At least six people were stabbed in New York City’s subway system over the weekend, with the first attacks unfolding just hours after Mayor Eric Adams and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul unveiled a new plan to combat violence on public transit, authorities said. Five people were stabbed in the subway system within just over 24 hours after Adams and Hochul revealed a 17-page plan “Subway Safety Plan,” which will see more police and mental health teams deployed across the subway system starting Monday. A sixth person was stabbed on Sunday evening on the 6 line near Canal Street, the

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden abruptly canceled plans on Sunday to go to his home in Delaware for the holiday following a two-hour meeting with his national security team to discuss the Russian threat to Ukraine. The rare Sunday National Security Council meeting began around noon and lasted a little over two hours, according to reporters who watched the attendees arrive and then depart the White House compound. Biden’s planned trip home to Wilmington was also a last-minute addition to the president’s schedule, announced by the White House press office while the Russia-Ukraine crisis meeting was underway in the Situation

The sister of convicted fraudster Bernie Madoff, who swindled more than $50 billion from investors to his company, was found dead Thursday from gunshot wounds with her husband at their Florida home, authorities said on Sunday. Detective discovered Sondra Wiener, 86, and Marvin Wiener, 89, dead in an apparent murder-suicide around 12:55 p.m. in Boynton Beach, the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office said in a statement. It was not immediately clear which of the Wieners is suspected of killing the other and an official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner's office. Madoff died in a federal

Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman on Sunday accused allies of former President Donald Trump of "fanning flames" and encouraging Russia to invade Ukraine amid escalating tensions in the region. "These people and a great deal of the GOP leadership will have blood on their hands. They're fanning flames, encouraging Putin to attack Ukraine," Vindman tweeted. "Putin and his regime perceive opportunities because such fools suggest the U.S. is weak, divided, and distracted." (Snip) Vindman's suggestion that the GOP is creating a divisive climate around the Russia-Ukraine conflict comes as several other Republicans recently complained that President Joe Biden has

MUNICH — In an appeal that was at times bitterly critical of the West, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine urged allies on Saturday to begin sanctioning Russia now rather than wait for an invasion, and he took aim at repeated American declarations that an attack would happen within days. “What are you waiting for?’’ Mr. Zelensky asked a large audience at the annual meeting of the Munich Security Conference, which he attended despite warnings that his absence from Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, could give Russia an opportunity to strike. “We don’t need your sanctions after” the economy collapses and “parts

MINNEAPOLIS — The judge who sentenced white former Officer Kim Potter on Friday to two years in prison for killing Black motorist Daunte Wright cited the difficult job that police face — and Potter’s remorse — as justification for giving her a light sentence. Hennepin County District Judge Regina Chu choked up as she described the difficulty deciding on a sentence for Potter, who said she meant to use her Taser but mistakenly fired her handgun into Wright’s chest as he tried to drive away from a traffic stop in April.
Wright’s family and attorneys angrily condemned Chu, who is

"I've seen with my own eyes the movement of tracked military vehicles on the streets of the city," said a resident of the Belarusian town of Khoyniki, in the southeastern corner of the country not far from the Ukrainian border, when asked about the Russian forces in his country for joint military exercises. "The soldiers have settled in the surrounding forests," the local, who asked not to be identified, added. "They drink a lot and sell a lot of their diesel fuel. They are living in tents." The first Russian troops began arriving in Belarus for the unexpected Union Determination-2022

QUEBEC — True to their word, hundreds of anti-health-restriction protesters have arrived in the streets of the provincial capital. Under the watchful eye of what appeared to be an increased police presence, the first members of the trucker convoy started arriving around 9 a.m. Saturday, driving around the city with Canadian and Quebec flags attached to their vehicles. Police confirmed around noon there had been three arrests, but the mood was festive, with children rolling in the snow near the protesters. It was minus-13 Celsius and snowing. The protesters are not satisfied with the Legault government’s schedule to gradually ease

MINNEAPOLIS - Former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter was sentenced Friday morning to two years in prison after a jury found her guilty of first-degree and second-degree manslaughter in the April 2021 shooting death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright. Presiding Judge Regina Chu said there was no question that Potter is extremely remorseful when she announced a downward departure from state guidelines with a total sentence of 24 months, with 16 months served in prison, and the remaining on supervised release. Potter will receive credit for 58 days served. Chu said she found the facts and circumstances of the case justified

A swimmer on a Sydney beach in Australia died after being attacked Wednesday by what witnesses described as a 4 1/2-meter (15-foot) great white shark. “This person had suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of the attack and there was nothing paramedics could do when we arrived on scene,” New South Wales state Ambulance Inspector Lucky Phrachnanh said. It is the first fatal shark attack in Sydney since 1963. A witness, Kris Linto, said the swimmer was in the water when the shark “came and attacked him vertically.” “We heard a yell and then turned around, it looked like a

SMETHPORT, Pa. — Some Democrats here in rural Pennsylvania are afraid to tell you they’re Democrats. The party’s brand is so toxic in the small towns 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh that some liberals have removed bumper stickers and yard signs and refuse to acknowledge their party affiliation publicly. These Democrats are used to being outnumbered by the local Republican majority, but as their numbers continue to dwindle, the few that remain are feeling increasingly isolated and unwelcome in their own communities. “The hatred for Democrats is just unbelievable,” said Tim Holohan, an accountant based in rural McKean County who

Hundreds of 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) soldiers are gearing up to deploy to Europe as Russian troops have amassed on Ukraine's borders, positioned for a potential invasion. The soldiers from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, are expected to deploy soon and will include a mix of support personnel and ground combat units, a spokesperson told Military.com. It is unclear which European countries these troops will deploy to, but mobilizations of U.S. combat troops to Europe have been concentrated in Poland and Romania, with some support personnel sent to Germany. In total, roughly 6,000 U.S. soldiers are expected to be in place
