People around here are used to the trucks that deliver paperwork to the old Pennsylvania limestone mine. Here, over 700 locals work as employees of the Office of Personnel Management processing the retirement papers of federal government workers. Everyone around here knows of its existence. In fact, a lot of people around here either work there or have a family member who works there.Once upon a time, the mines and quarries around Boyers were filled with limestone and coal, which powered and built the country, like hundreds of places across Pennsylvania. Work in those mines provided families with a decent wage and a reason to stay rooted in the region.

Not sure what the whole article says (paywall), but these mines are excellent locations for preservation of documents and such. I believe the Postal Service uses a mine in the Kansas City area for postage stamp storage and distribution

In 1953 a fire at the Veteran's Record storage facility in St. Louis destroyed 16-19 million records for veterans including Army 1912-1960. There was no catalogue kept, no duplicates, and other branches of military also lost records. I tried to obtain to family history and was told by VA that records were gone. My grandfather (WWI) and father (WWII) now have no official record of their service. Paper, if properly cared for, lasts forever. We have paper that's many hundreds of years old. Papyrus is thousands of yeas old. I can't even see the videotapes I have from 20 years ago because technology changes. Floppy discs, anyone? I continue to demand paper records for all our finances and keep them in a secure fire-proof box with a key (not electronic lock). In the event of an EMP or other attack that renders digital records "gone" I'll still have proof that I had specified assets on exact dates. In the unlikely event that there's anything left of civilization, and I can get to my assets, I'll have a way to do it. And there cash and precious metals elsewhere. VA building that burned was purpose-designed at a cost today that would be more than $140 million(!), with no fire walls, no indoor sprinklers, etc. etc.. 1953 was before WOKE but long after stupidity came to town.

The KC area is covered with old limestone mines. Many have been converted to storage areas, constant temp year round, and low humidity in most. There are some about a mile from my home, and I always figured it there was a nuke strike....driving down there, cutting the chain over the access road would be my first move. They go literally for miles. Some have been the site of winter 10K races in the past.

President Donald Trump's border czar Tom Homan on Friday clashed with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., over a webinar she hosted advising migrants about how to handle an encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "Let’s pray that she is not ‘educating’ the next murderer of a young college nursing student on how to evade arrest by ICE," Homan told Fox News Digital on Friday. "How many more young women have to be raped, murdered and burned alive until she wakes up?"

Vice President J.D. Vance held talks with Alice Weidel, the co-leader of Alternative for Germany (AfD), at the Munich Security Conference after crictizing organizers for not inviting members of her party. Vance made his debut on the international stage by issuing a blistering attack on Europe for 'criminalizing' free speech and ignoring its own 'core democratic values'. He then became the most senior U.S. official to meet with immigration hardliner Weidel, with the Afd heading for their strongest election showing in years when voters heads to the polls in nine days.

Russia is preparing to attack Nato states next year and Donald Trump does not have a plan to end the war in Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky warned yesterday. Here are some of the untruths told about Elon Musk and DOGE: "Musk has no right to cut USAID." Elon Musk and his team are not cutting any federal programs. They are auditors. They were given legal authority under a presidential executive order creating the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Its mandate is to identify waste, abuse, fraud, and irrelevance in the federal budget at a time when the U.S. is $37 trillion in debt. The agency will expire on July 4, 2026. Ultimately, Musk can propose program cuts, but Trump holds the authority to approve or reject them. He may or may not act on all, some, or none of the DOGE recommendations.

There are two wars that President Trump understandably wants to end. The conflict in the Middle East is actually the easier of the two to solve. And who thought anyone would ever be able to say that? In order for that war to end, Trump simply has to put pressure on the main backers of Hamas — Qatar and Iran — and make sure Hamas is isolated and alone. But the war in Ukraine is a much harder one to solve.

America, unfortunately, has long been suffering from a crisis of civics. Put simply, many Americans are woefully ignorant about the structure and features of their government. But every so often, an opportunity emerges to reteach some basics. The media's predictable shrieks and howls of "constitutional crisis" notwithstanding, we are in the throes of a grand separation-of-powers standoff that will both serve as one such edifying civics lesson. First: Enter the energetic executive. In his frenetic opening weeks, President Donald Trump has channeled the spirit of The Federalist No. 70, in which Alexander Hamilton argued that only a unitary executive can govern with "decision, activity, secrecy, and despatch."

Since his first day in office, President Donald Trump has swiftly delivered on many campaign promises. He has issued executive orders to end the foreign invasion at our southern border, eliminate racist DEI rules, and appointed Elon Musk to help root out waste and abuse in our federal government. These are strong conservative reforms worth celebrating. However, Washington, D.C., isn’t the only swamp that needs draining. There are 50 swamps in the 50 state capitols, and they are spiraling out of control. Recent events have made this clear, and their actions should alarm all of us.

Former President Joe Biden left a terrible legacy: the border catastrophe, chaos and disorder abroad, increased crime, oppressive wokeness. But for today’s purposes, consider the damage done by Biden’s economic policies. Inflation took away 20% of people’s purchasing power in a short period of time. Even when the rate of inflation slowed, it is still, right now, rising faster than economists — or anybody else — are comfortable with. This week there will be new numbers for inflation in January, and the message again will be that Biden brought inflation on but was unable to fully get rid of it. Now that is President Donald Trump’s job.

Schakowsky made her remarks on Wednesday during a Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade subcommittee hearing entitled “AI in Manufacturing: Securing American Leadership in Manufacturing and the Next Generation of Technologies.” Schakowsky suggested that perhaps the reason fewer women choose a career in manufacturing is that the term has the word “man” in it. Schakowsky stated, “Yesterday, I met with a manufacturing company, but they also are engaged in getting young people more engaged in manufacturing. I asked them, ‘How many of those students that are signing up and want to do this, how many are women?'”
