In 1862, Dakota Indians went on a mass murder spree, butchering more than 600 innocent whites, mostly women and children. The Indians murdered babies, beating their brains out and nailing them to trees. They tortured children. They engaged in gang rape on a mass scale. That slaughter was the worst massacre by either whites or Indians from 1492 to the present. On a per capita basis, it was five times the carnage of September 11. If that narrative sounds familiar, it should. What the Dakota did in 1862 was remarkably similar to what Gazans did on October 7.

Something very similar happened in Albany NY in 1791 where Indians butchered women and children and decapitated many of the victims. There was a small article in the Jan. 23rd, 1792, edition of the National Gazette which was published in Philadelphia.

I was never taught this is school and I graduated HS in 1969. I haven't read much about Indian history but I don't remember ever, ever, reading anything about this mass murder by Dakota Indians. I do remember some accounts of the savagry of Indian on Indian warfare. I would bet that most Americans have not read or heard of this Indian on white slaughter, especially now as it goes against the political narrative of our times.

There is a great deal of American history not taught in our schools. That’s simply the way it is. There’s only so much that can be crammed into a typical school curriculum. Most of my learning came outside of school. The libraries and Internet are right there for us to dig in and do our research.

My ancestor was part of Sully's Cavalry Command that pursued the Dakota perpetrators into Dakota Territory in 1863 and defeated them at The Battle Of Whitestone Hill. The 5th Iowa Cavalry was shipped to the Western front in the Civil War following the Pursuit, and fought in the battles around Atlanta in 1864, and Nashville and Franklin in TN. Was present at Forrest's surrender in 1865.

I learned about it at a public community college here in Minnesota. The take on it was --- the White Man had broken so many treaties and were not bringing food to the Indians on the reservation as promised - so the Indians "understandably" took advantage of the White Man being away in the Civil War and launched a war. I'm not justifying the White Man's treatment of the Indians, but this savagery also cannot be justified, let alone honored. Supposedly the Dakota War ignited by a couple of young Indians who came across a chicken's nest along the fence of a white man's farm. There were eggs in the nest and they decided to take them. Later as tension built, some Indians seeing an opportunity, approached Chief Sitting Bull desiring that he should lead them in a war against the White Man. The way I heard it, Sitting Bull was reluctant, sensing certain defeat, but went anyway. New Ulm was especially hard hit in the war. The hangings took place in Mankato where they still have an annual memorial service. You can bet what the tone of that is. (I love the description of Gov. Walz as "dungheap of ignorance" -- Walz, before being a Congressman and Governor, was a teacher at a Mankato public high school. (This was after he cowardly resigned from the Nebraska National Guard rather than go to Iraq. Yes, someone had to go in his place.)

It is very unsettling how Liberals and Leftists, almost to a person, are attracted and enthralled with evil men and circumstance.
How much better would Eastern Europe have been, if FDR hadn’t had a crush on Stalin?

My great grandfather was a lad of about 16 when the Minnesota Militia came marching through his little town in 1862 calling for volunteers. Granddad joined in, fought in some big battles, and took a bullet that remained in his body for the rest of his days. As to broken treaties, sure Washington broke them, and so did the Sioux.

There is a huge difference between the Dakota Uprising and the Oct 7 Hamas massacre, namely that the Sioux were on their ancestral homelands. When the Sioux began their attacks, they were literally facing starvation and further displacement onto reservations. They had been pressured by the U.S. government to give up their hunting traditions and become farmers; however, an 1861 crop failure and harsh winter had led to starvation and other hardships for the Dakota. Not to excuse the Sioux's barbaric behavior but the Palestinians in Gaza occupy Israeli lands, so the circumstances are different and claiming similarity only serves to support the Palestinian claims to the land that Israel has allowed them to occupy. In the aftermath of the Sioux uprising, the largest mass execution, a one-day hanging event, in U. S. history occurred when 38 Dakota were hung. Another huge difference is that many Dakota Sioux helped protect and gain the release of 269 white and mixed blood hostages taken during the initial assault. Surviving Indians were exiled from Minnesota onto a reservation in South Dakota. The aftermath of Oct 7 has yet to be revealed but wholly different circumstances call for different outcomes.

Go to the links within the story and get both sides. The left side is PC junk.

Back when the Left was satisfied with just tearing down statues of revered American icons some wanted to remove anything honoring Abraham Lincoln for authorizing the execution of some Injuns. I believe this is it.

Liberals rarely are in the middle of action. If an event happens, it's only important if it affects them. Liberals in San Fran and New York are indignant when they get mugged by the thugs their policies put back on the street. If the Dakota had upset political plans, they would not cheer so loudly.

Walz was a public school teacher? Well, that explains why he doesn't know the difference being "hung" (like wall decor) or being hanged (like humans.) Anyone who wants to know more about the cultures of the Old West ought to read "Empire of the Summer Moon." Fascinating, and has photos!

Well....This story certainly shatters the myth that all of the Indians were living here peacefully and one with nature before White settlers came to America. Didn't they just go to their sacred rock or mountain and commune with the animals while the evil settlers slaughtered them for fun as depicted by liberal activists? American Indians were just as brutal and savage as any White invaders, Muslim crusaders, Asian marauders, or any other group who invaded or took the land and lives of other groups. Same goes for the Palestinians. They play the innocent/persecuted card all the time but they are brutal terrorists stealing the land and riches of others. Their current target is Israel and the Jewish people. If they get rid of them, Christians in the Middle East are next!
