“But that’s not what’s worrying me. It’s how to do it. These things must be done delicately… …or you hurt the spell.”
—Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz
The bad witch has a point. An incumbent president’s own party dumping him without taking the party to rack and ruin would be unprecedented and would require an extraordinarily light touch. It goes without saying that it has to look like leaving was the president’s idea or else his partisans — and Biden has more than a few — would scream bloody murder and rip the party to shreds.
Yet there is a consensus

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) bragged about her efforts to block legislation that would increase security for Supreme Court justices shortly after authorities foiled an alleged assassination attempt against Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Ocasio-Cortez posted a video to her Instagram Stories on Thursday in which she claims to walk to the floor of the House of Representatives to object to unanimous consent for legislation, Newsweek reported.
The progressive “Squad” member said in the video that Thursday was a “fly out day” when many members of Congress left Washington, D.C., for their home districts.

Sullivan’s latest piece on Substack is titled “The Vibes They Are A-Shiftin'” and that actually undersells the case he makes that the woke left (or whatever you prefer to call them) appear to be in retreat. He opens by noting that it was only 2 years ago that the world was figuratively and sometimes literally on fire. Activists were demanding police be defunded and Ibram Kendi and Robin DiAngelo were seemingly anointed as our foremost public intellectuals. Jump forward two years and things look very different.
Last year, Eric Adams became mayor of New York City, propelled by minority voters horrified by surging crime and chaos. This past week,

The numbers are in for the Jan. 6 Committee production. If we looked at how people were tuning out, it stood to reason it wasn’t going to go well. As anticipated, it didn’t. So to translate that into something that helps you understand how much it bombed, here’s The Hill’s media guy, Joe Concha noting that this is significantly smaller than the regular newscasts that they run that don’t have the advantage of running in primetime. “Context: The evening newscasts on CBS, NBC & ABC average anywhere from 18 to 20 million viewers combined on a typical night,” Concha explained. “Those newscasts do not air in primetime.

Would-be assassin Nicholas Roske failed to carry out his mission of assassinating Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. This isn’t surprising: the sort of person who acts on incitement from the likes of Chuck Schumer is more or less deranged, and more or less incompetent. Yet there are more where Roske came from, and one of them may succeed.
What do the Democrats think about attempted assassinations of Supreme Court justices? To my knowledge, neither Schumer nor Joe Biden’s handlers have commented. I surmise that the Democrats are hoping for one or more assassinations to take place before Biden is hustled out of the White House, so that his handlers can appoint

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) went up by 8.6 percent in May, the highest year-over-year increase since December 1981, the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed on Friday.
The increase was higher than the 8.3 percent increase projected by economists. Core CPI, excluding volatile energy and food prices, increased by six percent year-over-year.
The CPI increased by 1 percent in May alone, with core CPI rising 0.6 percent over the same period.
Price increases were recorded in “shelter, gasoline, and food,” the BLS said. Gas prices hit a new record on Friday with the national average reaching $4.986 per gallon, according to AAA.

If the Democrats thought that the reaction to the Jan. 6 Committee was going to be riveting, the reaction so far from a variety of quarters says not so much.
CNN’s Chris Wallace expressed skepticism that the Committee was going to produce anything of worth.
“I’m kind of skeptical about what we’re going to see tonight and over the next couple of weeks,” Wallace said on CNN minutes before the hearing was set to begin.
Wallace said the committee had put itself in danger of falling victim to too much “hype” about its findings and “over-selling” what they have to tell the American people about the attack.

Yesterday we learned that the suspect in the attempted murder of Justice Kavanaugh showed up at his home with bags containing a gun, a knife, pepper spray, zip ties and tools to break into his house. He told investigators he wanted to give his life purpose by killing Kavanaugh (before killing himself). Today, media outlets have gotten hold of the two 911 calls that Roske made shortly after he arrived. He made two calls. The first one was about a minute and ended when he couldn’t tell the dispatcher exactly where he was located. But he called back a moment later, gave an address and spoke

Joe Biden and the Democrats don’t want to have to talk about policies or any of the real issues afflicting the country right now. Because if they did, the focus would be on all their failures. That’s why they want the focus now to be on the Jan. 6 Committee and the show trial that they want to sell you.
Not only is it a show trial, it even has a producer, as my colleague Jeff Charles reported, like any TV drama — according to Axios, “James Goldston — former president of ABC News, and a documentary storyteller who ran ‘Good Morning America’ and ‘Nightline’ —

CEOs Chip Bergh from Levi Strauss (pictured, left), Lauren Hobart from Dick’s Sporting Goods (pictured, right), and 248 other company heads are sending a letter to the Senate on Thursday asking for more gun control.
Axios acquired a copy of the letter, which replicates a letter that was originally sent to Congress in 2019. There are some revisions to the message and an increased number of signatories.
The push to re-send the letter is the result of a partnership between Levi’s and Mike Bloomberg-affiliated Everytown for Gun Safety.
In the letter, CEOs describe gun violence as a “public health crisis,” noting economic impact of gun crime and the human cost of gun crime.

Joe Biden was speaking at the Summit of the Americas on Thursday.
As we’ve already noted, it hasn’t been going well. Biden stumbled up the stairs as he was boarding Air Force One for Los Angeles. Then, Biden was met by a protester rushing the motorcade who had to be subdued. Meanwhile, a lot of the countries didn’t show up because of the poor way that the Biden team dealt with the event. While objecting to the human rights violations of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela is a good thing and we should encourage that, how weak is it if

Disney has ousted a top executive who slammed Florida’s anti-grooming, Parental Rights in Education law as “a violation of fundamental human rights.”
Peter Rice was fired from his post as Chairman of Walt Disney Television and Co-Chair, Disney Media Networks, and will replace him with Dana Walden, Chairman of Entertainment, Walt Disney Television, according to a report by Deadline.
Rice, who spoke out against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R)’s Parental Rights in Education law, joined Disney in 2019, after the company acquired 21st Century Fox.
In March, Rice told The Hollywood Reporter that he viewed the anti-grooming legislation in Florida as “a violation of fundamental human rights.”
