When I was 7, America elected a fellow named John Kennedy president. He had been a senator and he was witty.(snip)Looking back as an adult, I realize he was not joking. He was bragging. But he was so charming that I secretly have wished for a Republican John Kennedy. Ronald Reagan came close. Donald Trump too. Maybe the John Kennedy we need is the senator by that very name from Louisiana. He uses humor and common sense to make his point and his points are always good ones.(snip)He was a Louisiana Democrat until he (snip)converted to Republican but skipped the testicle-removal ceremony.

Ir would be shame for LDotters to miss this column. Surber has collected some of our Kennedy’s finest. He is no dummy. Real wit - not driveby stuff - requires intelligence:
He plays the blunt good old boy so well, he could have been Buford T. Justice in Smokey and the Bandit, but without the swearing. He also graduated from Vanderbilt, got a University of Virginia law degree and was educated at Oxford. Good old boys ain’t dumb, as Northerners who underestimate them learn over and over again.
He uses quips the way Zorro wields a sword.
Surber has assembled quite a few here...

As I have noted previously here, we, in my house, consider Senator Kennedy to be a natinal treasure. When his face appears on the TV screen, whoever sees it first, issues a call to order (or to assembly,,) to watch and listen.
He holds the perfect position for the use of his skill set, and probably would not wear well as President..
But, God bless you, Senator Kennedy. You are doing the Lord's work, and you are doing it well

Senator Kennedy is my favorite in the Senate and is likely among the smartest, but then again you 48 dopes there as Democrats - so that was easy.

I live in Louisiana and just so you will know, John Kennedy didn’t always have such an exaggerated accent nor did he exude folksy charm. This is a fairly recent development. I like what he says, but he does not always follow through on the things he says he believes in. He looks good on tv, though.

Snarky, sarcastic, right on the mark humor. Love it. I'd put Mr. Kennedy up against Adam Sh*** any day of the week.

Watching Kennedy and Cruz eviscerate Biden's moron judicial nominees is great sport. The dingbat women are a special treat.

Although we have a negatve opinion floaing in the punch bowl, his history makes it clear that he is a smart cookie and has a southern accent as his birthright. Humor is best when it is hatched in a good brain. We all get a little folksy as we get older.Folksy or crotchety. Here is a look at hs history and accomplishments.

Kennedy is the 21st Century’s Mark Twain.

He is my senator and one day the local radio show had a "Is this quote from Senator Kennedy of Foghorn Leghorn?" It was very difficult to guess!
One of my favorites is: "Democrats are running around like they found a hair in their biscuit."
He is incredibly entertaining and as folksy as Mark Twain (as poster #11 pointed out)
That being said, I have learned to never fully trust a grown man who decided to switch to be a republican in order to get elected. We totally got played by our other senator Bill Cassidy (democrat turned RINO).
If you were ever a democrat, as an adult, one of Kennedy's quotes might apply.
“He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent.”

I'm glad he's my Senator, but, like poster #12- I'm wary of dems turned republican. Not really happy with a couple of his votes, but I don't know the circumstances of those couple of votes.

Apparently it’s not ok to have a differing opinion from a certain poster and I resent being referred to as a ‘you know what’ floating in a punch bowl.. Sorry, but I reserve the right to have my own first hand opinion, having witnessed this guy in action for years and years. He has done some good things for my state, and some not so good. I just don’t like phony. I’m outta here.

#’s 12 and 13, may I remind you that Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump were both once democrats?

#15 I get your point, but with all respect, Louisiana politics have always been a unique blend of corruption and obfuscation. Conservatives here must be very alert to both.

The good Senator sure doesn't beat around the bush. Excellent piece by Surber. Kennedy reminds me of President Reagan. He says what he means and means what he said. Just imagine if we had 99 other Senators who act just like Kennedy.

John Kennedy is a one of a kind politician. People who ignore or dislike him have no “sense of humor”, which includes most democrats. I think he recognizes that political orientation is greatly over rated. It is wonderful that he refers to Socrates, Plato and Aristotle so frequently, as their wisdom was much superior to that commonly seen today. And declining daily, courtesy our present educational “system”.

Not very familiar with Kennedy of Louisiana ...but JFK was front and center in my household because my husband was a democrat through and through...I grieved when John/John saluted his father's passing casket and drove my kids down to Dallas to walk the street that killed my president....never believed the warren commission report and now...finally WE find out it was a fraud....having said all that...JFK was never my choice...but...he was my president...and deserved better...

John Kennedy has a way of skewering liberals with folksy humor that everyone relates to. But don’t be deceived into thinking he’s a bumpkin. He is a highly educated, smart man. Love him.
