How many industries have been damaged or destroyed by high taxes and excessive regulation? A lot. But I have mixed feelings about this one: California cannabis industry on brink as buyers return to dealers.
The cannabis industry in California is on the brink of collapse because of high taxes and onerous regulations that have burdened legal operators and allowed illegal growers to flourish, campaigners have warned.
***
About 75 per cent of cannabis consumed in the state comes from illegal sources, industry figures say. They blame taxes, too much regulation and a failure to tackle illegal competition, which is free from red tape and able to offer cannabis at much lower prices.

LOL - Who didn't see this coming when legalizing and taxing weed was first proposed?

Put marijuana sales under the DMV. That'll make things much better.

My daughter lives in western Oregon. Illegal growers take all the water out of the creek on her property. It is a huge problem.

Putting the argument of whether or not legalization is a smart move any idiot could have predicted this. The only way the money can be taken out of the black market for any substance or product is to make the legal procurement either easier or cheaper than the black market supply. Pot laws have done neither. All the politicians just saw another huge cash cow they could milk for governments bottomless money pit. In their rush to cash in they took all the incentive for a legal market away. So, surprise, after the legal novelty wore off people went right back to the way they have worked for the last 50 years. The only thing that gas changed is the risk for posessing the weed has been taken out of the equation.
And don't be naieve, the big mexican cartels still control the illegal weed market so the number one reason for legalization is a bust. The money still goes to the cartels.

Too greedy. The pols thought they would get a tax bonanza from weed. When some product is priced way over the market other suppliers will step forward and undercut you. In this case, your local independent pharmaceutical salesmen.

Most politician's priorities are focused on the next election. No critical thinking analysis in decision making required -only expedience. Give the people what they want and get re-elected. They know they will likely be out of office, comfortable with their graft loot and with a cushy pension before the adverse results materialize

Legalization in states meant cronyism from the very start with 'licenses' issued to a select few to grow, to sell or both of these. No one understood or explained the content of the licenses or their origin except they sounded official.
Getting into bed with the state is like getting into bed with Darth Vader and the Empire. They're altering the deal. Pray they don't alter it further. Except in this case an alternative to the Empire already existed: the black market. Better stuff, cheaper prices, delivery, delayed payment possible in some cases.

Isn’t it great when you can buy marijuana over the counter but you can’t buy hydrocloriquin or ivermectin with a prescription

Cuba-fornia over-taxed and over-regulated legal pot dealers?!?!?!?
Gee, who could possibly have seen that coming?!?!?!?! Well, pretty much anybody with more than 4 working brain cells -- which leaves out all the lie-berals in Cuba-fornia. In fact, I'm guessing the state legislators who made this mess don't have 4 working brain cells between the bunch of them!!!
It sounds like a Cheech and Chong joke!!!

It's not just taxes, It's California, there is nothing they cannot screw up! High School Dropouts flourish in that industry while Berkley Educated bureaucrats fail miserably...And they call it an "Elite" school..sheesh! or rather BS!

Only one thing can fix it. Make ALL drugs legal! Cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, meth. Let's make it easy for people to kill themselves and drive cars while high as a kite! That will surely get rid of the black market.
