Canada’s Liberal Party won a fourth consecutive election, giving a mandate to former central banker Mark Carney after a campaign in which he pledged to boost economic growth and stand up to US President Donald Trump in a trade war. Liberal candidates were leading or elected in 135 of the 343 seats, ahead of the Conservative Party with 88 as of 10:14 p.m. Ottawa time. The Liberals will secure enough seats to try to form a government, but it’s still unclear whether they’ll win a majority or be forced to work with other parties to pass legislation, according to projections from major TV networks.

I hope Mark Carney and the Liberal Party have the grace to effusively thank President Trump for his help in ensuring their victory. The Conservatives were polling way ahead of the Liberals until Trump began to insult Canada with talk of it becoming the 51st state.
The voters also couldn’t have been pleased with him complaining that Canada was ripping off the USA, that Canada was a deadbeat and, to add injury to insult, imposed tariffs despite brokering a trade deal with Canada less than four years ago. After that the Conservatives didn’t stand a chance. I hope Trump realizes the hubris can slap the best of us.

Last I checked Libs were "winning" by 1.4%, with 4% of the vote still uncounted, and not enough seats to control the parliment/form a govt. They will have to bring another party in to actually "Win" . Conserv gained 26pts over the last election.

#6 is absolutely correct. You can thank Trump for the Conservative loss. There are times when our president needs to be quiet. The conservatives were pulling ahead until Trump started talking. You ask your self WHY did he do this?

Our Canadian cousins apparently have not yet learned where the liberals are taking them. And unfortunately, President Trump's intemperate comments only pushed them to get there faster.
The last time I flew into Vancouver BC I thought I had mistakenly landed in New Delhi or Karachi. Like America, Canada is being transitioned by a migrant invasion. It's happening more slowly than in the U.S., but it's definitely happening. And their government showed its future intentions by the way it handled their trucker demonstration. Arrests and financial confiscations are in their future.
They don't like what Trump has been saying, but they're going to like where they are heading even less. See you when you get over your snit and eventually escape to the Land of the Free, eh?

Some of you obviously need to do your research about why Trump said what he did about Canada. Here's a hint: America first means that Canada does not have the option to continue screwing over America. If Canadians can't survive without taking advantage of their neighbor, then they deserve what they get, and that is NOT Trump's fault!

Mindless, needless political rhetoric on both sides of the border, including Trump's, gave the election to the Liberals.

They say that you can always expect that Canada will do the wrong thing when it comes to politics. My grandmother was from Nova Scotia and maybe that’s part of the reason why she came to the USA. On the other hand this election was pretty much forecast after Trump went along slamming Canada claiming that he intended to scoop Canada up as the 51st State. As Canada is a proud country, and a member of the British Commonwealth, that fought alongside the USA in most of the past big wars. In reality it’s more likely that Canada will join into an international alliance with Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom to become one of four equal States together, than become the 51st State of the USA. That’s up to the Canadians to figure out.

The despicable Trudeau replaced by the despicable Carney. Neither should ever be allowed into the US. We should increase the tariffs to offset the scam of Canada using the border to export their products here, and use US defense to protect their socialist state.

#9: It's worse than you think. I watched an all-day podcast from Canada covering the election, and at the very end of that podcast in the wee hours of the morning, it became clear that the Liberals would be able to form a coalition with a (heavily weakened) NDP to get a +1 seat majority. The NDP will not wish to see another election any time soon and Carney will get 4 years to run the country into the ground. The only question now seems to be when Alberta secedes, and how many other western provinces join it. Absent Alberta, the other western provinces will be expected to step up their "extortion" payments (the Canadians euphemistically call them equalization payments) to levels that will bankrupt them. They won't do that -- they'll join Alberta instead and secede. And what's left of Canada will become financially unstable in a hurry.

For everybody else, this election was an almost even split, roughly 42% each, between the Liberals and Conservatives, with the remainder held by the minor parties. Due to the construction of the districts (called "ridings" in Canada), which might have been gerrymandered, the Liberals got about 18 more seats than the Conservatives. This means that Carney really has nothing approaching a "mandate" from Canadian voters, and that there is plenty of reason for President Trump to negotiate with Carney as if he's negotiating with a rag doll...
Also, the complaints here about PDJT interfering with the election are misplaced. Reality is that the Liberals jabbed, juked, and danced, and the Conservatives ran as if Trudeau was still PM and nothing the Liberals did affected public sentiment. That was wrong. Pierre Poilievre is a policy wonk who ran on a Reaganesque platform but failed to embrace Reagan's admonition about maintaining a contrast with his opponents. Reagan called it "Bold colors, not pale pastels." The Liberals made things pastel by stealing portions of Poilievre's platform, and Poilievre did little to restore the bold contrast. Poilievre also joined in on bashing Trump, contributing to his own demise, when he could have instead pinned Trump's behavior entirely on the Liberals.
In short, Poilievre's policy positions were like Reagan's, but he wasn't a great communicator like Reagan. For that shortcoming, Canada wrote its epitaph yesterday.

6, the idea that Trump caused the Canadian Conservative Party to lose is weird. Weird, weird.
What that means is millions of voters in a foreign country made a dramatic shift in their world view and changed their votes because the leader of a foreign nation made some nasty jokes about their country.

Addendum: The data above about Liberals having an 18-seat majority was where things stood in the wee hours of the morning. This morning, it appears that they widened their majority to 24 seats, but will still have minority government in coalition with the weakened NDP. Sad footnote for Pierre Poilievre: With 80% of the vote counted in his suburban Ottawa riding, he's on track to lose his seat to a Liberal. So his career in politics may be coming to a close. Canadians who pinned their hopes on him will be sadly cast adrift...

If King Charles made some nasty comments about the US still being a colony, you wouldn't suddenly change your vote to the democrats.
I assure you none of my Canadian family made their vote decision based on Trump saying anything. The leftists voted left, the conservatives voted conservative. The same way they always have.

To dispense with some stuff up front, the Canadian polling stations are completely and carefully monitored. Canadians are required to show both personal identification with their address and their voter registration card in order to vote. Voting in Canada is far better regulated than we in the US have been doing until recently.
#6 is exactly right. This outcome was entirely predictable and completely preventable. President Trump made the election about himself, as he tends to do, and completely undermined the Conservative Party's chances to win on the real issue, which was a decade of Liberal incompetence.
Supporting President Trump in the many courageous, difficult, and necessary things he is doing for our country does not obligate us to overlook his mistakes.
This was an unforced error.

The unpleasant reality is that Canada spends next to nothing on its own defense because it is shielded by our nuclear umbrella. It "repays" us by ripping us off on trade and winking as fentanyl and illegals, including terrorists, cross our border. Both the Liberal and "Conservative" parties campaigned as though the only problem with this arrangement is that Americans are fed up with it. Not a dime's worth of difference.

#31: Your observation may be spot-on and may be what PDJT was thinking -- that it wouldn't make much difference to America who won Canada's election. Personally, I hope that PDJT gives Carney the cold shoulder and leaves him with this singular message: Fix your fentanyl, border security, and money laundering problems, and afterward we'll have a discussion about tariffs. For now, nothing changes, and until visible and concrete action takes place on the issues that led to the punitive tariffs, nothing will change.

#6 Canadians have always been very liberal people and that's why nothing President Trump would have said or say, would have made a difference on how they voted. PDT is just a convenient scapegoat for those who want to blame him for the election outcome.
We have visited Canada a few times and it's like visiting S.F. As a Christian, we know how intolerant their govt. is towards people of faith and the persecution of them. During Covid pastors were arrested and put in jail. So tell me, an intolerant govt. towards people of faith and no pushback from the people are going to vote conservative? I think not. Canada is like Europe/the EU.

Here's a small dose of "tough love" reality for any of our Canadian friends who may be lurking here. Wake up! The reason you can be liberal and mistakenly believe you are intellectually and culturally more refined and accepting is because, like many youngest children, you have a bigger brother who has to fight your fights for you, do the toughest jobs, pick up the tabs on many things, and generally keep you safe all the time.
And no, like big brothers, we don't want your appreciation for everything we've done and keep doing for you. Just grow up and don't be stupid. Especially not liberal stupid.

Not true #6 and #11. This outcome wasn't related to Trump. My brother who lives up in central B.C., reports that pre-election polls all favored Pierre Poilievre and the conservative party to win. However, the voting ballot was had over 90 names listed for Poilievre's "riding" - those seeking to get elected to Parliament. Carney's name was listed near the top of the list and easily found. Poilievre's name was buried into the middle of the list and was difficult to find. Older voters couldn't find Poilievre's name. The ballot was very confusing. It turns out that someone on Canada's voting commission found a loophole that allowed moving Poilievre's name into the middle of the list in an effort to hide it. Poilievre was reported to have record numbers of voters attending all of his pre-election rallies. The general consensus among western Canadians - it was a stolen election.

#42, that would only affect Pierre Poilievre's home riding where he ran for his own seat.
Neither his name nor Carney's were on the ballot in any other riding. Canadians vote for the Member of Parliament (MP) running on behalf of their party in a given riding (kind of like a congressional district). Whichever party gets the most MPs elected gets to form the government and the leader of that party becomes Prime Minister. In effect, a vote for the local member of the Conservative Party is a vote to elect the leader of the conservatives Prime Minister, but Poilievre's name isn't on the ballot as such.
