Trump and Ukraine: What Is Going On?

Over the last year, I have been surprised to learn that in some quarters I am considered a “Never Trumper.” That is ridiculous: I have voted for Trump three times, and through the fall of 2024 I had a Trump sign in my front yard. I have commented on Trump’s actions many times, probably in the hundreds, and I would guess my assessments have been 85% positive. And I am wildly enthusiastic about the early days of Trump’s current administration, as Power Line readers know.
But: Trump’s recent actions with regard to Ukraine are hard to explain. They have caused great consternation in Europe (not, I know, the acid test).

From the article: "But: Trump’s recent actions with regard to Ukraine are hard to explain."
No, recent actions are not hard to explain and as someone posted after the article, read "The Art of the Deal."

I totally support Trump's actions in Ukraine and the EU. Both are robbing us blind.

They always toss in something like this:
“That clause means ‘pay us first, and then feed your children’,” said one source close to the negotiations.
John may be a "loyal Trump supporter", but only when he agrees with him. John shows here why he is a laptop commando and nothing more. Negotiation is a foreign language he'll never understand. And he appears to get his news from the New York Times.

All this whining about Zelemskyy's having been left out of the peace negotiations... He didn't/wouldn't negotiate early on when he should have. In recent days it was reported that he deliberately absented himself from the UAE and went to Erdogan in Turkey brevause he didn't want to be involved in ghe negotiations with Russia. He is a drama queen who has no business running a 7-11 let alone a country. At some point he'll be nailed for the vast amount of our support billions that enriched him. Trump is pushing fof an election for a pjurpose. He knows Zelenskyy is not the Ukrainian people's choice and that he has promoted the war for his own reasons. He is an obstacle to peace.

Zelenskyy exhibits the erratic behavior of a serious addict. The EU dangles his puppet strings while he bounces around the world stage like a pinball. His future isn’t looking so good.

FTA:
"But on what planet does it make sense for President Trump to allow himself to be seen as an agent of Vladimir Putin in dealing with our ally, Ukraine? This strikes me as an unforced error of the sort to which Trump has too often been prone."
Yes, exactly. This 'blame the victim' crap is disgusting. Putin invaded Ukraine. And blaming Ukraine for defending themselves, and stopping one of the great evils on this planet today is sadly mistaken.
I support Trump in all things, up to this sad and incomprehensible "blame the victim, and support the invader" view that Trump seems to have taken.

This only makes sense if Trump has decided Zelenskyy is not someone that can be trusted. Frankly, I am just a simpleton in the land of international politics, but for a war going on three years it seems the only movement has been in terms of billions of dollars from outside Russia and Ukraine going into Russia and Ukraine. Europe is paying Russia billions more for oil and gas because America scaled back production in 2020 which is financiing their side of the war. Meanwhile Ukraine is getting billions of dollars from the US and a few other countries to finance their side of the war. Certainly Putin, Zelenskyy and their people are taking much of that off the top. Bottom line is neither leader is suffering, but both should be considering the suffering of their citizens, in this case mostly Ukranian citizens. So why isn't Zelenskyy a lot more interested in ending this than he sure seems to be? Now add to that the fact the Biden Administration is directly responsible for inflating the price Russia can get for oil and gas, and on the flip side sent cash to Ukraine. It feels like we the taxpayer was getting played to support Ukraine unquestionably. Follow the money.

I suspect that Trump knows that Zelensky has stolen not millions, but billions of US taxpayer dollars. Zelensky is a small time hood, who the Biden administration elevated to a global statesman because of all the corrupt money Biden and his son got from Ukraine. Trump knows this and he ain't havin' none of it. That's what's going on Mr. Hinderaker.

"Hopefully this will come out alright in the end. "
Oh ye of little faith.
Trump is a realist. Putin is not going to stop without getting something, whether that is fair or not. This is real life. The alternative is continuing war and the US being dragged along indefinitely to support it, with NO perceivable benefit to the US. Trump has stated THAT is NOT going to happen. As far as Trump is concerned, the war IS going to end OR Ukraine will have to fight on its own. The US (us first, remember) is NOT going to be held captive to this mess.
And no, Zelensky is not going to find a prize in his Cracker Jack box. He was robbed. Biden should have helped him negotiate out of going to war in the first place. Biden was dirty. Zelensky is dirty. They got a dirty result. Trump is not letting past mistakes bind the US to continual struggles. It's time for this to end. NOW!
And don't think Putin is "winning". Russia has been economically damaged by the war and Putin's reputation has taken a hit. He will get a couple of participation prizes and will go home to clean up his mess, which is going to take a lot of time. Plus, if Europe is smart, which is a big IF, they are going to move away from energy dependence on Russia, which is going to hurt and limit Putin.
The US meanwhile will be pulled out of another morass of a war and move on to bigger and better things, WE are the winner, which to Trump is the point.
Trump's solution might not be bright and shiny but it is one that can work.

Here's another perspective I found interesting, seemingly supported by some pretty good 'facts', if you can tolerate Mr. Sachs' 'all-knowing' attitude:

I think Trump understands Putin's actions. The previous administration supported Ukraine becoming a member of NATO. Ukraine is in Russia's backyard. Reminds me of our reaction when the Soviets tried to put missiles in our backyard during the Kennedy administration.

When those Ukrainian Asshats (Thieving Bastids) cannot find 60+BN dollars, they do not deserve to negotiate anything.
