How Trump’s tariffs will boost my small business

In 2003, I witnessed the end of an era as a junior employee of Levi’s when the company closed its last factories in America. We had held out as long as we could. The market had shifted rapidly since NAFTA went into effect in January 1994, and even more so when China locked in most-favored-nation status in 2001. Consumer prices were dropping because of cheap labor — forced labor, in the case of China — and our jeans were expensive by comparison. Consumers said they valued the quality of our US-made products. But they weren’t willing to pay more for it. We were losing market share rapidly.

I cannot fathom people buying 68 new clothing items owr year and wearing them less than three times. I'm wearing a golf shirt that I got at my engineering group at work to celebrate getting a couple of new huge supercomputers. It's at least 15 years old and in fine condition. When I was deciding which shirt one of the other choices was a golf shirt which I hot when our shooting club ran the Indoor National Shhoring Championship for a particular kind of pistol shooting. It was dated 1988, has been worn dozens of times and still looks great. What sort of bizarre people wear clothes twice and toss??

That's nice for you. But tariffs will ruin my small business. We make a product for food enhancement here and sell it for export; our largest market is...Canada. Our biggest customer there and probably others will not buy from us any longer if Trump follows through on his trade war with our neighbor. We will lay well paid Americans off and probably close.

Don't leap before you need to, #2. You assume the worst, and it is not likely to happen the way you say.

The way I see President Trump's tariffs, is they are mainly meant to level the playing field*. When countries have forced or slave labor producing products, such as clothes, American manufacturers cannot compete. Not only do tariffs raise prices and make domestic products more competitive; they encourage foreign investment in the US. I see numerous foreign based companies beginning to invest in the US. That means more jobs and more dollars fueling economic growth. It's called creative destruction. I should know, my jobs got "creatively destroyed" way too often. I was able to bounce back until my last layoff, when ageism raised its ugly and illegal head. * Sometimes the tariffs are designed to punish countries who commit flagrant human rights abuses. I happen to be wearing a shirt from about 35 years ago, and it's still going strong. My hobby is not fashion, it's aviation, and that's almost as expensive as horses.

“Real Time” host Bill Maher argued in favor of pulling federal funding from NPR, insisting it has to go private in the age of hyper-partisan politics. During his online “Overtime” segment, Maher read a viewer question asking the panel to react to the testimony of NPR CEO Katherine Maher (no relation) and PBS CEO Paula Kerger, who defended their outlets to the House of Representatives’ newly-formed Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) subcommittee as GOP lawmakers call to strip them of taxpayer money over their left-wing bias.

It seems that Ukrainian Leader Volodymyr Zelensky has decided on a path that’ll send him clashing with US President Donald J. Trump and his administration. Besides repeatedly breaching the Trump-brokered partial ceasefire on energy and infrastructure, Zelensky has now made a TV statement that contains at least two very controversial points. First, he again stated that the hundreds of billions of dollars in US aid to the Kiev regime were NOT ‘loans’, but rather, donations – despite the fact that nothing was ever registered as such. Secondly, he alerted that Ukraine will NOT sign the reworked rare-earth/mineral exploration deal,

Federal data shows that Immigration and Customs Enforcement has nearly 50,000 detainees as President Trump’s policy of mass deportation of criminal illegals continues. It is ten thousand more than Joe Biden’s high of nearly 40,000 detentions. Federal data shows that detentions had reached to 47,892 detainees as of March 23. The number exceeds the 39,703 reached during the Biden years. It isn’t yet as high as the 60,000 reached during the first Trump term, but it seems clear that record will be broken. These are the highest numbers in five years, and it is likely they will soar even higher after proposed additional funding comes through,

The price of eggs has taken a sharp plunge as Americans have watched the cost of the grocery staple shift downward since mid-February, Axios reported Friday. The drop in prices comes as the nation has been grappling with a bird flu outbreak that has affected egg prices and farmers, per Breitbart News. According to the Axios report, “The average wholesale price of a dozen eggs was $3 Friday, down 8% from $3.27 on March 21, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data released Friday.” “It’s down 63% from a record $8.15 in the Feb. 21 report,” the article reads. “Inventories are recovering amid a sudden and largely unexplained slowdown

Nearly 5,000 voter registrations in the city of Milwaukee have been legally challenged for irregularities, potential fraud, and blatant violations of state and federal law. The comprehensive legal filing, submitted by concerned citizens Justin Gavery and Joe Nolan, exposes what many conservatives have warned about for years: a broken election system ripe for abuse. The challenge, backed by the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and a long list of Wisconsin statutes, calls on the Milwaukee Election Commission (MEC) to investigate and take immediate action on 4,878 questionable voter records.

Starting April 1, residents will have to separate food waste from trash or risk receiving a $25 fine from the Department of Sanitation. While mandatory composting became effecting in October 2024, the law passed by City Council established a warning period until April 2025. What are the food separation rules? Sanitation officials say they have deliberately kept the rules simple for residents. All food, yard and food-soiled paper waste must be set out in a bin on recycling day. What should be separated? In theory this puts an end to collective bargaining for more than half of all federal workers. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday evening abolishing union rights at more than two dozen federal agencies and offices, in a major expansion of the administration’s efforts to shrink the federal government. The White House cited national security concerns for terminating workers’ ability to bargain collectively, but the order applies at agencies with both direct and indirect links to national security.
