Progressives struggle to stem bleeding

Progressives are struggling with recruitment, morale and fundraising as they seek a path forward heading into next year’s midterm elections. While some on the left, such as Justice Democrats, have called for primary challenges to moderate Democrats in 2026, many progressives acknowledge the hurdles and lack of attention they face. Despite a couple of names floated, like former Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) who is believed to be considering another House bid, liberals are more disorganized about their potential challenger roster. They’re also contending with waning donor enthusiasm. All together, these predicaments paint a picture of a left wing in trouble

Progressives, socialism, communism, whatever they want to call it is an evil, pernicious philosophy that, like a societal cancer, destroys everything it touches. Whenever and wherever it has been tried it yields misery, poverty, corruption and death. It is contrary to human nature and cannot too soon be tossed on the ash pile of history.

A federal judge on Friday cleared the way for the Trump administration to pull thousands of U.S. Agency for International Development staffers off the job. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols removed his temporary block on the effort to remove all but a small fraction of USAID staffers from their posts and give those abroad a 30-day deadline to move back to the U.S. at government expense. His ruling comes in a lawsuit filed by unions on behalf of workers. They say the rush to dismantle the agency had cut off some staffers overseas from emergency communications systems, including some in

ROME — Pope Francis is seriously worried about his health after being hospitalized with severe bronchitis, and is rushing to tie up loose ends ahead of the battle to succeed him. The pope was admitted to a special ward earlier this month in Gemelli Hospital in Rome with a respiratory infection, and he has since been forced to cancel a number of public appearances. (Snip) As his health has deteriorated over the last month, Francis has also moved to complete key initiatives and appoint sympathetic figures to key posts, following a progressive-tinted papacy marked by bitter ideological divisions. Pope Francis has a “polymicrobial infection” of his respiratory tract that will require his hospital treatment to be changed, the Vatican said Monday, with tests indicating a “complex clinical picture” for one of the oldest popes in the church’s history. The test results implied a further change in treatment requiring “adequate hospitalization” for the 88-year-old pontiff – who has long been plagued by a string of lung-related medical struggles. TUCSON, Ariz — The margin in the House of Representatives currently sits at 218-215. That's a slim majority for the Republican party. But Elise Stefanik's (R-NY) nomination for ambassador to the United Nations could lower that majority even more. On the Democrat side, Raul Grijalva (AZ-07) has not voted since Jan. 3. Grijalva announced he was diagnosed with cancer in early 2024, missing all 351 votes from April through September while getting treatment. He won re-election over Republican challenger Daniel Butierez in November, and announced his return to Capitol Hill later that month. But he has since only voted a handful

ST. PAUL, Minn. — U.S. Sen. Tina Smith of Minnesota said Thursday that she won’t seek reelection, setting off a scramble by potential candidates in both major political parties to fill her open seat. Several Democrats said they would run or quickly signaled their interest, including Gov. Tim Walz, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Rep. Ilhan Omar and Secretary of State Steve Simon. Democrats already faced an uphill battle in trying to regain control of the Senate, where Republicans have a 53-47 majority that has enabled them to confirm President Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees. A group is planning a nationwide economic blackout as a response to the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives sparked by the federal government. Why It Matters When President Donald Trump reentered office last month, one of his first calls to action was to end several of the DEI initiatives in the federal government. He mandated in an executive order that funds could be frozen for companies that do not comply. He also outlawed any messaging that promotes inclusion-based language. The orders have caused PBS to close its DEI office, while major companies like Amazon, Target and Google
