GOP leader Kevin McCarthy failed in an 12th attempt for the speakership on Friday but flipped 14 Republican detractors, appearing to confirm that talks between the factions are progressing as was announced earlier in the day. Fourteen Republican hold-outs, including Representatives Brecheen, Bishop, Cloud, Clyde, Donalds, Luna, Miller, Norman, Perry, Roy, Self, Spartz, Gosar, and Ogles voted for McCarthy on the 12th vote for the position. Getting a trusted set of MAGA reps on the rules committee is the equivalent of getting MAGA judges on the SCOTUS bench. They are the gatekeepers that would be needed to enforce the rules concessions that are being negotiated with McCarthy. If they can control the rules committee, McCarthy would not be able to double cross them (without a rules violation). If they could elect a trustworthy Speaker they wouldn't require this committee control, but they don't trust McCarthy.

You guys put a RINO in charge, you're making a big mistake. This reminds me of a Greek tragedy where the protagonist and the audience know disaster is in the offing. The L-Dotter chorus speaks truth and warning, but is ignored.

In my lifetime, there have already been three attempted presidential assassinations, one of them successful. Members need to bear in mind that if during this protracted fight, something were to happen to the president and vice president, as 4th in line of succession Chuck Schumer would be immediately sworn in as the new president. History would forever remember that it could have been Kevin McCarthy.

Actually it would be Patty Murray, Not Chuck Schumer. (admittedly a distinction without much of a difference, although the IQ of Murray is closer to that of the current pResident than Schumer's would be) ........................ Amazing how many people whine about the "Gutless Republicans who refuse to stand up for Conservative Values against the Deep State- Uniparty Establishment RINOs"... Yet when a few brave souls actually do, they are attacked by those same whiners for being" stupid, selfish traitors".

Wake me up when the JAN 6 HEARINGS start again. We have American citizens in solitary confinement for years because they saw an open door to the Capitol and wandered in (to the velvet rope line) out of simple curiosity. Republican Kevin McCarthy has been elected as the new US Speaker after winning the 15th vote following chaotic scenes in Congress. Mr McCarthy's party had taken control of the House – the US lower chamber – following the midterm elections in the autumn, with a slim 222-212 majority. Usually, election of the Speaker follows seamlessly, as a formality, with the leader of the largest party a shoo-in for the job. However, recent splits in the Republican party meant that did not happen until the 15th round of voting. In the 14th ballot, Mr McCarthy received 216 votes - one shy of the number needed for a victory - as a small faction

You remember this one. Last April, Florida put an end to the special status originally granted to Disney World back in 1967. The whole battle began after Disney decided to criticize the “Parental Rights in Education” bill which DeSantis had signed in March. Here’s a bit of background on the deal that was repealed. Since 1967, Disney has received tax and regulation exemptions for an area known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The exemption in effect allows Disney to govern itself on Disney World grounds, including having its own fire department and board of supervisors, as well as its ability to oversee land and environmental regulations.

Lost GDP from the project is also estimated to be between $3.4 billion and $9.6 billion. Even when you only consider the SEIS, which is the government’s environmental impact study, the numbers of jobs and money involved aren’t small potatoes.
