The Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk and a team of tech savvy young people, is cleaning up the Social Security rolls and clearing out ineligible recipients. More specifically, those who are deceased. (X) President Donald Trump held a Cabinet meeting at the White House Monday and ridding the federal government of waste, fraud and abuse was a central focus. Musk attended and Attorney General Pam Bondi thanked him for finding fraud the Department of Justice plans to pursue for prosecution.

But what about the actual people who are veterans of the Spanish American War who might not get their social security checks?
/s off
More cleanup is clearly needed. DOGE doing a job that has been needed for many decades.
And will their voter registrations be cancelled, too?

Re #2, I'm waiting to see any reliable sources saying how many of these SS people were actually being sent money. Some sources have said that there were no payments going out to most of these, but I have not heard any source that I trust say that this was the case.
If there was fraud, it should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, of course. It seems like a lot of these were not actually getting money sent, but we need that clarified.

I don't understand how the SS didn't know people had died because I have heard of family members having to return checks that came just a couple of days after the death.

Now, why would they carry all these ineligible recipients? Look at how many rolls have been checked by DOGE with the same result - many ineligible recipients. That argues for inefficiency, as well as calling for concern about those who running the place not doing their job. What stands out in all of this is there must be a strong element of DEI and political appointments rather than merit. I wonder how much these audits cost. Not because I am concerned about its legitimacy, just wondering why it has not been done for decades.

It hasn't been done for decades because fraud is a revenue stream.

I don't know if the deceased were getting checks, but is the total funding for SS counting those people. If so, where is it going?

My suspicion is that there are a small number of these deceased SSN receiving checks. It might be in the tens or hundreds, but being bureaucracy, it's a safe bet that there are some fail-safe protections that were ignored, neglected, or taken advantage of for personal profit.
Oh, while we're talking about it, my great-great-great-great-grandmother told me that she'd like me to cash her social security check this month. I hope she gets it. (Sarcasm key now off.)

Well, I'm kind of torn about this. Both my husband and I receive Social Security so I"m glad that this makes it more financially secure. But, it's kind of cold hearted to stop benefits from veterans of the Civil War. s/

One of the Democrats talking points against DOGE is " there is an Inspector General in that department to root out fraud and abuse". Then, they cry about how Trump fired the Inspector Generals. If the IGs had done their jobs at SS, there would be no 120+ year old on the rolls. Same with every other IG who somehow couldn't find (in years on the job) what DOGE found in weeks.

I am sure that there are hundreds maybe thousands or more getting checks that they aren't entitled to. They just let the checks keep coming after mom or grandma are long gone. When my mother passed away, the funeral director, who was a personal friend, said when that first check came in, write "deceased" on it and return it to the SS Administration. It was not only the legal and moral thing to do. Of course, many don't know the meaning of either word.

I understand that SSA is using the COBOL computer language which I believe was out of date 50 years ago. Whoever has been running their IT departments should be fired. What Musk & Co. are discovering has been incompetence as well as corruption, waste and fraud.

Poster #11...If someone dies, not only should SS be notified but the State must be notified to remove that person from the voters roll.

I had read that these are not people who actually still get a check. Most of them are just not marked "deceased" though they are no longer getting a check. Either way, good on DOGE for cleaning stuff up.
