The Potomac Crash Was Entirely Avoidable

Danasia Elder was fantastic at her job. Before she died in the horrible plane crash over the Potomac, I flew with her just a couple of weeks ago. She seemed to be filled with joy. She visibly cared about doing a great job. Danasia wasn’t phoning it in. When you are on planes a lot, you notice the best flight attendants, and Danasia was one of the best. I also recently flew with the pilot, Jonathan Campos, and Ian Epstein, the other flight attendant. I remember Ian because he was bit of a character. My short personal interactions with these souls, refreshingly dedicated folks who seemed to care about their work,

I was curious about the helicopter flying so close to an airport. I wonder if the path was one of the protection issues that came about after 9/11.

One report says that two airliners inbound to Reagan National had to abort landings because of conflicts with Army helos. Sounds like the helos are regularly getting out of where they are supposed to be and getting into the path of landing airliners.

The public doesn’t know yet what caused it. Lots of experts, maybe some expert opinion, and the usual amount of armchair speculation. There’s a reason Trump raised the subject of DEI hires in air traffic control. There’s also a reason the helicopter pilot is being looked at. I think we will soon know.

Re #6, ATC had talked several times to the helo pilot asking if they had the traffic in sight, and was assured several times that they saw the CRJ and would provide 'visual separation'. And even if they had not seen it, if the helo was in the proper corridor, which it was until seconds before impact, it would have safely passed under the airliner, as intended. For some reason the pilot of the helo suddenly climbed. This seems like a spatial disorientation/vertigo response. Sudden head movement like looking sideways quickly, in a very low visibility situation like this can cause inner ear inputs which your brain interprets incorrectly. If the pilot moved his/her head suddenly, perhaps scanning for traffic with the narrow field of view with night vision goggles, he/she may have had an overpowering sensation of diving towards the river and pulled back on the stick instinctively.....ballooning into the airliner's path. Vertigo is a very real and dangerous phenomenon in low visibility flying. Instrument pilots are trained to ignore these sensations and follow their instruments. VFR pilots only fly by visual flight rules and are far less schooled or experienced with trusting instruments, more likely to react badly. These false impressions are totally convincing, difficult to ignore in the instant.

As a former pilot, albeit briefly, it looks like the Blackhawk got to the wrong altitude quickly. Maybe too quickly for ATC to warn it to descend. That airport has way too much traffic. Build another one 20 miles away, or cut back the flights in and out. No conspiracy, just a tragic accident.

Re #13, they already went out and found the space to build a proper, big airport to serve DC. It is called Dulles Airport and was built 63 years ago to 'replace' National Airport, not yet called Reagan National. In the 1960s they had to go out pretty far to find the space, today, they'd have to go a whole lot farther farther. This "need another airport to relieve congestion at National" was "solved" 60+ years ago, and Dulles has a lot of traffic, but the subway line did not reach all the way out there until a couple of years ago, and this used to make it less convenient. Now you can take the train (Silver line) all the way into DC. Personally, I most often used to fly into Dulles and have family who lived in central Va, pick me up. A couple of times, I flew into Reagan and my father flew his light plane into Reagan and picked me up. But, the Congresscritters want to hop in a "free" Army VIP helo and fly 5-6 minutes to Reagan and get on a plane, and vice versa. They aren't going to ride the subway with the Little People....and frankly, in DC, I am scared of riding the subway, too.

President Donald Trump’s deputies have frozen an expanding federal bureaucracy used by elite-run groups to import migrant workers via a private door in the nation’s borders. The shutdown comes just before the private migration groups were to be aided by a $5 billion migration fund created by Congress in 2024 for additional migration inflows in 2025. Trump’s deputies froze the bureaucracy by delaying the approval of paperwork needed by migrants to get into the United States. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency announced it is “pausing acceptance of Form I-134A, Online Request to be a Supporter and Declaration of Financial Support until we review all categorical parole processes as required,”

The fires that swept through the Los Angeles area pose a massive challenge for city officials and residents, not just from the sheer scale of the initial damage, but from the unique challenges presented by the cleanup. Among the most difficult challenges will be handling the damaged lithium ion batteries found in electric vehicles left on properties during the evacuation. EV Magazine noted that California leads the United States with respect to electric vehicle adoption, with just around 40% of electric cars in the country on its roads, especially because of green policies pushed by the state government. As of this writing, no final decision has been made. The Trump administration is considering scaling down the U.S. Agency for International Development and putting it under control of the State Department, two sources familiar with the discussions said on Friday, in a significant overhaul of how Washington allocates U.S. foreign aid worldwide. The National Security Council (NSC) hosted discussions this week on the topic, a person familiar with the matter said.

This was done under a Biden administration policy that is a frank abuse of the immigration parole system. In another reversal of Biden administration policies, the Trump administration is making plans to revoke the legal status of immigrants who entered the United States under this program. The proposal by the Department of Homeland Security, spelled out in an unpublished notice, would fully terminate a Biden administration program that allowed more than 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans

President Trump’s first week in office was nothing short of extraordinary in its broad yet targeted attacks on the federal status quo and the deep state. Last Friday, following a whirlwind tour of North Carolina and California disaster sites, Trump said out loud what many emergency management experts have been thinking for some time: The Federal Emergency Management Agency is failing, and its core mission needs to be scrutinized and revised. The president’s comments were followed by the announcement of a high-level commission charged with analyzing FEMA’s recent performance and suggesting fundamental changes to how the agency functions. This is all positive news, because the current FEMA model does not work

The most poignant moment of Kash Patel’s hearing on Thursday, as Trump’s FBI Director nominee, was his response to Senator Welch (D-VT). Having waded through the thoroughly boring Democrat tropes referencing January 6th, and the laboriously repeated question absolutely no one cares about—does Patel believe Trump actually lost the 2020 election?—he deftly exploited a subtle opening in Welch’s line of questioning. He responded with a statement pregnant with common sense, “That’s why I think its time, for the first time in this country’s history, that a public defender be the next director of the FBI, because no one knows more about constitutional due process than PDs.”
