Fires Break Out in Helene-Ravaged Western

As of Wednesday evening, at least three fires have broken out in Western North Carolina in areas that were decimated by Hurricane Helene, according to Fox Weather. The fires are largely located in McDowell County, which is just northeast of Asheville. [Tweet, video] So far, there have been no injuries, though numerous outbuildings have been destroyed. Many of the homes in the area were already destroyed in late September when Helene hit the region. Even so, evacuation orders were in place, and a shelter has been opened at a local Baptist church. The deadly air collision that killed 67 people in Washington, DC Wednesday night came amid an air traffic control staffing crisis and alarmingly high rates of near-misses on airport runaways.
One air traffic controller had been doing the job of two people when an American Airlines plane smashed into an Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, according to Federal Aviation Administration documents obtained by The New York Times.
It wasn’t a fluke: The FAA has had air traffic control staffing issues since pandemic-era mass layoffs in 2020 from which it has yet to recover.
Democratic California Rep. Norma Torres is doubling down on holding President Donald Trump responsible for contributing to the fatal aircraft collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Wednesday night despite the president being in office for just over a week.
Torres fired off two tweets late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning appearing to attribute the aviation disaster to executive actions Trump took related to a federal hiring freeze and firing several agency heads. There is no indication that the president’s actions contributed to the midair collision, a White House official told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Investigators are going to have to look at every possible reason a military Black Hawk Helicopter could crash into an American Airlines passenger jet landing at Reagan Airport in D.C.
The calls from air traffic controllers for the helicopter to “return to base” raise serious concerns over what may have caused this crash.

Some people living in South Florida are reporting that family members who showed up to regularly scheduled appointments with immigration officers were detained on Monday in Delray Beach.
