An internal poll shows Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan with a big lead in a hypothetical 2022 Senate matchup with Democratic incumbent Chris Van Hollen.
Maryland will elect a new governor in 2022 as Hogan becomes term-limited out of office, and the popular governor has not yet announced his next move. An internal poll shared with the Daily Caller found that, if he chooses to run for Senate, Hogan would currently lead Van Hollen by a 49%-37% margin. While a Senate run has not been ruled out by Hogan, others have speculated he will instead opt to run for president in 2024.

Hogan could be the male version of Liz Chaney, and he does not like Trump.

Hogan is not popular, at least with Republicans and Independents, but Van Hollen is despised.

If elected, Larry Hogan will out-Mitt Mitt. Hogan is one reason I am a former resident of Maryland. He, like his father, is a stab-in-the-back Republican "moderate". There is little doubt that his eyes were set on the Senate, until his clashes with PDT "elevated" him. The man is a skunk. He was instrumental in the "Baltimore Unrest" along with Rawlings-Blake, Mosby, and Malik Shabazz. Rawlings-Blake took the bullet for the others. Larry fell back into his "law and order" persona for the boobs while sticking the Maryland taxpayers with the bill for his malfeasance. No one has ever been prosecuted for any of it. (Police records were a shambles, you see...) Not to be rude, his cancer was his best career move, bringing much sympathy for his fight. Maryland's problems are deeply rooted in that 71% who support Larry in the Baltimore area. OTOH, Van Hollen is no great shakes, either.

President?!? You have to be joking. If this guy runs for President, it’s only because he thinks he can raise more money that way which will be his slush fund in perpetuity.

Not worried about the moderate label, just need Republicans winning so they can stop the stupidity of the democrats.
Even Mitt has held firm on not voting with the democrats' radical agenda.

Running in Maryland against a loathed democrat opponent is not the same as running for President against a loved Trump or De Santis.

Thanks for the background info MDConservative. Although I live in Virginia, I don't follow Maryland politics at all because other than western counties like Garrett - it's all Dem - all the time.

Don't forget Harford and Cecil counties #7. Both counties in the northeast part of the state are conservative.

Hogan. Senate. Whatever. I'm terrified about who will become our next governor. In the back of my mind, I'm thinking about escaping to Virginia...as long as Youngkin is in the driver's seat.

So the question is: will this RINO mark a net gain over a lockstep Dem? That would be one more body toward Republican leadership and retiring Schumer. Beyond that, I don't expect much.

As an ex-Marylander - moved Fall 1996 to NC from the more rural suburbs of northern Balt Co - when MD was basically a 4-4 Dem/Rep state and Robert Ehrlich was my congressman. The '94 governors race is emblematic of MD politics. Glendenning vs. Sauerbrey (my sorta neighbor, lived a mile down the road from her - Jacksonville-Sweet Air). There are 23(?) counties in MD and Ellen Sauerbrey won every county with the exception of Prince Georges (NE DC Beltway) and Baltimore City. Had it been an 'electoral college' type election she won hands down. But somehow, there were 'long lines' at the polling places in the city and they stayed open waaay after the 8pm closing. Glendenning won and Sauerbrey contested it...but you all know how that turned out. Basically if you live outside those two counties, and now it appears Montgomery and Baltimore counties, also, you essentially are a non-entity.
The point here is that there is NO WAY that Larry Hogan would be the type of Republican that could gain national traction in the MAGA era if he could get elected as a Republican in MD.

Like I keep saying. Even when MAGA wins………we LOSE! To think that the Republicans are the answer to our problems is exactly where they want you. Thinking laterally. Left vs Right. Nonsense!
People need to start looking at it vertically. Top vs bottom. The Uniparty is on top and MAGA is on the bottom.
You can fight all you want but you will never win when your fighting the wrong opponent. Because even when you win……..you lose.

There are better choices for Republican 2024 Presidential candidates, Hogan does not impress. Agree with reply 1.

To add to #9, actually most of Maryland is conservative. It's the concentration of Dems in the Baltimore/Washington corridor that dominates the state, though. Believe me, most of the counties would gladly leave the state if they could.

He's a 'moderate' which is code for 'RINO,' but if he caucuses with the GOP, that's a good thing, no doubt.
