Sixty years ago, Beatlemania was rocking the world of music. Writing in the Atlantic, Colin Fleming refers to 1963 as “that magical and formative year for the band,” “the year the Beatles found their voice,” and “the band’s annus mirabilis.” It set the stage for their fabled first visit to America in February 1964. I was 10 years old in 1963 but I well remember black-and-white newscasts of large British audiences screaming adulation at Beatles performances.

A despicable Communist, and "Imagine" is just evil words set to a nice tune.

Well it’s good to know he wasn’t a saint. Will that knowledge turn the listeners to “Imagine” away from tyrants promising world peace and utopia? Compared to Big Bidet he’s pretty good. I just saw a quote from Biggy Bidet’s daughter’s diary saying she lived in dread of him coming into the shower with her. I guess now everyone that loves him will spit the hook- or emulate him.

I agree John Lennon was no saint, and I found his music after the Beatles to be somewhat mediocre, but this article seems a bit over the top.

John was a capitalist, not a communist. Imagine is a silly song. I don't believe John meant a minute of it. It's as ridiculous as the people who were jogging behind Forrest Gump thinking it was for some noble cause..

Re #4, he espoused Marxism, and the song is explicitly antiChristian, antiGod.

If I hear that cringey song Happy Christmas War is Over during my Christmas music cheer every November December time frame I'm going to turn into a Grinch. Seriously though I've said for years that George Harrison was my favorite Beatle and more talented than John. For hardcore Beatles fans that are friends of mine I always get flack for that.

George was my favorite as well and I actually find that a lot of people say that. I too think that he was incredibly talented.

I've always considered him to be overrated. Most of his songs are of the silly, childish variety, IMHO. Check out the album cover of the Beatles' "Yesterday and Today." It's stomach-churning.

Some people imagine the pre-sin days in "The Garden of Eden." Should they be horsewhipped? Perhaps Lawrence W. Reed would have something to say about that and sin. It's good to know that John Lennon was a human being who once wore a younger man's clothes. Beauty is often not without imperfections. I say God bless John's soul and may he rest in peace.
Is the song art or a naive revolution? Or both? How about an honest journalist without bias? Imagine that.

Whenever a Beatles song comes over the air, pay close attention to the lyrics. Regardless if the song was co-written by McCartney, as most were, the lyrics are usually Lennon's, and they're just a bunch of psychobabble. More than most of John's songs are tortuous psychobabble trying to sound relevant. For sure they wrote nice melodies, with a few brilliant songs set amongst them, but the lyrics are mostly psych-sessions, as John tries to examine himself in front of the world.

"Imagine" is an insidiously evil song because it is so easily dismissed, as proved by the comments on this thread. The beautiful music is the hook. The tune is so lovely and appealing that it opens the mind to uncritically accept lyrics that are simple short phrases of communist subliminal indoctrination. This author exposes the reality behind each line. I'll highlight the first; the most important and foundational to Communism.
FTA: "...starting with “Imagine there’s no Heaven; It’s easy if you try; No Hell below us; Above us only sky.” In plain language, that suggests we should pretend humanity is just an accident. No Creator, no afterlife, no ultimate justice or accountability, simply the here-and-now and that’s it. That’s been the formula for the worst tyrannies and mass murders in world history, and Khmer Rouge Cambodia was the quintessential example. In urging listeners to imagine neither Heaven nor religion (and therefore no Creator), the song defies what science is increasingly debunking, namely, that everything evolved out of nothing and has neither a beginner or a beginning."
We are living the consequences of removing God from society, which we have discussed it endlessly on this forum. I encourage a thoughtful reading of this article, and perhaps a reconsideration of one's own perception of this song. This anthem of the "modern" world has assisted Western civilization's turn away from God. "Imagine" is a far cry from "Onward Christian Soldiers".

First off, I could not agree more with this article's dissection of "Imagine." Atheist/communist propaganda wrapped up with a saccharine "dare to dream big" label.
That said, remember that John was abandoned by both his parents, raised by a disapproving, emotionally distant aunt, then got his girlfriend pregnant. No surprise the resulting marriage didn't work out, though there is no excusing his abuse. Then he found himself in a worldwide spotlight at the age his peers might have been graduating from college.
No wonder his Beatles-era works are filled with anger and alienation. And no wonder he was a sitting duck, emotionally, for Yoko. As with a lot of talented people, he was surrounded by people making money off him. After his death, the Peace Visionary(TM) brand was indelible.
John Lennon was a flawed human being who, like many other artists, vented through his works, some good, some bad.

He did not expouse Maxism he was a capitalist - "If you go carrying picture of Chairman Mao, you're not going to make it with anybody any how."

Lennon has been dead for over 40 years. The fact that "Imagine" is played over and over and over say more about society over the last 40 years than the man himself.

I,too, found Lennon creepy.
“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” is a favorite, though. I think it was written by Harrison (a true talent) but performed by the amazing Eric Clapton.

Haters gotta hate. Dead 43 years & still being libeled for something he really didn't say. Reed just makes Lennon's point.

Finally, someone has written the truth about John Lennon, the most overrated rock star of the sixties - bad husband, neglectful father, heroin addict, marginally-talented composer, and communist.
