While we should never count our chickens until they are fully out of their shells, there is almost unanimous agreement among the major polling groups that the GOP should be able to retake the majority in the House next month. (Insert the standard caveat about how bad the polling has been of late here.) If that happens, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy still appears to be the odds-on favorite to be the next Speaker, though that assumption also comes with a few caveats. Some of the GOP members in the lower chamber have clearly been feeling their oats and have been starting to suggest that Joe Biden might be impeached

Former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean claimed Thursday on MSNBC’s “The Beat” that the Democrats will increase their majorities in both the U.S Senate and House in November’s midterm election.
Dean said, “I’ll make this prediction right now we’ll pick up two to three in the Senate and pick up House. We will pick up seats in the House and not lose them. I think we will take two more than we have today n the House. It’s just because when you see these early turnout figures, and you better be one of them if you’re watching this, that is a very good thing for people who are angry,

Justice Amy Coney Barrett on Thursday rejected an emergency request by a group of Wisconsin taxpayers to block the enforcement of President Biden’s student-loan forgiveness plan.
Barrett, who typically fields emergency bids from Wisconsin, acted alone without referring the case to the rest of the Supreme Court bench or seeking a response from the government.
On Wednesday, the plaintiffs challenging Biden’s student-debt wipeout, which would effectively erase up to $10,000 in loans for graduates who earn less than $125,000 a year, filed an emergency petition to stop the government from implementing the plan pending litigation in the lower courts.

Elon Musk could be set to slash Twitter’s headcount drastically once his $44 billion deal for the social network goes through.
The mega-billionaire has told potential investors in the Twitter deal that he plans to lay off almost 75% the company’s staff, or about 5,500 employees, to reduce the size of its workforce from 7,500 to just over 2,000, the Washington Post reported, citing anonymous sources and documents. Reps for Twitter and Musk did not respond to requests for comment.
On Tesla’s third-quarter 2022 earnings call Wednesday, Musk said he was paying too much for Twitter. Earlier this month he agreed to go forward with his original $54.20/share offer

The modern Republican Party's one non-negotiable value is this: the ruthless pursuit of power. Party leaders who recognize this prosper while those who hold principle over political advancement get swept away.
The latest Republican rising star to learn this lesson is Glenn Youngkin.
A year ago, pundits were praising Virginia's governor for finding a way to win a blue state while keeping ex-President Donald Trump at arm's length and for creating a Republican campaign blueprint not based on outright election denialism. Yet on Wednesday, Youngkin had an arm around Kari Lake, the new GOP sensation and ultra-MAGA

The Department of Defense announced Thursday that it will subsidize the transportation expenses for female soldiers and their dependents to receive abortions.
It will allocate money for “travel and transportation allowances for Service members and their dependents, as appropriate and consistent with applicable federal law and operational requirements, and as necessary amend any applicable travel regulations, to facilitate official travel to access non covered reproductive health care that is unavailable within the local area of a Service member’s permanent duty station,” a Pentagon memo obtained by the Daily Signal reads.
The document reportedly said the department would financially assist

America’s top aerospace engineers and scientists are joining forces to protect us from UFOs.
The country’s largest organization of government and private sector technical experts is launching a project to study “unidentified aerial phenomena,” after concluding that recent incursions by mysterious craft pose a safety hazard to military and commercial aircraft, according to people involved in the effort. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which includes among its members the country’s largest defense and NASA contractors, has established three committees to study the technology, how incursions affect pilot and passenger safety, and to coordinate with government agencies and international researchers

The third-quarter CNBC All-America Economic Survey finds some modest improvements in economic attitudes and in President Joe Biden’s approval ratings across the country, but Americans still harbor mostly negative views on the economy and give the GOP double-digit leads on key economic and financial issues ahead of the November elections.
Biden’s overall approval rating improved 10 points from the July survey with 46% approving and 50% disapproving. Approval of Biden’s handling of the economy also rose 10 points, with 40% approving and 56% disapproving. While they were the president’s best numbers since 2021, the improvement came largely from increased Democratic support. Approval by independents

Michael Steele, tell us what you really think.
Steele, Chair of the Republican National Committee from 2009 to 2011 has made no secret of his disdain for Donald Trump and anybody who supports him, has become increasingly strident in his condemnations of Republicans.
Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele warned his party against legitimizing some Trump-aligned figures as political leaders, calling them “fleas” and “blood-sucking ticks” whom potential House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., would have to “lay down with.”

President Biden revealed in a recent interview that he supports the establishment of a federal fund to cover costs associated with abortion, including time off work, travel, and childcare.
Biden expressed support for the radical idea for the first time during a roundtable panel discussion with NowThis that was recorded on Tuesday and is slated to air over the weekend. The answer was delivered in response to a question from 26-year-old medical student, Danielle Mathisen, who pointed to growing commitments across the corporate world to support women procuring abortions and suggested the federal government should follow suit.

Utah voters who tuned into Monday night’s Senate debate were treated to something relatively rare in the 2022 election: a candidate putting Jan. 6, 2021, front and center in his closing argument. Independent Evan McMullin seized upon texts Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) sent to the White House indicating a willingness to help President Donald Trump contest the 2020 election results, saying Lee “betrayed your oath to the Constitution.” Despite the well-publicized Jan. 6 hearings, including the likely final one, held last week, the insurrection has not been an overarching focus of Democrats’ 2022 campaign messaging. Politico reported last week that Jan. 6 has featured in less than 2 percent

A poll released Wednesday by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Georgia News Collaborative is good news for both the U.S. Senate candidate, Republican Herschel Walker, and the gubernatorial candidate, Republican incumbent Governor Brian Kemp. Hispanic voters favor Walker over Democrat incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock 47-41. Hispanic voters favor Democrat Stacey Abrams over Kemp by only one point. That total is Abrams 49 – Kemp 48.
In the Senate race, 11% of Hispanic voters indicate they’ll back Libertarian Chase Oliver. The poll’s margin of error of 5.6 percentage points. Both Republican and Democrat Parties are devoting more resources to Hispanic voters, a small but growing bloc of voters.
