Wegmans, the well-known supermarket chain, has decided to put an end to its self-checkout app Wegmans SCAN. The grocery chain discontinued the app on Sunday, Sept. 18. Customers were able to scan, bag and pay for groceries through the app to skip checkout lines altogether. “Unfortunately, the losses we are experiencing prevent us from continuing to make it available in its current state,” the company wrote in a statement. “We’ve made the decision to turn off the app until we can make improvements that will meet the needs of our customers and business.” The app was introduced in 2019. Wegmans currently operates nine locations throughout New Jersey and
Wegmans tried. The chain had a lot more faith in fellow man than I do. Too many people out there are selfish, self-absorbed, disrespectful, not civic-mined, and DISHONEST.

Government Pavlov has trained the dogs well. Opportunities requiring our better angels is a clamoring bell to the rampant demons who will not allow it.

"Customers were able to scan, bag and pay for groceries through the app to skip checkout lines altogether." You didn't skip checkout lines altogether. You just scanned items as you put them in the basket, like hand-held scanners elsewhere. Then you scanned the total just once, rather than one item at a time at the checkout. Opportunity to cheat? Absolutely, but so it is with the handheld scanner at Giant. I wonder if, perhaps, it just depends on the store's location?

In nearby Pasadena, Amazon has just finished the major conversion of a large former hardware store building into their new Amazon Fresh, which I believe has a similar concept. I won’t be shopping there.

We have been going through a moral collapse in this country for at least the last 60 years. Look around and you can see all the signs.....kleptocrat politicians, church attendance declining, murder, robbery, looting and millions of people who think that they are entitled to other people’s property.

Not a subscription site for me either; I'd not have posted it if it was.

Our constitution and laws were dependent on a God fearing people with a conscience. Most people have lost one or both of those tenets. Until we reclaim one or both of these important traits we are doomed to fall further into chaos.

Great news, never use self-checkout as it just beats someone out of a job that is badly needed.

I use cash at the grocery store so I don't use such gizmos.
(What I buy is MY business.)

I enjoyed the 'scan and go' at Kroger for two years. Then some rent a cop started following me around waiting for me to make a mistake. I stopped using it and make sure I go to his register every time I shop. I ask him to take his time. Can't be too careful. Seriously, alarms go off if an item isn't scanned properly. I watched someone leave the store with a cart full of stolen laundry detergent. Security did nothing.

I've been told the same thing is happening at my local Kroger's.

I do not use self checkout. By the time I walk around a warehouse store, I don't have the strength left to do the checkout. They could put some chairs at the checkout line, and I would be pleased.

The only self checkout that I use is in Costco, and only because they have people doing the scanning so you aren't really checking yourself out. I don't bother with them otherwise.

Unless the store gives ME a big discount for ''working there'' I don't do my own checking out. I don't work there, someone else does though so let THEM check my stuff out and I'll just stand there.

Couple of things: its hard to get away from the low lifes. and its probably not a good idea to put this system in any town with a MLK Way.

With "no bail" laws infecting the country, shoplifting is to be expected.

I use the self checkout at Sam's Club. The lines are shorter. I still have to show receipt at the end though.

Dump the self service and bring back cashier lines only. I rarely use self service in any store.

I loved the Scan-and-Go at Krogers - but it was discontinued 6 months ago. I could scan things and place them carefully into several boxes, packed neatly and in a protected manner. Didn't use any plastic trash bags for carrying groceries. Two less people touching my stuff. Discontinued because of theft, and this is not an inner-city area.
