The Daily Chart: Public School Refuseniks

According to one estimate I have seen, in 1973 there were only about 13,000 children being homeschooled. Today the number is over 5 million—and may be much higher, as many states do not track the numbers very carefully. The Washington Post has noticed, and you can tell they are worried about it. (The left has always hated homeschooling, and the teachers unions rightly understand what a threat homeschooling is to their gravy train, as most public schools derive their revenue by how many students are enrolled.)

Comments:

An encouraging trend away from the indoctrination endemic to the government schools. What The Washington Post doesn't recognize (or won't admit) and Hayward doesn't point out is the reason why the number of homeschoolers remains so high after the end of COVID restrictions: Online classes allowed parents to see behind the curtain--to learn for the first time what rot the leftist NEA, et al., were force-feeding little Johnny and little Suzie. Involved, caring parents wanted no part of it.

In California a large percentage of public school students are Illegal. The schools intentionally refuse to 'count' them. Is the percentage over 50%? Remember most of the high property taxes in California go to public schools.

The Amish population in the US is currently estimated at 360,000. If 1/4 of them are school age, that's 90,000 home-schooled right there. I'll bet a box of donuts that the percentage of Amish that are school age is higher than 1/4!

The public schools want compliant students and parents. And drug up the kids that are on a less-than-easy learning spectrum.

Home schooled kids have a future, while public school kids are destined to minimum wage jobs.

My biggest concern with homeschooling (the grandson was homeschooled) is that the kids don't go through "the school of hard knocks" (that is the public schools) that makes them confront their idealism against the real world. Not that I want them to lose their idealism, just better experience that dichotomy and develop more nuanced methods of handling it. (Once upon a time, I met Bowe Bergdahl's parents. I said, "He was homeschooled, wasn't he?" He was.)

Sure, you could study hard to get a degree. But at Spelman, where I taught, you could also get a top administrator to change your grades. When I accepted a tenure-track position in the economics department of Spelman College in the spring of 2021, handing out bogus grades was the last thing on my mind. Spelman, after all, has a great reputation. Based in Atlanta, it’s a women-only historically black college, one of the oldest in the country; for the past 15 years, it’s been rated the number one HBCU by U.S. News & World Report.

The superintendent of a New Jersey school district banned official school-wide Halloween celebrations under the guise of “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” claiming the festivities may offend people from various cultural and religious backgrounds. Families of students in the South Orange & Maplewood School District district received a letter on Oct. 6 from Dr. Ronald G. Taylor, the superintendent of SOMD, asking parents to reflect upon how school-sponsored Halloween celebrations exacerbate inequity.

oxic plumes and neon orange bodies of water are quite an ironic legacy for “clean” and “green” energy—how anyone can miss a paradox that in-your-face is beyond me (but that’s beside the point). Two stories out this week highlighted the growing concern over the “reckless” transition to the globalists’ vision of the energy industry: the first questioned whether or not public services were “equipped” to handle the unique “challenges and risks” posed when electric vehicle batteries catch fire, while the second covered a brand-new study published yesterday by Science Magazine, one of the world’s most prestigious, longstanding, and recognized academic journals (it first entered circulation almost 150 years ago).

All Democrats do to win elections….other than rigging and fixing them with mail-in ballots [etc.]... by bribing the voters. It’s called “Highway Bribery.” They bribe the poor with welfare, food stamps, free healthcare and a hundred other government handouts.... And they bribe young voters by erasing student loan debt. ... with the implicit understanding they will vote Democrat as a thank you. I say two can play at that game... President Trump, please announce if you are elected in 2024, you will lead the fight to end all taxes on Social Security.

It’s often asked in my circles: Why isn’t Joe Biden getting more credit for his accomplishments?... There is no one reason. But there is one overwhelming factor in play: the media. Or rather, the two medias... We reside in a media environment that promotes—whether it intends to or not—right-wing authoritarian spectacle. At the same time, as a culture, it’s consistently obsessed with who “won the day,” while placing far less value on the fact that the civic and democratic health of the country is nurtured through practices such as deliberation, compromise, and sober governance. The result is bad for Joe Biden. But it’s potentially tragic for democracy.

t was February of 1992 and President George H. W. Bush, while out campaigning for reelection, gave a speech to the National Grocers Association. What could possibly go wrong? It was a non-event, evidenced by the fact that only one pool reporter was present, Gregg McDonald of the Houston Chronicle. Before Bush gave the speech, he toured the new grocer technology, including a state-of-the-art scanner that could weigh produce and read damaged bar codes. In his report, McDonald noted that the president had a "look of wonder" on his face as he admired the new technology.

How did the fascist left get the right to decree the meaning of every bloody word in the dictionary? If there’s one thing every nation’s socialist left has been good at, it’s propaganda and wordplay. Joseph Goebbels, Saul Alinsky, and others were masters at the art of lying with language. (Imagining with amusement, leftists out there losing their collective minds over the fact that we just dared to compare their hero to Saul Alinsky or the other way around, but I digress.) Americans justly love cars, for necessity, for pleasure, and everything in between. In all we drive more than three trillion miles per year, in 290 million registered cars, of which some 287 million are internal combustion engines.
