A San Antonio, Texas, homeowner armed with a shotgun killed an alleged intruder who reportedly lunged at him just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday. CBS Austin reported that the alleged intruder came to the front door seeking entry to the home, and the homeowner told him to leave. The alleged intruder then reportedly sought entrance again, and was again told to leave. Thereafter, the homeowner “heard noises in the backyard and upon investigation, encountered the same man.” The homeowner then grabbed his shotgun and was standing with his wife when the intruder allegedly lunged at him. The homeowner fired one round, fatally wounding the alleged intruder.

Life is all about choices. Choosing to lunge at a guy with a shotgun....is about as bad a choice as you can make. Two shotgun gauges are the most common, 12 gauge and 20 gauge. Even with a load of birdshot, hundreds of tiny pellets, like 1/16th of an inch, for the non-shotgun folks, at close range it would be devastating for any torso hit. If buckshot were used, which is usually loaded for self protection, the charge is 9 to 28 lead balls in the quarter inch to 3/8 if an inch size range, depending on the particular load chosen. These are about as deadly as bird shot at 5 feet, but far more effective at 10 or 20 yards range. It sounds like this was one of those 'feet' sort of enegagements which the actual load used is probably not a big deal. Shotguns can be the most deadly weapons ordinarily available to citizens at short ranges from feet to perhaps 30 yards. And of course, there is a 'slug' load available for shotguns which is one massive bullet. In 12 gauge it is roughly 3/4" in diameter, for 20 gauge shotgun about 5/8" diameter. A 12 gauge slug is conclusive against a grizzly bear at short ranges, just imagine how it would work on a person. But even the most "wimpy" birdshot load, intended for quail, which wouldn't kill a person at 30 yards at all, is deadly at single digit feet distances.

Oh, and at short range, the shotgun is the king. 00 buckshot is nine 33 caliber balls @ about 1,200 fps. Efficacious to the maximum. The bad guy immediately stops what he was doing. He won't try again, either. Takes the fight right out of him.

Re #12, yes, exactly right but the good news for police officers are that any ordinary police bullet resistant vest will stop any and all shotgun ammunition. I have read comments from an officer shot with a 12 gauge slug, weighing 1 ounce, moving at 1600 or more feet per second on a soft police bullet resistant vest. While the vest will STOP the slug, or any buckshot, pretty easily, there is still a lot of energy, and the cop shot with the slug was 'out of the fight' for many seconds, even though ultimately OK with, IIRC, one broken rib. So, while anyone should be very respectful of the devastating power of a shotgun at close range, most police today are wearing vests which will stop shotgun rounds. Better hope to have backup as the officer may be in enough pain for a while to preclude effective action for critical seconds.

WASHINGTON – President Biden told a black radio station in an interview released Thursday that he understood their struggle for representation — because he didn’t think Catholics could be president before John F. Kennedy was elected more than six decades ago. Biden, 81, told Pennsylvania radio host Andrea Lawful-Sanders that he knew what his nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court meant to “a young girl who is in school and having trouble.” “I looked at John Kennedy and said, ‘Well, he — John — he got elected. Why can’t I get elected?'” the president said. “People need things to look up to.”

It was 248 years ago today that the world found out that the Continental Congress in Philadelphia was really up. Rather than trying to reconcile with England, they decided to break, completely. More than that, these 56 men from all 13 colonies decided to lay out for all the world, and history, to see why it was they chose this path. The idea had been decided earlier, the language labored over, and the printer finally got the finished product to make copies so the colonists could be told what their leaders ultimately decided. It was the debut of the Declaration of Independence. We revere this document today,

"Congress shall make no law," the First Amendment begins and, in an ideal world, the Founders would have put the period after "law," as you're sure to agree after reading the latest assault on one of our two most important constitutional guarantees. What we need right now is the late, great George Carlin to remind everyone that "Political correctness is America's newest form of intolerance, and it is especially pernicious because it comes disguised as tolerance." "It presents itself as fairness, yet attempts to restrict and control people's language with strict codes and rigid rules," Carlin continued. "I'm not sure that's the way to fight discrimination."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is continuing her quest to raise taxes. She is now trying to convince the moderate Democrats and those who are against tax hikes to pass the progressives' tax hikes. For years, we have heard Democrat politicians criticize corporations that employ millions of people for not paying higher taxes. That may sound like a great idea — if it were realistic. Corporations will never pay their "fair share" in taxes. If Congress ultimately decides to raise the corporate tax, that will be a tax on the consumers because those corporations will raise prices to cover their costs and offset what they would be paying in taxes.

I always remember the father of a friend of mine saying that we should always refer to it as Independence Day because every country has a July 4, but the phrase "Fourth of July" has long been part of our lexicon. But it could've been different. Initially, our Independence Day was going to be the Second of July. "There’s no doubt the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence in July 1776," writes Scott Bomboy of the National Constitution Center. "But which date has the legitimate claim on Independence Day: July 2 or July 4??"

The White House and the Biden campaign are colluding to contain the fallout from Biden's disastrous debate performance last week, and they decided a short address to the nation to react to the Supreme Court decision in Trump v.
