Danasia Elder was fantastic at her job. Before she died in the horrible plane crash over the Potomac, I flew with her just a couple of weeks ago. She seemed to be filled with joy. She visibly cared about doing a great job. Danasia wasn’t phoning it in. When you are on planes a lot, you notice the best flight attendants, and Danasia was one of the best.
I also recently flew with the pilot, Jonathan Campos, and Ian Epstein, the other flight attendant. I remember Ian because he was bit of a character.
My short personal interactions with these souls, refreshingly dedicated folks who seemed to care about their work,

I was curious about the helicopter flying so close to an airport. I wonder if the path was one of the protection issues that came about after 9/11.

Over the years the other solution was to close DCA.

And members of Congress keep pushing to add more and more flights - convenience you know.

CHECK THE HELO PILOTS BACKGROUND.

One report says that two airliners inbound to Reagan National had to abort landings because of conflicts with Army helos. Sounds like the helos are regularly getting out of where they are supposed to be and getting into the path of landing airliners.

It looks like the chopper flew right into the airplane. Too many machines in the air for the tower to handle?

I saw just a few seconds of the accident. To my untrained eye it looks like the helicopter flew into the plane on purpose.

When you watch the collision and see the path of the chopper, it looks intentional.

The public doesn’t know yet what caused it. Lots of experts, maybe some expert opinion, and the usual amount of armchair speculation. There’s a reason Trump raised the subject of DEI hires in air traffic control. There’s also a reason the helicopter pilot is being looked at. I think we will soon know.

Let's see what plays out. At least under a Trump administration, we can expect to hear the real story.

Re #6, ATC had talked several times to the helo pilot asking if they had the traffic in sight, and was assured several times that they saw the CRJ and would provide 'visual separation'. And even if they had not seen it, if the helo was in the proper corridor, which it was until seconds before impact, it would have safely passed under the airliner, as intended.
For some reason the pilot of the helo suddenly climbed. This seems like a spatial disorientation/vertigo response. Sudden head movement like looking sideways quickly, in a very low visibility situation like this can cause inner ear inputs which your brain interprets incorrectly. If the pilot moved his/her head suddenly, perhaps scanning for traffic with the narrow field of view with night vision goggles, he/she may have had an overpowering sensation of diving towards the river and pulled back on the stick instinctively.....ballooning into the airliner's path.
Vertigo is a very real and dangerous phenomenon in low visibility flying. Instrument pilots are trained to ignore these sensations and follow their instruments. VFR pilots only fly by visual flight rules and are far less schooled or experienced with trusting instruments, more likely to react badly. These false impressions are totally convincing, difficult to ignore in the instant.

Have they identified the third person in the helo yet?

As a former pilot, albeit briefly, it looks like the Blackhawk got to the wrong altitude quickly. Maybe too quickly for ATC to warn it to descend. That airport has way too much traffic. Build another one 20 miles away, or cut back the flights in and out. No conspiracy, just a tragic accident.

Re #13, they already went out and found the space to build a proper, big airport to serve DC. It is called Dulles Airport and was built 63 years ago to 'replace' National Airport, not yet called Reagan National. In the 1960s they had to go out pretty far to find the space, today, they'd have to go a whole lot farther farther.
This "need another airport to relieve congestion at National" was "solved" 60+ years ago, and Dulles has a lot of traffic, but the subway line did not reach all the way out there until a couple of years ago, and this used to make it less convenient. Now you can take the train (Silver line) all the way into DC.
Personally, I most often used to fly into Dulles and have family who lived in central Va, pick me up. A couple of times, I flew into Reagan and my father flew his light plane into Reagan and picked me up.
But, the Congresscritters want to hop in a "free" Army VIP helo and fly 5-6 minutes to Reagan and get on a plane, and vice versa. They aren't going to ride the subway with the Little People....and frankly, in DC, I am scared of riding the subway, too.

Oh, and Dulles Airport takes up over 20 square miles. Finding that much empty space anywhere near DC is literally impossible today.
