Customs officials are seizing eggs at
the U.S.-Mexico border

U.S. customs officials are cracking down on egg smugglers. With egg prices soaring in the U.S. over the last year, more Americans are crossing into Mexico to buy the food item and trying to sneak cartons of raw eggs along some areas of the southern border, including California and Texas. "We are seeing an increase in people attempting to cross eggs from Juarez to El Paso because they are significantly less expensive in Mexico than the U.S.," U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Roger Maier told CBS MoneyWatch. "This is also occurring with added frequency at other Southwest border locations."

Comments:

Eggs are being stopped at the border. Illegal aliens and cartel gang-bangers are welcomed with open arms.

With about 56 million chickens slaughtered due to bird flu, we have a shortage of eggs. A sane political leadership would welcome imports of eggs to help fill in the shortage. But, it is abundantly clear that the Dem pols in charge are NOT sane, NOT reasonable.

Just more indications that our supply shortages are government orchestrated centralized planning for output and supply, 1930s style. Government controlled output, sourcing, demand and pricing. Nothing that resembles freedom, free market economies, or any appreciation of Adam Smith or Hayak or Gilder or Sowell or Reagan or Trump. Too much government at every level but law enforcement and military protection of our borders.

Shoppers across the nation have been scrambling for months to keep up with soaring egg prices. Prices continue to skyrocket – up 60% in December from a year earlier. Last year, the average price for a dozen large Grade A eggs in the U.S. was $1.93 in January. By December, when egg demand peaked, the price surged to $4.25. The high prices prompted a "He went to Kroger" meme, with an egg in place of an engagement ring in the "He went to Jared" jewelry advertisement. Behind the five-decade low US unemployment rate of 3.5% lies a 2.6 million-person mystery. Economist Raj Chetty and his big-data experts at Harvard University’s Opportunity Insights lab went looking for these missing people. San Francisco’s reparations committee has proposed paying each Black longtime resident $5 million and granting total debt forgiveness due to the decades of "systematic repression" faced by the local Black community. The San Francisco African American Reparations Advisory Committee, which advises the city on developing a plan for reparations for Black residents, released its draft report last month to address reparations – not for slavery, since California was not technically a slave state, but "to address the public policies explicitly created to subjugate Black people in San Francisco by upholding and expanding the intent and legacy of chattel slavery."
