A bill that would allow killers serving a life sentence without parole to possibly be re-sentenced cleared a major hurdle Friday in California's Democratic-led state Legislature.
The state Assembly Appropriations Committee advanced Senate Bill 94, which now moves to the next phase of voting. The bill would allow California prison inmates serving a sentence of life without parole (LWOP) for certain crimes to petition for re-sentencing if the offense occurred before June 5, 1990, and the completion of at least 25 years of their sentence.

A federal judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit filed by a Florida lawyer who claimed Trump should be banned from the 2024 ballot for inciting an insurrection.
The legal theory is based on Section 3 of the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment which states public officials who have “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against” the US may be disqualified from public office.
Trump has not been charged with engaging in insurrection or rebellion against the United States.
Judge Robin Rosenberg a US District Judge for the Southern District of Florida ruled the attorney, Lawrence Caplan, lacked standing to bring the lawsuit.

A one-time leader in the Proud Boys far-right extremist group was sentenced Friday to 18 years in prison for his role in the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, tying the record for the longest sentence in the attack.
Ethan Nordean was one of five members who have been convicted so far of spearheading an attack on the U.S. Capitol to try to prevent the peaceful transfer of power from Donald Trump to Joe Biden after the 2020 presidential election.
'He is the undisputed leader on the ground on January 6,' said prosecutor Jason McCullough.

Officials in Texas are urging residents to flee their homes after a massive wildfire broke out north of Houston.
According to the Walker County Office of Emergency Management, a major fire erupted Friday afternoon in a wooded area along Lost Indian Camp Road.
The latest update from officials said that the fire had stretched to encompass 500 acres and remained uncontained. Just hours previously, the fire was estimated to be spread out across 100 acres, which has prompted officials to ask those living in the area to flee.

President Joe Biden defended Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) following his freeze at a Kentucky press gaggle on Wednesday and said he expects McConnell “to get back to his old self.”
During his visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) headquarters in Washington, DC, on Thursday, a reporter asked Biden if he had spoken with McConnell.
“He’s a friend, and I spoke to him today, and, you know, he was his old self on the telephone,” Biden said. He noted McConnell’s concussion from earlier in the year, which sidelined him for nearly six weeks, and said the episode is “part of the recovery.”

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson said that he will move to broadcast publicly the social media training he was ordered to undergo by a psychologist governing body that targeted Peterson for criticizing transgender ideology, climate alarmism, and the Canadian government.
Peterson told Fox News host Jesse Watters on Thursday that he hoped to film or audio record all sessions of the court-upheld social media training. Last week, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ruled that the College of Psychologists of Ontario could mandate Peterson to go through a so-called “specified continuing education or remedial program.”

The entire case against Trump and his fellow defendants in the 2020 election-interference prosecutions can't even get off the ground unless it is more or less evidently true that the election was not stolen.
The fact of the matter is that it's not unreasonable to believe that the election was stolen, and consequently it isn't possible for it to be (more or less) evidently true that the election was not stolen. That is why the case against Trump and his collaborators necessarily collapses, whether or not a corrupted legal system recognizes this. There is no case against Trump and his confreres insofar as it's reasonable to believe

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis does not expect to join President Biden when the president visits his storm-ravaged home state Saturday, his spokesman said Friday.
The apparent snub comes even as Floridans are seeking federal infusions worth billions to recover from massive destruction in the path of Hurricane Idalia – and after the president said he would meet with DeSantis when asked about it.
A DeSantis spokesman said DeSantis, who is a top Republican presidential contender, has 'no plans' to meet Biden. That comes despite the president responding 'yes' when asked Friday if he planned to meet with DeSantis,

EAGLE PASS, Texas — In what has become an almost daily occurrence, a large group of more than 100 migrants crossed the Rio Grande just north of Eagle Pass to surrender to awaiting Border Patrol agents during the early morning hours on Friday. Shares of several big media and entertainment companies tumbled Friday as investors considered the potential fallout from an impasse between cable giant Charter Communications and media titan Walt Disney Co.
On Thursday, Disney said it had pulled major networks such as ESPN and ABC from Charter systems after the two companies could not come to terms on a renewal of their carriage license. Charter’s systems reach a little under 15 million subscribers in markets that include New York City and Los Angeles. Charter raised eyebrows Friday morning by declaring that it could not strike a traditional renewal pact with Disney while more cable subscribers were fleeing to streaming video on demand.

The U.S. Border Patrol arrested 91,000 migrants who crossed as part of a family group in August, breaking the previous one-month record of 84,486 that was set in May 2019.

More than half a million migrants who arrived as part of “family member units” have now surrendered at the border this fiscal year, breaking yet another record.

NAPLES, Fla. – From yard art to paintings, sculptures, mailboxes, T-shirts, ties, socks and underwear, the likeness of a flamingo can show up nearly anywhere in Florida.
Flamingos even adorn Florida's highly coveted lottery tickets, but there's still doubt that the bird ever lived here.
This week, flamingos showed up in the flesh as dozens of the birds were reported along the west coast of Florida – just as Hurricane Idalia chugged northward through the Gulf of Mexico. One sighting was at the Sanibel Causeway in southwest Florida.
It was the first time a flamingo had ever been documented in places like Alachua County, about 80 miles southwest of Jacksonville.

The White House briefing room has been the site of a lot of bad and bizarre things. Most of that stuff has come from the mouth of White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre or other members of the Biden communications team or the liberal media reporters spouting the spoon-fed narrative.
We saw on Thursday how Jean-Pierre was left stammering and disturbed when asked about Biden's biographer saying Biden admitted to being frequently "tired." Jean-Pierre also had blown off the question of why the doctor was with Biden the day before, claiming that she wasn't aware of the situation. If it wasn't a scheduled visit, that raises even more questions.

Joe Biden lied repeatedly when he claimed he knew nothing of his son Hunter's influence-peddling businesses.
The president further prevaricated that he had no involvement in Hunter's various shake-down schemes. Yet, the media continued to misinform by serially ignoring these facts.
Had journalists just been honest and independent, then-candidate Joe Biden might have lost a presidential debate and even the 2020 election. The public would have learned that Hunter's business associates and his laptop proved Joe was deeply involved in his son's illicit businesses.

As vice president, Al Gore led the negotiations to establish the U.N. Kyoto Protocol in 1998. The Kyoto Protocol was a "climate treaty" ostensibly designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the signatories during the period 2005–2012 to a level equivalent to 95% of each country's 1990 emissions. While it did not introduce any new scientific means to reduce CO2 emissions (worldwide CO2 emissions grew by 32% during the period), the Kyoto Protocol introduced a novel economic concept: the trading of carbon credits and offsets.
At first, the concept of trading carbon credits was straightforward; it was known as "cap and trade."

Hunter Biden’s laptop is a treasure trove of potentially felonious activity. It’s a roadmap into the entire Biden operation concerning shady deals with corrupt oligarchs whose monies were funneled into shell companies owned by the family. These proceeds soared into the millions of dollars, which explains the over 170 suspicious activity reports from six banks regarding the family’s financial transactions. Joe Biden’s son raked in $20 million from these people—he still didn’t know what was going on? Any parent would know, and Hunter isn’t one to keep his mouth shut about his lucrative exploits. They’ve had their senile mouthpiece babbling about “assault weapons” almost from the moment he was installed in the Oval Office.
Democrats don’t have a lot of luck with sweeping gun control legislation for a couple of reasons. The first is that they keep passing laws that make gun owners who have adhered to the law criminals overnight. These laws eventually find their way to a judge or a court that says, “Yeah…no.”

Here it is: the biggest missed story of this century is the incredible dumbing down of the American public, to the point where a cripplingly large portion of the adult population is no longer willing or able to exercise independent critical thinking in order to take decisive action on a wide range of issues that shape the direction of our economy, culture, and personal freedoms. A Texas law banning transgender care for minors will go into effect on Friday, now that the state Supreme Court has lifted a temporary injunction issued by a lower court.
Last week, a Texas district judge ruled that the law banning the medical transition of minors violated the rights of transgender children, as well as the alleged rights of doctors who follow “well-established, evidence-based” medical guidelines. After the judge issued the temporary injunction, Texas officials immediately appealed to the state Supreme Court, the highest court for civil cases in the state.
The order from the Supreme Court lifting the injunction provided no further explanation as to the constitutional reasoning behind
