Europe has officially reclaimed the Ryder Cup. Winning 16.5 to 11.5, it leaned on star players and a sensational team effort across the first two days to win the competition for the eighth time in the last 11 editions and seventh straight when hosting the event dating back to 1997.
Tommy Fleetwood won the key half point in the 11th match against Rickie Fowler. Heading to the par-4 16th with a one-hole lead, Fleetwood hit his tee shot to 23 feet after Fowler found the water. After Fleetwood missed an eagle putt, Fowler conceded a 2-foot, 8-inch birdie putt -- and Europe's victory. Fleetwood's win on the hole secured at worse

What's lost is lost. Do it with class, and Ricky's concession of Tommy's birdie putt to put Tommy dormie (2 up with two to play), guaranteeing the half point the EUs needed to win the Cup, was proper. The Euros played enough better in the first day and a half of competition to make the Americans' winning a near statistical impossibility. Nonetheless, the Americans made it a fight. No matter how good you are, sometimes you lose. Your opponent is there for a reason: he's very, very good. You have to play your best to beat him. If you don't, he will win. That's sports. Come back and get them in two years. Most of the players on both teams are friends off the course, and that's how it should be. Mr. Nicklaus taught many of us how to win and lose gracefully, as a sportsman should.
But international competitions bring a different kind of pressure. In 1969 at Royal Birkdale, the anchor match was between Tony Jacklin (the Open Champion in 1969 and U.S. Open champion in 1970) and Jack Nicklaus, who needs no introduction. The teams were tied 15 1/2 to 15 1/2. Birkdale ends with two par 5's. Jacklin eagled #17 to draw even with Nicklaus, and both hit the eighteenth green in two, with eagle putts. Nicklaus ran his first putt five feet past while Jacklin lagged his eagle putt two feet short. The last two putts were for the Ryder Cup. Nicklaus, the greatest champion in the history of golf, was used to making putts to win majors, which he did eighteen times (and, BTW, finished second nineteen times, which is almost as impressive as his eighteen professional majors). Now he faced a putt that, if missed, would send the Ryder Cup to the British. (Before the early 'Eighties, the Ryder Cup had been USA vs Great Britain and Ireland. Nicklaus himself played a major role in opening the Ryder to all of Europe. Prior to the 1980s, the USA team nearly always won. How could you lose with both Arnie and Jack?) In his autobiography, Nicklaus admitted to being "terrified" of that five footer for everything. "I wasn't just putting for myself. I was putting for my country." Being Jack with a constitution of steel, he made that putt. If my life depended on a certain putt being made, I'd get Jack to putt it for me. Then Jack, being the sportsman that he is, conceded Jacklin's putt. Some teammates and Captain Sam Snead were not pleased, but I think Jack did the right thing. Because he always does the right thing. Ricky, under different circumstances, did the right thing, too.
Mr. Nicklaus taught all of us young players how to do it with class. We copied him.

Are the Europeans the better golfers? Yes, obviously especially in a match play format.

Love your post(s), #1. It ticks me off that you’re Vandy. Much (reluctant) affection, UTK ‘75.

I always enjoy #1 — I learn something new from almost every post.
But I didn’t know he’s Vandy. At least he’s in the SEC.
WDE!

I lost track of how many matches Americans halved after leading 1up with one hole to play. That is not Zach Johnson’s fault.

I'll ask again: Why was Rory yelling at Bones?

#3 and #4 are correct. I am Vandy! Vandy in the flesh (BA, 1977, English), the Commodore himself with a cartoon head three feet wide and a huge smile. Incidentally, my late best friend who was a close as a brother to me graduated from UT Knoxville with a BS in mathematics. He and I never held the other's respective school against him. Unless they're playing Vanderbilt, I always root for Tennessee. Born in Nashville.
