23andMe must secure its DNA databases immediately

23andMe, born from the techno-optimism of the Human Genome Project, revolutionized direct-to-consumer genetic testing. But with its valuation now in freefall, mounting layoffs and its board resigning en masse, 23andMe’s imminent failure raises a critical question: What will happen to the sensitive genetic data of its 15 million customers? This is not just 23andMe’s reckoning; it’s a warning for the customers of the entire direct-to-customer endeavor, which has long struggled to balance rapid innovation and profits with robust consumer protections. Your DNA — an immutable blueprint of your identity — could be sold, shared with unknown entities or exploited for targeted advertising and product development without your consent.

My son was getting into high tech stuff back when 23andme started up. He wanted to know our family medical tendencies and strengths. He asked me to send my sample and he paid the $500 fee for me to join. I had to send the sample from another state than NY where I lived, as NY wasn't authorizing it yet. It was quite helpful at the time, as we found many strengths in our DNA. I feel angry to think that this has become a liability now. I would not have cooperated if I had known these ramifications at year 2006.

#2 is exactly right. It stands to reason that you didn’t have to provide a company like 23&Me with saliva samples for a map of your DNA to be made available to undesirable entities.

Anyone who willingly gave up their DNA is an idiot. It makes me nervous to give blood once a year for my annual check up! All the government would need to do to get my clinic to give it up, is wave a dollar bill in front of them.

B'H. At first, I thought what great tool to find from whence the family came. However, upon reasonable and rational rethinking, I thought Oh, Heck No! Absotively, posilutely No! I will not even research my dog's genetic footprint. The overwhelming likelihood that participation in such an exercise would come back to get me (or even worse) is not worth whatever I may find. The L-rd G-d Almighty knows my ancestry and I will find out soon enough. I leave such to Him.

Iran appears determined to destabilize Jordan, and is thus trying to drag the kingdom into its regional maelstrom by manipulating Jordanian national and terrorist substate entities to do its bidding. The Islamist threat to the stability of the Kingdom has greatly increased with the fall of its neighbor Syria into the hands of the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, a Sunni Islamist group committed to radicalizing the Levant, which includes Jordan. The Israeli Air Force (IAF), in a recent airstrike, destroyed three cross-border smuggling routes from Syria to Lebanon, which were being used by Iran to bring ship weapons to still-functioning Hezbollah terrorist cells.

As I said at the time : “In summary, if, as I suspect, MHRA is worried by the results in Pfizer’s ‘Interim Report 5’ then no wonder it is sitting on it.” Well, MHRA is still sitting on the report but I’ve managed to obtain a copy. It’s that the entire energy of the nation, and maybe the world, has changed overnight. From the Daniel Penny exoneration, to the reopening of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris before all the leaders of the West — including Donald Trump, but notably excluding Joe Biden — to the triumphant flights of Starship and a sudden shift in relations with previously difficult neighbor countries like Mexico and Canada,

On Sept. 27, an Inland Empire resident drove away from her job at an area hospital when her pickup truck puttered to a stop. An investigation showed her tank had been drilled and emptied. A Valero Station in Fremont lost tens of thousands of gallons of diesel to thieves using a device to bypass pump security and transfer fuel into a specially configured pickup truck on July 10. On July 2, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office charged two men with an alleged fuel theft scheme involving $90,000.00 in diesel fuel thefts. On March 1, East Bay law enforcement reported a “rash of destructive gas thefts by drilling gas tanks.”

Despite the fact that the Muslim so-called Palestinians aggressively persecute Christians and want to wipe Israel off the map, woke Pope Francis has continually expended all of his empathy for Gaza while condemning Israel.
