Minnesota 5th District Congresswoman Ilhan Omar took a lot of criticism from both Republicans and Democrats for her vote against a Russian oil ban last month. It passed overwhelmingly in the House by a vote of 414 to 17, with just Rep. Omar, one other Democrat, and 15 Republicans voting against it. “I don’t think it’s actually that controversial,” Omar said.. (snip) Omar is also authoring a bill in Congress to restrict the use of “no-knock” warrants.

A young man is charged with riding a motorcycle through a deployed school bus stop arm and hitting a student as he crossed the road the road in Edina. Prosecutors say 18-year-old Terrence Mather-Lymon of Minneapolis was riding a motorcycle for the first time on April 11 when he passed a number of stopped vehicles and the bus, with stop arm extended and lights flashing, before hitting the 10-year-old in a marked crosswalk. (snip) He told them it was the first time he had ever ridden a motorcycle and did not have a license. .

A federal judge rejected Girl Scouts’ claims Thursday that the Boy Scouts created marketplace confusion and damaged their recruitment efforts by using words like “scouts” and “scouting” in recruitment drives. Manhattan Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein ruled the Boy Scouts of America can describe their activities as “scouting” without referring to gender and that the matter does not need to be put to a jury. (snip) In a statement, the Boy Scouts said the ruling had vindicated its position. It noted that 305,000 girls are currently enrolled in its programs and that since full participation was permitted beginning in 2019, more than 2,200 females have become Eagle Scouts.

Bobby Rydell, the 1960s teen heartthrob who appeared in the 1963 musical comedy “Bye Bye Birdie,” has died. He was 79. According to Variety, the cause of death was pneumonia. He passed just weeks before he would have turned 80 on April 26. The triple-threat from Philadelphia, born Robert Louis Ridarelli, was famous for such hip-swinging rock & roll hits as “Volare” and “Wild One,” and acted alongside Ann-Margret, Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh in the Oscar-nominated “Bye Bye Birdie.”

Minneapolis man is accused of kidnapping and robbing a man, then lighting his unconscious accomplice on fire earlier this month. Desmond Durelle Graham, 31, is charged with kidnapping, first-degree aggravated robbery, third-degree assault and financial transaction fraud. Minneapolis police were called to the area of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue (snip) the suspects drove around Minneapolis using narcotics, until one of Graham’s accomplices became unconscious. Graham allegedly tried to beat the accomplice awake in the vehicle, but after that didn’t work, went back to the abandoned gas station and lit the accomplice on fire.

A South Carolina mother had both arms amputated and her colon removed after she was mauled by two pit bulls and a mixed breed dog earlier this week. Kyleen Waltman, 38, was savagely attacked by the pit bulls while she was out on a walk Monday morning, WYFF reported. (snip) A good Samaritan saw Waltman being mauled by the dogs and was able to scare the animals off by firing his gun into the air.

More than 20 crime victims from across the city urged Frey to show his support for police, evaluate his messaging, and declare the crime crisis a public safety emergency. (snip) More than 20 of the group’s members who are crime victims themselves spoke with Mayor Frey on Thursday afternoon at City Hall. A Wisconsin judge has ordered Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos to produce deleted emails in response to an open records request filed by a liberal watchdog group seeking documents related to an investigation into the 2020 election. Dane County Circuit Judge Valerie Bailey-Rihn on Thursday also ordered Vos to search his private email accounts and text messages for any relevant deleted messages. A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with a shooting at a busy mall in South Carolina's capital city that left 14 people injured. Jewayne M. Price, 22, was arrested early Sunday and is expected to be charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol. He was initially detained as one of three people initially identified as persons of interest in Saturday's shooting at Columbiana Centre. No fatalities have been reported. But nine people were shot and five people suffered injuries, including broken bones lacerations and a head injury, while attempting to flee the mall for safety. The victims ranged in age from 15 to 73.

On February 14, 2018, thanks to a complete systemic failure at the school and county level, Nikolas Cruz was able to murder 17 of his classmates at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. David Hogg, a student at the school, was not among the injured nor was he even in the line of fire (which is, of course, a good thing). Nevertheless, by becoming one of the loudest voices calling for gun control following the shootings, Hogg managed to get a place at Harvard. Chicago - The State of Illinois has launched a new program that will provide free health care to undocumented immigrant adults ages 55 to 64. The free health care program was approved by lawmakers in Spring 2021. It is an expansion of Illinois' program to provide health benefits for immigrant seniors. Covered services include doctor and hospital visits, lab tests, physical and occupational therapy, mental health, substance abuse disorder services, dental and vision services, and prescription drugs.(snip)The free health care will expand even further on July 1 to cover eligible adults ages 42 to 54.

Protests kicked off in Grands Rapids, Michigan, after the Grand Rapids Police Department released a video of an officer shooting a 26-year-old Black man in the head–the officer has not been charged. The city of Grand Rapids held a press conference Wednesday to release about 20 minutes of footage showing the killing of Patrick Lyoya on April 4. Grand Police Chief Eric Winstrom was joined by city officials to release a series of videos that all revealed different angles of the incident recorded by the unidentified officer’s dashcam, his bodycam, a cellphone, and a neighbor’s home security camera.

Thank God for fact-checkers. Where would we be without them? Instead of believing the evidence provided by our own two eyes, we’re assured that what we see isn’t really what we thought we saw. Except when it is. But that’s another story. Last Thursday, Joe Biden spoke to students and faculty at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. It was boilerplate political stuff — blaming the supply chain problems on COVID-19, increased fuel prices on the Russians, and inflation wasn’t his fault. At the end of the speech, Biden’s eyes became a little glassy and he turned around slowly and extended his hand. Except there was no one there.
