The recent Red scare by the left in declaring that slavery is legal in five of the united States needs some cautious reflection and analysis on the one question it raises. Allegedly, the landmark 13th amendment to the Constituition, which was ratified on Dec 16, 1865, saw the official abolishment of slavery. It is said, however, that it was allowed in prison as punishment against convicted felons.

I would think spending the day in a 6 by 6 cell would be a lot worse punishment than getting out to do anything else.

Calling working to earn one’s own keep slavery is a reach that only a flaming woke lib or a radialist scab picker could manage.

There is a constitutional amendment adjustment on the Tennessee ballot:
Slavery and involuntary servitude are forever prohibited. Nothing in this section shall prohibit an inmate from working when the inmate has been duly convicted of a crime.

Wonder if the road gang in Cool Hand Luke were paid? Minimum wage doesn't apply to prisoners. A typical salary is 17 cents per hour.

Convicts should not only earn their keep, they should pay compensation for damages to their victims.

Those of us who obey the law and are not in prison have to earn our keep.

Let's go one better. How about the convict's family be tasked with making sure they survive in prison. Having spent a lot of time outside the U.S. and in countries where you didn't want to screw-up, this is how they handled prisoners. If their family didn't get money or food to them, well, sorry 'bout that.

On the little island of St. Kitts convicts had to grow their own food, otherwise they did not eat.

Everyone Else has to work to earn their keep, put food on the Table, why shouldn't the Prisoners! Of course they should WORK and they should learn a Trade so they can support themselves IF they get out of Prison. If their new Trade is Washing Dishes, so be it! And Somebody has to was the Laundry! Where do the Libs come up with this drivel?

Yes, criminals should earn their keep. They are the ones who are supposed to be paying a debt to society. Instead society pay$ their debt for them. They get three hots, a cot, watch leftist TV, and they get to work out so they're strong enough to do more crime when they're released. Insane.

FTA: "The morally salient factor here is that no person shall be absolved of the requirement to be financially responsible for his life—even if he is incarcerated."
Okay, then that same rationalization demands the complete dismantling of welfare programs, including the disabled and others physically or mentally incapable of earning. Let's see some politicians toss grandma out of her housing.
BTW: Prisoners in many areas still work, from picking up litter to pounding out license plates at 35 cents an hour.

I believe this makes sense in this day and time. In addition, take away the weights and other equipment which prisoners use to become herculean criminals to prey on society when they get out
