Civilization is fragile. It hinges on ensuring the stuff of life.
To be able to eat, to move about, to have shelter, to be free from state or tribal coercion, to be secure abroad and safe at home—only that allows cultures to be freed from the daily drudgery of mere survival.
Civilization alone permits humans to pursue sophisticated scientific research, the arts, and the finer aspects of culture.
So, the great achievement of Western civilization—consensual government, individual freedom, rationalism in partnership with religious belief, free market economics, and constant self-critique and audit—was to liberate people from daily worry over state violence, random crime, famine, and an often unforgiving nature.
But so often the resulting

VDH does an amazing job of putting things in perspective. Americans must put forth effort to maintain the way of life they have. Instead they put their efforts into trying to create a utopia where everyone enjoys the same outcome regardless of effort, talent, perseverance or willingness to take risk.
America is heading for a rendezvous with reality and reality always wins.

Fine encapsulation of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The only thing missing is how the exploitation of minerals, especially hydrocarbons, expedited the acquisition of basic needs, allowing Western society to pursue higher level needs, until the Biden Administration began purposefully tearing it all down. Civilization disappears 1000 X faster than it materializes. Keeping civilization is the most worthy cause for which to fight and risk one's life. Without it you can die from taking a drink of bad water, among other risks that were essentially eliminated by the spread of civilization.

I spent my childhood on a bicycle with my friends, roaming the summertime streets of a small town in the middle of an American Eden. I had no way of knowing it was a just brief, beautiful dream. Winter is coming.

When I read this, I think those guys that live off the grid got it right; they’re not just survivalist nuts. I’m glad I’m old with two cancer operations and a heart condition.
The higher the culture, the greater the fall.

Read the last sentence of the article, folks.
FTA - "When stripped away, we’re relearning that what lies just beneath is utterly terrifying."
We want this for America? Are we SURE we want this - socialism/communism where you will own nothing and be happy as hell while eating insects to stay alive? Yes, I get it. Most of you have jobs and kids to handle and don't have time to worry about politics. Exactly what the left wants.
But what about America, as founded, folks?

Many of us remember the days of our youth when our Mom's said to us when we headed out for the day, not even asking where we were going..."Just make sure to be home when the street lights go on."
The way things are going there may not be any street lights going on for kids to come home by if they're allowed to leave the house at all.
Sadly, the veneer gets thinner by the day.

FTA: "We talk grandly about the globalized Great Reset. We blindly accept the faddish Green New Deal. We virtue signal about defunding the police. We merely shrug at open borders. And we brag about banning fertilizers and pesticides, outlawing the internal combustion engine, and discounting Armageddon in the nuclear age—as if on autopilot we have already reached utopia. But meanwhile, Westerners are systematically destroying the very elements of our civilization that permitted such fantasies in the first place."
I must quibble with VDH's use of the word "we" in this paragraph, unless he is referring to the royal "we" of our corrupt "betters" who have cheated and schemed themselves into elected offices and places of power. Since this "climate change" madness began in the 1970's there has been consistent pushback by real scientists and a majority of the public, but all have been drowned out by Fake News, The Science!, and Global Cooling/Warming scam artists immune from public criticism. They have been aided and abetted by the entertainment industry pumping out TV shows, movies and music that supports the same themes and messages. Truth has been fighting phantoms, shape shifters and ghosts. I am not guilty of any of the crimes listed in the quoted paragraph, nor my fellow Americans, nor most of the people of Europe, nor the rest of the world who will suffer this winter.
Last night I watch a program about the English Peasant's Revolt of 1381. It was an inspiration. People can only be pushed so far. Up the rebels!

The sadness that troubles me is that many Americans won’t remember those halcyon days or won’t ever have a memory of them. Those were the days when children were safe in their neighborhoods and cities. Now you can’t take your eyes off your children in public for a moment. Even my children worry about the future of their children and potential grandchildren.
What this administration and its supporters have done to this nation in less than two short years is unthinkable. I knew it would be bad, but I honestly never thought I would see the breakdown of society like it is now. The lawlessness and cultural issues that have been shoved down our throats I could not have imagined a few years ago. We have one recourse. November 8th must be the day a second shot is heard around the world or we are finished.

Re #8, out neighborhood was far out in the woods, didn't initially have street lights. We had to "be home before dark". We roamed miles on our bikes, and I dug oysters, my brother and I caught blue crabs for dinner many times in our small arm off of the Chesapeake Bay. We built forts, and went to "the haunted house" and generally had a LOT of fun.
And as far as being terrified of what is below the veneer.....I have had police officers as personal friends for 35-40 years and have heard a LOT of stories from them about how they get to see below the veneer far more often than most people do. And I've done a couple of ride-alongs. Until you have gone into a slum tenement, climbed to the 7th floor, at night, hearing a bunch of people screaming at each other, and then arriving, the officers find two bloody people, and "nobody wants to talk to them about anything". Domestic disturbances show a lot about 'below the veneer'.
This is one reason that I spent 30 years training and competing with a handgun, shotgun and rifle. Both for fun and to develop skills that may one day prove to be literally life-saving. So far, so good. But, who knows, the way they are going.

How can we not give the MSM a standing ovation for their dogged determination in destroying this country with their constant LIES? I can only pray that the destruction bites them in the ass 100%. They truly disgust me.

FTA: "As we suffer self-inflicted mass looting, random street violence, hyperinflation, a nonexistent border, unaffordable fuel, and a collapsing military, Americans will come to appreciate just how thin is the veneer of their civilization."
No they won't. We all know this cannot happen here, right? Remember the fear of "Killer Bees" spreading across the USA years ago. (I think that was "settled science" in its day.) Well, now we have the killer open borders invasion and the killer urban centers...and both these are as much celebrated as feared. The propaganda is that if he only "lift" these people the issues will disappear. Just a few more social workers, compassionate bankers and other investors will create prosperity for all. And if we show some compassion to the oppressed coming across the border from around the globe...there is nothing to fear, and only future wonder at the fruits of "diversity" these wonderful people represent. Really, they're just like you and I. Let these good times ROLL!

The Democrat Party destroyed our economy and is now after Western Civilization. Standard gasoline at $6.999 today in West Los Angeles. At least the illegal aliens get to pay foe something as they are otherwise tax-exempt. And all this because we let Democrats steal the election from Donald Trump.
