a grotesque political polemic

Stephen King just published his most recent horror novel, Holly. Disappointing does not begin to describe it. Do not purchase Stephen King’s Holly if your goal is to be entertained. This book is a poisonous political diatribe from beginning to end.
King, America’s premier storyteller of the past 50 years, has never hidden his left-wing political bias. But before the mess that is Holly, King kept himself in check, never making politics central to his story nor demonizing those who do not share his ideology by using fact patterns unmoored from any sort of reality.
With Holly, King has jumped the shark.
I haven’t read a King book since the 90s. His early books were wonderful but then he gained fame and fortune, moved to California and the rot set in. You could see it in his books and interviews. He just wasn’t the same person anymore.

I stopped reading King years ago. All of his books are in a cardboard box in my basement.

I enjoy a good mystery but have never read one of his books which are horror novels. We wonder why so many horrible things are happening. Just take a look at what people are reading and watching. since his books are made into horror movies for people to watch for entertainment. SICK!!!

I tried to read a King book once, thought it was crap, stopped after 30 or 40 pages of what I thought was terrible writing, never tried again. I can't understand how people read that stuff.

Maybe Ken Burns or Michael Moore can make the movie.

I've never read a King book either, though I remember seeing the movie Fire Starter. One of my kids must have rented it. I don't read horror books or watch them on TV or anything that deals with the supernatural.
Off topic, some years ago, visiting my brother at Christmas, I saw several Stephen King books around the house. I asked him if he liked the stories and he said 'no, but Teresa and the kids like them'. Then he added...'And I sleep with a gun under my pillow.'

Started reading King around '75 and stayed with him until his lurch hard-left and when Lee Child came along and blew him off my radar. You never have to wonder if Reacher is a closet pinko.

Meh. I read biographies, military history and/or aviation related books. Never had time or interest for his kind of sorry pulp.

Thanks for your very important book review. I am just completing my reading of a bargain priced ebook copy of The Outsider, in which the Holly character is introduced. I certainly will not read Holly now that I know how Stephen King vents his leftist bent in the Holly book. For a story which strays into the supernatural I would much prefer to read anything by Dean Koontz, who apparently has not been indoctrinated by the leftist cult.

My liberal daughter reads King, I wouldn't buy one of his books if they offered it for a dime! Like Poster#8, I read Lee Childs.

I was an avid King reader back in the 70s & 80s. The Stand is still one of my favorite books. However, I stopped reading many years ago when his stories morphed into bizarre bloody messes, and he began to declare his political stripes. One commenter on this story wrote that King has now become Jack Torrence at the end of The Shining. Perfect analogy.

One reason to read is to be entertained. If I am reading something to be entertained, I don't want to be lectured. Especially by some author that's employed by our government's 'ministry of literature'.

Somewhat related to this. I was watching Jim Gaiffigan’s latest stand up comedy special on Prime the other night ( though wondering beforehand why it only got a two star rating).
Now I’ve always been aware of his left wing politics but let it go because he never addressed it, ever, in his shows. Well in this one he finally let it rip. First with the ant-vaxers, then with the climate change deniers. I shut it off after that.
But I did think that I hoped he’s earned enough to support the five kids he always talks about cuz he just flushed a very successful career down the toilet.

The only King book I thought was any good was "'Salem's Lot." The rest were overwritten and underedited. I quit reading his books after "The Shining" which bored me to tears. I skipped 5-10 pages at a time, and never lost the plot.

I've never been able to read more than a few pages of King. He's a mediocre writer, at best. Highly over-rated.

I used to inhale King’s books because they were always nail biters by a great storyteller. That ended in 1994 with his book “Insomnia” which went after pro-lifers. I haven’t read a single page since.

I just finished reading all of the replies and have to give a big thumb’s up to the Reacher fans. I’m on book 24 having spent the last two months rereading the entire series while awaiting the next book coming out in October. And #10 is right - the best alternative out there to King is Dean Koontz who is a conservative Catholic. “Watchers” is my all time favorite.

I also gave up on King years ago. He is a psycho. I’m praying this book doesn’t end up a best seller.

Because King runs his fool mouth about politics, I boycott his books. I won't even check them out at my library.

I'll admit King's books (along with authors John Grisham, Tom Clancy and Larry Bond) helped get me through my early Naval deployments back in the 80s and 90s. However due to fame, virulent leftism, TDS or whatever King has become a loon. As such I haven't read anything he's written since GWB was in office and will never again.

Turgid comes to mind when someone mentions King writing efforts. Horrible, boring, rehashed ideas. Pick ANY book off the shelf at random from your local library and you will be better informed, entertained and stimulated, vs depressed with a headache.
