Western film icon Sam Elliot might be next on the regressive left’s list of “people to cancel this month” because he expressed some wrongthink about the American Wild West and gays. I know this sounds confusing. Let me explain. On a recent episode of Marc Maron’s podcast, Elliot made some scathing remarks about the film The Power of the Dog,(Snip) Elliot is of course trending on Twitter, with the usual woke suspects calling for his head because no one is allowed to say “Hey, not everything is gay,” or criticize a woman for trying to force gay stuff into a western.

Bear in mind Elliot is not a "conservative" in any way shape or form, he is solidly Liberal/libertarian. Earlier in the interview he trashes conservative Texas politics/politicians. While his family roots are originally from Texas, he was a Portland Oregon/Sacramento Ca kid. His part starts at 11:30...http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episode-1309-sam-elliott

Makes sense in a way. How many women who weren't married would venture out west a hundred and seventy or a hundred and sixty years ago. My bet, not many. The gold rush had something to do with that.

I agree with Sam Elliot! Gay was not acceptable in the 1800’s! It shouldn’t be today!

Actually watched this "movie" out of curiosity.
On a scale of 1-5, I give it a 0.5. Didn't really like the plot, tempo, acting, or subject matter. Other than that, I was a "good" movie (s/o).

It's not just Westerns. Netflix's Vikings Vahalla went racial equity. Despite historical evidence, Kattigat is now ruled by a "black" female Jarl. No offense, but rewriting history is what authoritarians do. Dont be afraid of history. History is what history is. Learn from it. But get it right or don't do it. Jeesh, Hollywood has gone fubar.

Elliott’s language is tough because he is tough. He and Katherine have a big ranch in Montana too. Nice people. Locals love Sam but he is ROUGH. Thanks Mr. Elliott for trashing that stupid movie!!

Power of the Dog takes place in the mid/late 1920's...Not the "Wild West", but the fenced in West. Still...

Haven't watched the "The Power of the Dog" (almost typed the "Hair of the Dog"). Haven't missed it. Cumberbatch likes to do gay parts so I knew that was in the movie.

In the re-make of All Creatures there is a mixed race couple. In the mid-30's. in rural England. Don't think so. It was a stupid re-make of the original and I didn't watch the second season so I suppose they managed to get a homosexual couple in there somewhere also. ( to be clear, I have absolutely nothing against mixed race couples. It's just that it didn't happen the way it's being portrayed at that time in that place.)

As a part of the rewriting of American history, the LGBTQ community and lifestyle must be inserted and play a prominent part of every rewrite. It is a requirement. There are probably a required number of Black and other minority characters, some in prominent roles who must be written in. Historical accuracy be damned. Equity and diversity is more important to the story than accuracy. I bet the gay cowboys rode unicorns too!

The only flaming gay western figure in the real wild west was Billy Breckenridge in Tombstone Arizona being a real rough lawman during the Earp era and after. He was known to 'tug a rope' but the book about him is an interesting read. Not a fan of Sam Elliot so I'm not interested in his Hollywood tough guy persona responses.

Some New Zealand lefty wants to make the American West into homosexual heaven? I suspect that stuff would quickly get you shot in the real old west.

In "Tombstone" there were two sommat Gay characters, "same sex attracted/attractive" characters, neither blatant, nor was that a major part of the story. The STORY was the story...in too many recent films/TV shows being GAY is "The Story" and everything else is just a "Setting" for it.

Sam Elliott had just finished filming 1883 when he made this interview. 1883 comes as close as any tv show/movie about the trials and tribulations pioneers went thru settling the west. The story is not sugar coated. I take some exception of the story line with Elsa but it is done for dramatic effect. (been thru a tornado and don't know anyone who kissed all the way thru it...) I think what he is saying, after all the westerns he's done, he now has true respect for the ranchers and their ranching families who have worked the land for generations. And, having made much of the show in the Ft Worth/Guthrie, Tx (6666 Ranch) Elliott has a new found respect for real cowboys and lack of respect for anyone doing a western in New Zealand.

In order to destroy the American culture, you have to destroy the old west. What quicker way to do that than to make it sound look like a Fire Island queebie party?
No wonder I dont watch movies, and limit my TV to Bugs Bunny.
