Today is the anniversary of the birth of John Lennon. Murdered at the age of 40, he should be here to celebrate his 82nd birthday today. What a loss.
His work has always struck a chord with me. Now that so much of the Beatles’ work is available on YouTube, I thought I would take the occasion to adapt comments I have made previously and note some of his less famous songs. I am a Lennonist at heart; I identify with his idealistic streak and his cynicism. In the jaunty rockabilly number “I’ll Cry Instead” he let on, “I’ve got a chip on my shoulder that’s bigger than my feet."

Lennon was a violent wife beater who put 2 wives in the hospital. Went out after concerts to "roll Qu##rs" just for fun. He beat his road manager to the ground and kicked him until his spleen burst and he died.

It’s really nice to have a break from politics. Of course Lennon had a brand of politics that was quite present in his life but now in the distant past.
I had a similar experience to the original poster except i replaced Brahms with The Beatles.
No doubt Lennon had a long way to go as a human being. Who knows where his talent came from; if you were to spend a lifetime trying to attain to it the mystery would deepen.

Lennon was a Leninist as well and his anthem was the song Imagine. A Godless antidemocratic Marxist piece of garbage that pretty much defines John Lennon. The song gives Globalists orgasms.

How do you explain the lyrics to "Revolution?"
Alice Cooper's "School's Out." Same deal. Same hilarious misinterpretation by young liberal morons of the 60's/early-70's.

Was 10 when the Beatles first appeared on Ed Sullivan, and I was smitten, as was every other young female at the time. I have every album (on CD) that they ever made, and can still sing every lyric. Even now, when I hear one of their songs, I am transported to a simpler time. I watched Peter Jackson’s 4-part documentary on The Beatles. It was interesting to watch them all in their creative mode, and to experience John & Paula’s magic. It just flowed out of them. Paul was the task master; John was the clown; George was brooding and brilliant; and Ringo was…well, just Ringo. (Unfortunately, Yoko was present at the recording sessions, as well.) There is an interesting movie about John’s life that is called Nowhere Boy. I was never a big fan of their individual music, but as a group, no one could touch them. There will always be wonderful bands but there will never be another Beatles.

The FBI investigated Lennon in 1972. There was a rumor that he was planning some disruption to the Republican convention in Miami. They reported back to J. Edgar that Lennon was so stoned most of the time that he couldn’t have organized a luncheon, much less a revolution.
Lennon was way overrated.

Lennon's death was sad. But, a real tragedy was the death's of Buddy Holly @ 22 & Elvis @ 42. A real loss to the music world.

Well, where he probably is NOW - he's more popular than Jesus Christ.

I was 11 when the Beatles first played on the Ed Sullivan show. I always thought that John was creepy.

I feel we shouldn't burst the OP's bubble. Obviously, Lennon inspired him, as he did tens of millions around world. I, too, loved the Beatles, especially Paul, George, and Ringo. Lennon did many good songs, but it's hard to overcome the worst song ever written: "Imagine."

For the Beatles fans--and there are a few--around here. This is a nice collection of John Lennon's significant songs. Today John would have been 82. I was a classically trained pianist from the age of 5, and loved the music I learned then. It will be with me always. The 3 B's were Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven. Can't go wrong with that. But I also loved the popular music of my childhood, and the Beatles were a major part of that. Musically, the Beatles were sui generis. Their music will last forever. It was nice to hear it when it was new.
