What do they mean "one man in custody". Only one player was seen kicking the decedent in the neck with his skate. Might a bystander or vendor also be complicit?

Freak accident? Explain that a bit better.

If nothing else, this add to the conversation about any neck guard mandates.

A video--unfortunately, from some distance away--showed one player raising one foot high off the ice and striking another player in the neck area with the (sharp) blade of his ice skate. The cut player didn't instantly react, but within seconds probably knew he had sustained a fatal injury with uncontrollable blood loss. In five decades of watching NHL and Olympic hockey, I've seen plenty of high sticks that are duly punished by the officials, but can't recall anyone attempting the equivalent of a karate roundhouse kick to another player's face or neck. The charge should be murder. He obviously did it on purpose.

In a game the night before he was arrested Yetman was given a standing ovation. He’s got a reputation as a dirty player but I guess the whacked fans love him. Hopefully the charge sticks.

When you know you are wearing potential weapons on your feet, why would you ever raise your foot that high. Even if he had missed his neck, he could have seriously injured the guy he ultimately killed. Doing this was the height of irresponsibility. Was taking another man’s life worth it? I do not buy “in the heat of the moment” defense either. If you have a deadly weapon strapped to your feet, you cannot justify raising it toward another player. Accidents happen, but this move was unheard of in hockey according to the experts I have seen interviewed. It is a tragedy, but you cannot give the guy a pass. He must accept the consequences of his actions, a life was taken because of what he did.

It's not a "freak accident," unless it's common for hockey players to leap from the ice and perform flying sidekicks at their opponents' heads. This perp should do hard time for what he did.

First I’ll disqualify myself as my understanding of ice hockey is remote and relating it to lacrosse on ice. But in over 50 years of being a news junky I have never heard of a skate injury above waistline thus the uniforms likened to Bib the Michelin man. I thought it to be strictly forbidden for a skate to ever get above knee level at anytime?

In addition to jumps and spins, figure skaters practice moves with one skate lifted, sometimes, as high as the skater's stretch will allow. But that's in figure skating. #8 observes that he's never seen an NHL player in the heat of a game raise a skate any more than knee high. Neither have I. It's just not done by any player who's sane. Did Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Wayne Gretzsky, or any of today's NHL all-stars ever raise a skate neck high during a game? No!

Saw the video, the action was ON PURPOSE, there is No way his skate could end up that high unless on purpose. Time to get a ROPE!

The arrested man is also on video having performed the same move several years ago. He is the most penalized player in his league. We all know it was intentional, maybe not the outcome, but the move was meant to injure and intimidate.
