A mail carrier in Sacramento has been accused of fowl play after going postal on a wild turkey.
The bird apparently accosted the letter carrier Monday, prompting him to grab a pole or stick from his vehicle and fatally beat the animal with it, the Sacramento Bee reports, citing eyewitness accounts on social media app Nextdoor.
The incident has prompted a probe by California wildlife officials and the US Postal Service.
“We are currently launching a thorough investigation,” Meiko Patton, a local USPS spokesperson told the outlet. “Our employees have had several altercations with aggressive turkeys in the area, including a recent attack on a letter carrier.”

They can be scared away with those air horn canisters. Most birds hate loud noises.

A tom can get very aggressive this time of year and they have spurs that can get you with. Good thing to remind them who is at the top of the food chain.

We had a couple of the big bronze turkeys that we allowed to roam the yard and they were incredibly protective. Wouldn't allow people out of cars and chased animals that they thought didn't belong (raccoons, etc).

Its mating season and those Toms get extremely territorial. And they can be incredibly aggresive. I have had them charge my truck and not let me out of my own driveway. They have attacked mail carriers and a couple years back a south shore (Boston area) video went viral of an irritated Tom attacking a police cruiser, after chasing the officers off. They were investigating reports of a Turkey that had attacked and injured a Postal carrier.

They can have large spurs and in springtime, can be pretty aggressive, but it would seem that the mailman is a bit overwrought.

Speaking as a Californian, there are a LOT of aggressive turkeys in Sacramento!
(and most of them don't have feathers).

When there's nothing else to do. I guess had he hit it with his postal vehicle, it would be classified as roadkill and everyone would shrug and go on with life. But no, they are going to go after this person. Sheesh.

I suggest the carcass be brined for 24 hours then buttered salted and peppered and roasted at 350 degrees until golden brown and cooked through. Then consumed in respect for the brave fowl.

Canada can also get extremely aggressive especially if they have young hatchlings. They will charge you if you even look at their babies. One of my grandkids got a lesson from one at my lake cabin.

What’s is that mail person supposed to do, simply stand there and be attacked and be injured by an aggressive Turkey?

Flocks of them up here in the Oakland hills....when I encounter them in the middle of the road, standing on the horn is about the only solution if you want to get anywhere. I wouldn't ever get out of the Jeep. Some of them brazenly hang out on neighborhood porches....I give those a very wide berth when out on my walks!

The job of a postal worker is annoying enough. Let the poor worker be. I'm always perplexed when people want to go out of their way to protect lower-tier animals like coyotes, turkeys, rats, mice. What comes next? Today the turkeys, tomorrow the insects?

The Turkey was obviously a Democrap named Karen...No charges, she was Crazy and attacked the postal worker, he only defended himself. Case Closed!

Re: #13, I am pretty sure you meant "Canada geese".....but after Justin Castro's recent totalitarian actions, maybe you meant Canadian politicians, although I don't think anyone got near Justin's hatchlings.

Reading the head line I thought that a mailman in California had beaten to death the democrat communist mass murdering governor. Too bad I was wrong.

RE#13 Im not particularly intimidated by birds, until one day a rather large Canada Goose flew right at me. A 20lb bird with a 5' wingspan attempting to dive bomb you will get your attention.

Worked a consulting gig at Ecolab on their Schuman campus. They had monster Wild Turkeys walking around the campus! Near the front door and outdoor lounge area! They were HUGE and we were always ready to give one the boot if he got frisky! Never did though!

There was no need for this disgusting behavior. It is on the edge of being crazy. An air gun used to clean keyboards would have scared this creator and he would have run away.

I was once attacked by a goose and only got away after being bitten several times and finally kicking it.
I’d like to know just what the investigating wild life officials ate for dinner last Thanksgiving.

Have you ever seen the claws on a Turkey? You don't have to be a Pit Bull to damage a mailman.
