As Buffalo begins to dig itself out from its deadliest disaster in a decade, the plights of people stuck for days in frigid homes without much food, their streets still unplowed, have reignited deep economic and racial fault lines that have long polarized the city. (Snip) As the toll on the city has become clearer, a dozen residents and community leaders said in interviews that structural issues such as poverty, food deserts, poor housing and a lack of investment by government have made the impacts on working-class, Black and Brown neighborhoods much worse. They expressed concerns that surrounding wealthier and

One of the annoying tendencies of our conservative-populist movement is to conflate objective evaluations of individuals in the arena with the approval of those individuals. For years, I have found Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell to be a frustrating and imperious charter member of the GOP establishment while simultaneously being the best parliamentary leader we have had in living memory. He has done important things for the movement. I get a lot of grief for saying, “You must love Mitch!” but that’s fine. We need to be objective instead of emotional – we’re not Democrats. And he was objectively skilled and effective once upon a time.

A child fathered by Hunter Biden may have her last name changed to Biden if a court appeal filed Tuesday by the girl’s Arkansas mother succeeds.
The motion, filed by the attorney for former stripper Lunden Alexis Roberts, was made in the 16th Circuit Court in Independence County in the paternity case against Hunter Biden, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports.
The outlet records the name change submission was one of four filings made in the case originally settled back in March, 2020.
The case was reopened in September when the son of President Joe Biden sought child support payment adjustments due to “substantial material change”

The co-founder of Home Depot slammed 'woke people,' said nobody wants to work anymore and called Joe Biden 'the worst president in history' for putting obstacles in the way of entrepreneurial success.
Bernie Marcus, 93, believes that the success the company he began with Arthur Blank in 1978 couldn't happen today.
He said: 'We would end up with 15, 16 stores. I don’t know that we could go further' because of people standing in the way of the business community.
Marcus added that he's worried about capitalism and said thanks to socialism, 'Nobody works.

Thinking about cutting back on sweets and hitting the gym as your New Year’s resolution? Well, if you are, you might be a white supremacist.
Okay, not really. Not at all, actually, but according to Natalia Mehlman Petrzela, the author of the book Fit Nation: The Gains and Pains of America’s Exercise Obsession, which comes out next month, American exercise trends reinforce white supremacy.
Petrzela explains this ridiculousness in an interview with Time Magazine. When asked what the most surprising thing she learned from her research was, she explained that she originally believed concern for fitness was “progressive.” “It was super interesting reading the reflections of fitness enthusiasts

Remember this story the next time your progressive, blue-haired brother-in-law calls you a “racist” for wanting the southern border closed.
WARNING: This story is graphic.
Illegal immigrant Luis Saavedra Villa, a 44-year-old registered sex offender with a history of previous deportations, snuck back into our country and raped an 8-year-old girl in Wyoming.
Villa kidnapped the young girl and brought her to McDonald’s in his truck while her mother was working. He is a known family acquaintance. After their meal, Villa locked the doors of his truck so his young victim couldn’t escape and violently raped the girl. He then forced her to clean her own blood from his truck.

A health expert has sharply criticized the Chinese regime’s lifting of international travel restrictions in the midst of a massive COVID wave sweeping through the country, saying the move is “extremely irresponsible” and could cause a global resurgence of the pandemic.
The National Health Commission announced on Dec. 26 that the country would end all quarantine requirements for inbound travelers from Jan. 8, 2023. Travelers will need to obtain a negative PCR test within 48 hours of departure, it said. Currently, travelers entering China need to undergo five days of mandatory quarantine in an approved facility, followed by three days at home.

On Friday afternoon, Abdul Sharifu left his house in Buffalo, N.Y., to go to the market to buy milk for his two young children. He hadn’t gotten far when his car got stuck in one of the deadliest blizzards in the history of the city.
Mr. Sharifu, a 26-year-old refugee from Congo, sat in his Toyota RAV4 with a dwindling supply of gas in his tank and called a friend to explain his plight, said Erieckson Kiza, a leader in the Congolese community. Mr. Sharifu, clad only in a thin tracksuit,

The White House will fly the federal budget to St Croix for President Joe Biden to sign into law ahead of the December 30 deadline, so the government doesn't shut down over New Year's Eve.
The 4,000-page, $1.7 trillion omnibus package to fund the government through September 2023 arrived at the White House on Wednesday evening, after it completed the legislative enrollment process.
It now needs to make its way to St Croix, where Biden is spending the holiday week in a luxury villa owned by a billionaire Democratic donor.

I said it years ago, and it still stands true: the NFL is a modern-day Rome with no end in sight.
On Christmas Day, the most-viewed NFL game of the day was the contest between the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers, pulling in 25.92 million viewers, according to NFL analyst Ari Meirov. In comparison to the NBA’s highest-viewed game, which was between the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, it was a blowout with basketball only pulling in a little over six million viewers.

Santa Monica is one of my old stomping grounds from my years in Los Angeles.
So when I heard the place was becoming unliveable
According to Jim Thompson, writing at RedState:
So what is it like in Santa Monica now? It depends on who you ask. If you ask Los Angeles Times reporters reviewing statistics, Santa Monica is a relative garden of Eden. {snip]
There is a group of Santa Monica businesses and residents who [snip] put up a sign that says:
Santa Monica IS NOT safe,” it reads, above a second sign with the words “Crime … depravity … outdoor mental asylum.”
