The Washington Post is putting a damper on the fall by invoking the "violent history" of America's beloved seasonal tradition: pumpkin spice.
The report titled "Fall’s favorite spice blend has a violent history" set the scene of the Dutch's 1621 invasion of the Banda Islands (located in modern day Indonesia), detailing that "Thousands were killed, others enslaved, and many who fled to the mountains were starved out."
University of Texas at Austin historian Adam Clulow told The Post, "The Dutch company was later accused of carrying out what some describe as the first instance of corporate genocide. . . . And it was all for nutmeg."

History is replete with crazy stuff done for stupid things. Why, speaking of the Dutch, did anyone say, "Tulips?" Salt was another commodity that provoked many a battle over the white stuff, and the Romans actually paid their soldiers with it. The etymology of our word, "Salary," comes from the word, "Salt."
Hundreds of years ago it didn't take much of anything to bring about enslavement. It was a manner of life in most all nations.

You never hear them talk about the genocidal history of Communism, Socialism.....and let's not forget about all the lynchings perpetrated by Democrats.

I find the seasonal attention given to pumpkin spice everything to be tedious and boring but the history of the Dutch has nothing to do with obnoxious modern-day marketing practices. I do like the fact that WaPo writers can occasionally create something that doesn't say "I hate Donald Trump."

Like turkey, I love pumpkin spice this time of year for a couple months. Then I'm tired of it.
Trust academics to try to ruin something that people enjoy.

Least we forget that all of the fighting between France, Britain and Spain in the Caribbean was largely over sugar. Had the colonies produced it, England would never have given up America. Back then, the Caribbean islands were more valuable than the "colonies". And the sugar trade needed a lot of slaves.

How, exactly, does one become a “food historian” or a “spice historian”? More importantly, how does one earn a living in those “professions”?

Forgive the second post. If anything I use or do was touched by slavery or violence hundreds of years ago; well, I simply do not care.

I know I shouldn’t be surprised but it’s fascinating how much effort is expended by the WaPoo in finding ways to denigrate white people and capitalism.

The same spices that are used in Pumpkin Pie are used in Sweet Potato Pie.
I have a hard time telling the difference, and eat both and will continue to and the WAPO can KMA.

Someone needs to tell the obnoxiously 'woke' Penzey's spice company they are guilty of supporting slavery.

How many people know where Indonesia is? Many don’t even know where Mexico or Canada is! And does anyone give a flying fig about the origins of these spices? I think not, except this “spice historian” who wants everyone to know he is important.

It must suck to see the world through the eyes of anger, resentment and oppression.

I’m curious to know what these butt hurt ‘woke-warriors’ wear. Surely they wouldn’t wear cotton, being such a history of slavery surrounding its processing. And surely they wouldn’t wear synthetics, with them being by-products of fossil fuels. Hmm…paper? But, ohhh the trees that died!

History itself has a violent history! Everything in it. Even the “peaceful” Buddhists over in Asia have committed horrible genocidal acts.
The point is to learn from it, not to beat yourself up with some stupid misplaced guilt for enjoying the aroma of fresh baked pumpkin pie.

Oh fer Chrissake. Of course, it would be a “professor” at a university to agonize over something this trivial.

I hate pumpkin and don't care much for the kinds of spices that are used in the making of all the "pumpkin spice" products. So i have no problem with boycotting the pumpkin everything on the market. But this is just stupid to the highest level. I am so tired of stupid. And because this is so stupid I am going out to buy a supply of pumpkin goodies for one of my sisters who loves the crap.

Idiots "worry" about ancient history which has zero bearing on today, and have no clue how to make the world actually WORK today.
Dangerous, mentally deranged fools.
