stores is about the same as in restaurants, very little. Without volume they cannot make a profit (or is that a dirty word?). Payroll is one of their biggest overhead costs and when you mandate that kind of wage increase you also mandate closing the doors.

Everybody's a hero these days. It sure doesn't mean the same anymore from even a couple of years ago.

Considering that many food stores in large cities have very high shoplifting and theft rates, I am sure their margins are quite thin. Funny-guys city council members state they are going to "investigate" Kroger's decision to close. Another example of "Socialism is fine until you run out of other people's money."

And this is how you end up with a government that dictates what children WILL DO when they grow up... you WILL be a store worker... you WILL be a doctor. You WILL be a bus driver.
I always wondered how the USSR ended up making these minds of dictatorial decisions... now I think I know why.

My local Walmart keeps Dove body wash and bars of soap in a locked case. They lock up Dove! I asked why and the clerk told me people steal it. Yeah, right. I left there and went to a different chain store and all their Dove was on the front shelf at a big discount. Crazy stuff in this country lately.

Seattle's city council has also mandated 'hero's pay' for grocery stores in the city. Krogers has shut two of their stores so far, (these stores go by the name QFC). In my town of Shoreline (we share a border with Seattle), last week it was on the news that the owner of a local grocery store is raising his employees pay by $4 an hour and making it retroactive to January 2020. He's the real hero.

There isn't a Demon-Rat in government on any level that has actually taken and understood Economics 101 in college.
If they did, they would never do anything as stupid as raising the minimum wage, raising taxes, or mandating extra costs to businesses. The cause and effect is just too obvious for anyone with more than 6 working brain cells, which leaves out all lie-berals!!!!

No one should be elected to office unless they pass a real Econ course with at least a B grade.

A city council can "investigate" al they want, but they can't compel a company to keep an unprofitable store open....yet.

And the other people who worked despite the government's efforts to put us all out of a job? Cops, Fire & rescue, utility workers, home health aides....Just plain store owners and workers...

Going to work does not make one a hero. Like so many other words lately, it has been dumbed down so completely it means nothing.

Heroes are in Afghanistan and other hellholes around the world working amidst zinging bullets and other munitions. Stocking cans at Food 4 Less doesn't come within a mile of a soldier's heroics for just being there.

Is that on top of the $15 an hour minimum wage? Sorry business owners, but you are doing the right thing.

Who says the city council is worthless? Here, they've made a food desert, thrown a few hundred people out of work, and created an two empty lots that will become storage facilities, or maybe a place to put crack shacks for the homeless.
