The next pandemic, dubbed the 'Big One,' could be 'simmering in the background,' waiting to unleash the most contagious and deadliest diseases known to humanity.
The paramyxovirus family has over 75 viruses, including mumps, measles and respiratory tract infections, and was added to the list of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases' pandemic pathogens to watch in October.
One of the viruses, the Nipah virus, can infect cells with receptors that regulate what gets in or out of cells that line the central nervous system and vital organs

Former President Obama has condemned the actions of Hamas against the state of Israel but has also expressed sympathy for innocent civilians in Gaza.
Speaking on the Pod Save America podcast about the conflict in the Middle East, the former president suggested the war was a 'moral reckoning for all of us'.
'If you want to solve the problem, then, you have to take in the whole truth', the president said.'And you then have to admit nobody's hands are clean, that all of us are complicit to some degree,' the former president continued.

According to sources who are speaking to NBC News, U.S. and EU officials are gently beginning to talk to Ukraine government officials about what steps might need to be taken to bring an end to the Ukraine-Russia war. Obviously, for those who do not pretend, we all know the decision to end this conflict comes down to the USA telling Ukraine President Zelenskyy to open peace talks with Russia.
The EU NATO alliance has recently started to show less interest in the maintenance of a U.S. proxy war against Russia,(snip)
Zelenskyy is running out of men to throw into the meat grinder; the troops and military leaders are actually defying

At least 200 million people worldwide could be forced out of their coastal city homes after scientists revealed they are sinking by up to five centimeters per year.
Researchers at the University of Rhode Island analyzed 99 places, finding that most are sinking faster than sea levels are rising, but 34 locations are dropping by more than one centimeter per year.
The team uncovered four sinking 'hot spot' cities in Bangladesh, China, the Philippines and Pakistan, with yearly subsidence rates of up to five centimeters.

CHICAGO — Sophee Langerman was on her way to a bicycle safety rally in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood in June when a car turning right rolled through a red light and slammed into her bike, which she was walking off the curb and into the crosswalk. The car was moving slowly enough that Langerman escaped serious injury, but the bicycle required extensive repairs. To Langerman, it’s another argument for ending a practice that almost all U.S. cities have embraced for decades: the legal prerogative for a driver to turn right after stopping at a red light. A dramatic rise in accidents

In public education’s latest blunder, the Oregon Department of Education has just decided that basic reading, writing and math skills are not required for students to graduate with a high school diploma.
Prior to the passage of Senate Bill 744 in the Oregon Legislative Assembly’s 2021 session, the state’s “Assessment of Essential Skills” requirement for high school graduation was sensible: “read and comprehend a variety of text, write clearly and accurately,” and “apply mathematics in a variety of settings.” Students were required to demonstrate these skills by “earning at or above a cut score on the Oregon Statewide Summative Assessment test.”

Ukraine’s newly appointed head of defense industry says he is working tirelessly to ramp up local arms production and wants to turn the country into a weapons production hub for the West.
Oleksandr Kamysyhin, the minister for strategic industries of Ukraine, said that Russia’s invasion of his country and the Israel-Hamas war raging in the Middle East have highlighted the need for countries to spend on their defense systems.
“We’re really focusing on making Ukraine the arsenal of the free world,” Kamyshin told The Associated Press in an interview late Friday.

On Friday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Source,” 2024 U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) responded to Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) accusing President Joe Biden of supporting Israel’s “genocide of the Palestinian people” by stating that “you’ve got to understand” Tlaib’s view and “I think the President needs to speak very clearly about a ceasefire.”
Host Kaitlan Collins asked, “Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib…tonight, she put out a new video, accusing President Biden of supporting, ‘the genocide of the Palestinian people.’ Do you agree with that sentiment?”

The stepdaughter of Vice President Harris is publicly raising money for Gaza, The Post has learned.
Ella Emhoff, 24 — whose father, First Gentleman Doug Emhoff, is Jewish — affixed a fundraising drive “supporting urgent relief for Gaza’s children” on her personal Instagram account. It makes no mention of the scores of Israeli children murdered among the 1,400 innocent Israelis killed by Hamas terrorists Oct. 7.
Her promotion puts the funding appeal in front of her 315,000 Instagram followers.
The fundraiser, which has netted more than $7.8 million so far, is being operated by the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund,

Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters massed in Washington, DC, Saturday afternoon before descending upon the White House to chant, “Allahu akbar” and “F–k Joe Biden” as they accused the president of genocide and demanded a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” the crowd dotted with Palestinian flags and signs cried at the start of the event, which drew attendees from across the country. The chant – which is growing increasingly popular in the wake of Hamas’ deadly incursion into southern Israel last month and Israel’s subsequent retaliatory attacks on Gaza – is widely considered antisemitic because it implies the elimination

Barack Obama is not a learned man, but it’s a mistake to confuse that with stupidity. He is, in fact, an extremely clever man. Combine that cleverness with the fact that he truly dislikes Israel and has aligned himself with those countries and groups that wish to destroy the country, complete with the genocide of all of its inhabitants, and you end up with someone who covertly signals to Israel’s enemies his ideological allegiance with them, even while seemingly treading a morally meaningless line right down the middle.
Those of us who have paid close attention to Obama over the years know that he dislikes Jews and Israel. Here

Instead of moving forward and returning to normalcy, health officials double down on precautionary measures to “limit the spread of RSV, the flu and COVID.”
This month, Santa Clara County decided that everyone — patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers alike — must don the all-too-familiar face masks in public patient care areas in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. This directive is not for a week or a month but for the entire “winter respiratory virus period,” Mercury News reported.
This mandate is slated to span from November 1 to the end of March. That’s a whole five months of mask-wearing, in spite of declining COVID cases.
