UPDATE: 2:38 p.m.: Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) and Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas) switched their votes to Johnson on the first vote, giving him the majority and the House Speaker's gavel. We'll have more details soon. Original article: Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) has failed to win the votes necessary to win the House Speakership in the first round of voting. The final tally of the first round: Mike Johnson: 216 votes. Hakeem Jeffries: 215 votes Others: 3 votes. A 218-vote majority was needed to win the speakership. Although Johnson successfully steered the government away from a shutdown before Christmas, his negotiations over the continuing resolution sparked criticism within the GOP.

Comments:

The voting just concluded and now the speeches begin.

Perhaps this is not everyone's ideal Speaker, but it is a heck of a lot better than endless infighting. Note how the Democrats never have any self-righteous defectors.

Glad that two of the showboats came to their senses so that the House can begin enacting Trump's agenda. There is a time and place for infighting but right at the beginning of Trump's victory is not that time or place. FTA: "Although Johnson successfully steered the government away from a shutdown before Christmas, his negotiations over the continuing resolution sparked criticism within the GOP." While I agree that a so-called government shutdown before Christmas needed to be avoided, a shutdown is exactly what needs to occur if the normal budgetary process is yet again not enacted. Perhaps the handful of anti-Johnson Republican members can redeem themselves by insisting on passing the several budget bills and are ready to "shutdown" the government if that process is corrupted and overall spending not reduced.

Thankfully that election is over and done without the self destruction from the “true” Conservatives. Politics is the art of the possible. Let me ask those who are complaining about Johnson’s election as speaker: who is your alternative that could have been elected? You would have let Hakim Jeffries get elected because Johnson wasn’t conservative enough for your taste. The Conservative Philosophers at National Review would rather that Hillary Clinton be president in 2016 because DJT was not a “true” Conservative. Now let DJT get on with the job!

With respect #2, Rep. Massie is a Libertarian. He is not a RINO-- that term gets loosely thrown around as some sort of dirty word for anyone who doesn't go along. The accurate description of a Republican In Name Only is actually better defined as one who votes with the demonrat socialist Marxists almost all the time. This is not the case with Massie. He is one of the few who will almost always oppose going into more debt, expanding government, refusing to raise the "debt ceiling (which means approving the practice of printing more money) like a heroin addict who needs just "one more fix" Virtually all of those 38 who opposed the slimmed down compromise demanding a better bad bill before the shutdown were NOT RINOs and President Trump railed about-- they are actually some of his biggest supporters! Except for Massie, they ALL voted for Speaker Johnson to continue. The biggest RINO types are actually the OLD low-T ones in the Senate and John Thune as the Majority Leader taking over for Benidict Turtle is more of a concern

Outgoing Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was mocked as a fool after his effort to burnish the legacy of his soon-to-be ex-boss, suggesting that President Joe Biden’s accomplishments should be viewed in a historic context. On New Year’s Eve, Buttigieg, who only got his important job because he’s openly gay, posted a video to his X account hailing Biden and fellow DEI hire Kamala Harris for their “Big Deal” for infrastructure and ludicrously claiming that their work will one day be viewed as a titanic achievement, much like the Hoover Dam. Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, a 28-year-old Dominican national living unlawfully in the United States, has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine, and heroin trafficking, a spokesperson for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to the Daily Caller News Foundation. Mark January 20, 2025, as the start of the biggest man-hunt in American history. That’s when the newly minted Trump administration 2.0 will begin hunting down and deporting millions of criminal aliens welcomed in by the Biden-Harris administration. If successful, they’ll purge our cities of murderers, child traffickers, and drug pushers, a result that will prove wildly popular with a country tired of mass illegal immigration. But that’s only step one. Restoring America’s honor and independence requires freeing her from millions more nonviolent illegal migrants who’ve lived for years within our borders in violation of the law. Finding them will prove tricky. Trump’s commitment to mass deportations may be ironclad,

Judge Juan Merchan indicated in a recent ruling that he will not sentence President-elect Donald Trump to any jail time related to his conviction for falsifying business records. The judge denied Trump’s prior motion to dismiss a jury verdict convicting him of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to alleged “hush money” payments the president-elect made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 campaign. The sentencing had been delayed numerous times at Trump’s request. Merchan rejected the defense’s claims about presidential immunity, arguing that immunity “from criminal process for a sitting president does not extend to a President-elect”

The ultra-violent criminal gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) is now in 19 states and continues to grow its numbers in the U.S., according to the New York Post. And the way to do that is to infiltrate the U.S. Southern border with as many members as possible. It hasn't had to try very hard in recent years. But as Biden sought to undo the damage his catastrophic border policies caused and the political trouble made for his vice president, Kamala Harris, he tried to tighten security at some of the major border crossings.

Honduran President Xiomara Castro has threatened to terminate military cooperation with the United States if President-elect Donald Trump proceeds with his plan for mass deportations of illegal immigrants, including those from Honduras. This ultimatum underscores the glaring hypocrisy of a leader who has failed to address the root causes driving her own citizens to flee her country in the first place. An underlying realization that the Democratic party’s politburo — Obama, Pelosi, Schumer, Jeffries, and their courtiers of elected official and consultant sycophants — sold voters a bill of goods: the gaslighting of the public on President Biden’s decrepitude; the false idol of the Kamala Harris “campaign of joy” as a smart last-minute stand-in; and the repeated cowering to the far left whose wokeness and moral condescension turns off most voters. President-elect Donald J. Trump will be sentenced on January 10, but there will be no jail time, not that was ever a concern. The laws and statutes got so contorted that even CNN’s Elie Honig, the network's chief legal analyst and former assistant US attorney, couldn’t defend it, aptly calling it a total disaster of a case. In essence, Trump only got convicted because Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his team perverted the rule of law.
