Pope Francis has appealed for more changes in Catholic teaching, lamenting the “backwardism” of conservative Catholics in the United States. (snip) During his interview, the pope also insisted that the Church must pay less attention to “sins of the flesh” and more to other sins. (snip) “But what I don’t like at all, in general, is that we look at the so-called ‘sin of the flesh’ with a magnifying glass, just as we have done for so long for the sixth commandment,” he said. “If you exploited workers, if you lied or cheated, it didn’t matter, and instead sins below the waist were relevant.”

Sins of the flesh have cost the Catholic church in the US a catastrophic amount of money. So is the Holy Father saying that they are less important than, say stopping the use of fossil fuels?

Not wanting to be a Communist is "reactionary"....yeah, we know that Communists are responsible for about 150 million dead people in the 20th century, and we react badly to that FACT.
This Pope is a Communist, and NOT a Catholic.

FTA: “In other words, ideology replaces faith, membership of a sector of the Church replaces membership of the Church,” he said, in apparent reference to conservative or traditional Catholics. Really? Tell that to the Catholic parents recently denied the ability to foster children because of their religion. You're right on ideology replacing faith, Pope, But you're focused on the wrong ideology.

The Vatican has to be wondering why their income and membership is dropping. Could it be that people are getting tired of the anti-God's word hypocrisy from the Vatican? Stay tuned.

I’m not a catholic but if I were, this would really burn my incense. He’s straw manning in the most vulgar way. Who are these “backward” Catholics who are saying “lying and cheating didn’t matter?”

This is why the Catholic church is losing members. God's word is the same yesterday, today and always.

As a non-Catholic, my heart goes out to faithful Catholics having to deal with this man at the helm of the church they love and revere.

# 9, this Catholic appreciates your sentiments and my wife, a Southern Baptist, agrees with you.
I sometimes kid around with her and say, "You Protestants have it so easy." :-)

So the pope elected in the aftermath of the gay pedo priest scandal wants us to stop focusing on "sins below the waist."
What's next, lining up convicted pedo priests as martyrs on the path to cannonization?
Well we've had corrupt popes in the past and the Church survived just as Jesus promised.
Better to focus on the prayer popularized by St Pope John Paul the Great: Jesus I trust in You!

When I'm affected at the local level by this pope I will no longer be attending mass. That will save me a lot of money so there is a silver lining.

I see a similarity between Joe Bidens destruction of America and his Popes destruction of the Church.
Joe Biden is done, he will never be President again, but we have to wait for God to take the bad Pope away.

The Ten Commandments isn't a menu where you can pick and chose which ones you will obey. Theses are ten ways for a society to live and thrive. Did this dud study theology In the back seat of Karl Marx's car?

It's just as lamentable to shift the imbalanced attention away from sins of the flesh, to be preoccupied with abstractions of social justice while winking at those who let their fleshly desires and appetites govern them. The Apostolic witness warned against both types of sin, alternating between exhortations to live justly and appeals to "make no provisions for the needs of the body" ... to live for the spirit and not for the flesh, because we are made spiritual beings in our Baptism.

Amen, #8. He’s the reason I haven’t attended mass since covid began. He lost me when he invited Muslims into St. Peter’s on Holy Thursday and washed their feet. The cancelation of Easter due to covid was the last straw.

Is he saying that homo sex is ok but hetero sex before marriage is a sin? The Head Office in the Vatican handled the sexual crimes in their franchises dreadfully. Jesus weeps.

Satan walks the earth in many human forms. 50 years ago at a Catholic University I experienced the shock and dismay of finding out that the operation was a giant hoax. The Catholic Church embraced socialism, lawlessness, and sexual perversion. It may have been saved if it allowed married priests a century ago, at the same time purging the institution of European hedonist ideology. Now it is too late.
