Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva is being held after visiting her family in the Russian city of Kazan and now faces charges, colleagues say.
An editor for US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Prague, she was temporarily detained on 2 June.
She was arrested again on Wednesday and charged with failing to register as a foreign agent, which carries a jail term of up to five years.
Ms Kurmasheva is the second US journalist held in Russia this year.
Wall Street Journal Moscow correspondent Evan Gershkovich, 31, was arrested in March and charged with espionage. Earlier this month a court in Moscow rejected an appeal and ordered him to remain in detention.

Key words here: "Russian-American citizen." If you are a Russian citizen in Russia, you are going to have to live under their laws and whims. The fact that you are a dual citizen doesn't mean much in the eyes of the Russian government.
My son was adopted from Russia at age 2. He went back with his mother to his home at age 12 or so. Had to travel on a Russian passport, his American passport would not admit him to the country. Once he reached age 16, he for all practical purposes cannot travel to Russia until he is 46 years old, since Russia requires all Russian men between 16 and 45 to perform 2 years of military service. His American passport won't do him much good, if any (especially with the old fogey we have "in charge").
If you are a dual citizen of any country where their relations with the US, are shall we say, strained, traveling there is not a wise option. And anyway, regardless of the country where you travel, you should live and act in acknowledgement of the laws and regulations of that place. After all, you are a guest.

US citizens have been advised not to travel to Russia - even for family emergencies. She's at the mercy of the Russian legal system.

I'm glad not to travel to Russia on business any more. While I was frequently traveling there, the Russians arrested six BP oil engineers "for espionage". The real situation was that BP had signed a deal to accept 49% ownership in a huge oil field in Russia, in exchange for bringing billions of modern oil equipment, and billions more in expertise to bring inefficient, out dated, broken down Russian oil production up to date. So, after BP spent the tens of billions and applied their expertise - the Russians wanted them OUT, but BP intended to take 49% of the revenues for many, many years to pay back their investments. The Russians offered to "buy out" BP for something like 20% of what the 49% was worth. BP declined, even under significant pressure. So, Russia arrested six senior engineers.
Then they offered LESS money to buy out BP. After some negotiation where the suckers at BP finally realized that Russians CANNOT be trusted, ever, they "sold" their 49% to Gazprom (the Russian government) and got their people out.
I'm really glad that I don't go back to Russia again. When the war is over, I'll probably visit Ukraine again, but never again go to Russia.

Putin is just jumping on the "America Pays Top Dollar for Hostages" bandwagon.
He accepts, cash, gold, oil, arms, and Paypal.
