A San Antonio, Texas, homeowner armed with a shotgun killed an alleged intruder who reportedly lunged at him just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday.
CBS Austin reported that the alleged intruder came to the front door seeking entry to the home, and the homeowner told him to leave. The alleged intruder then reportedly sought entrance again, and was again told to leave. Thereafter, the homeowner “heard noises in the backyard and upon investigation, encountered the same man.”
The homeowner then grabbed his shotgun and was standing with his wife when the intruder allegedly lunged at him. The homeowner fired one round, fatally wounding the alleged intruder.

This often occurs when you lunge at someone holding a shotgun, as a matter of fact it is right there in the manual.... Intruding For Dummies 101

Life is all about choices. Choosing to lunge at a guy with a shotgun....is about as bad a choice as you can make.
Two shotgun gauges are the most common, 12 gauge and 20 gauge. Even with a load of birdshot, hundreds of tiny pellets, like 1/16th of an inch, for the non-shotgun folks, at close range it would be devastating for any torso hit. If buckshot were used, which is usually loaded for self protection, the charge is 9 to 28 lead balls in the quarter inch to 3/8 if an inch size range, depending on the particular load chosen. These are about as deadly as bird shot at 5 feet, but far more effective at 10 or 20 yards range. It sounds like this was one of those 'feet' sort of enegagements which the actual load used is
probably not a big deal. Shotguns can be the most deadly weapons ordinarily available to citizens at short ranges from feet to perhaps 30 yards. And of course, there is a 'slug' load available for shotguns which is one massive bullet. In 12 gauge it is roughly 3/4" in diameter, for 20 gauge shotgun about 5/8" diameter. A 12 gauge slug is conclusive against a grizzly bear at short ranges, just imagine how it would work on a person. But even the most "wimpy" birdshot load, intended for quail, which wouldn't kill a person at 30 yards at all, is deadly at single digit feet distances.

About 20 years ago there was a female Denver police officer who filled in occasionally on Denver KOA Radio talk shows. She said powerful handguns were certainly a concern, but officers were really afraid of shotguns. Her words —- “shotguns are devastating.”

there's no such thing as a "wound" from a shotgun at such close range and said intruder had "demise" written all over his (what color was he, again - I didn't see it in the posting) derriere at the point when the shotgun round removed a healthy secton of his body mass
anyway, depending on where the homeowner was aiming, said intruder had a lot less body mass after the shotgun blast hit him than when he woke up that morning
good shoohin' homeownver, good shootin'

Oh, and at short range, the shotgun is the king. 00 buckshot is nine 33 caliber balls @ about 1,200 fps. Efficacious to the maximum. The bad guy immediately stops what he was doing. He won't try again, either. Takes the fight right out of him.

Re #12, yes, exactly right but the good news for police officers are that any ordinary police bullet resistant vest will stop any and all shotgun ammunition.
I have read comments from an officer shot with a 12 gauge slug, weighing 1 ounce, moving at 1600 or more feet per second on a soft police bullet resistant vest. While the vest will STOP the slug, or any buckshot, pretty easily, there is still a lot of energy, and the cop shot with the slug was 'out of the fight' for many seconds, even though ultimately OK with, IIRC, one broken rib.
So, while anyone should be very respectful of the devastating power of a shotgun at close range, most police today are wearing vests which will stop shotgun rounds. Better hope to have backup as the officer may be in enough pain for a while to preclude effective action for critical seconds.
