Back in 1998, sci-fi TV series The X-Files aired an episode called “Kill Switch” about an AI gone rogue. Told when the internet was still accessed by most using dial-up modems, it was a fascinating tale of technology run amuck, a message about not handing too much of your life over to the digital world. While it might also seem like a sci-fi tale, soon enough the United States federal government could force automakers to install kill switches authorities can access and use to shut down any newer vehicle. To many, that might sound like a wonderful idea. After all, we’ve seen wanted criminals who

Only if we get to install them in every demo-commie politician and bureaucrat. Otherwise, no deal.

They have a kill switch on the internet. Talk about control. All the hysteria about Jan 6 is laying the ground work for Dims to use the internet kill switch against conservatives. They know who we are. We have no backup plan. They could shut down our vehicles en masse, too. Plan on keeping your current vehicles for a LONG time.

Re OP, this article is based on one written in November by former Rep. Bob Barr and published in the Daily Caller - the link is at the end of this article.

Lots of cars have remote kill built into them already -- OnStar, etc.
I ripped out the receiver.

There are already "kill switches" in many semi-trucks. This was put in so that a truck that was idling could be killed because of pollution. Of course it didn't take into account the driver that was sleeping and needed either heat or a/c to stay alive. There were a few cases of a dispatcher getting upset at a driver and killing their truck as they went down the highway.

Some enterprising person will come up with a way to disconnect said switch and probably make a zillion dollars...

I suggest we test them on politicians first.

Inevitably some vehicle that loses control when its 'kill switch' is activated will careen into somebody or something and cause a crippling injury or death. The lawmakers who want this ought to debate the legal ramifications before unleashing it on the public.

I'm reminded of the time I worked for GM and was responsible for testing the ignition switches installed inside the driver's seat of vehicles. The car would not start unless the person was sitting in the correct position on the driver's seat, and the seat belt fastened. That job lasted all of four weeks. Then it was scrapped because of the negative feedback from almost everyone. Like the kill switch, the ignition thing was a government idea to enforce seatbelt usage. The kill switch, if enacted, will end up the same as the ignition gambit.

There's no electronic gadget that can be installed that can't be uninstalled. There will always be a way around it even if they could develop one. It's like those "take a breath-o-lyzer before starting" devices they've wanted to install in cars since the 1980's or the "smart triggers" for handguns, there are just too many real life scenarios where it would be totally impractical to have such things.

Real criminals who do not want to stop and be arrested will simply disable or remove the so-called “kill switch” from their vehicles; can you imagine the police chasing a vehicle on a busy interstate highway, say in Los Angeles, hit the kill switch button and activate the “kill switches” on hundreds of vehicles traveling nearby on that highway.

Sure, what could possibly go wrong? So far it has been proven any device can be hacked so need a car jack, send the kill signal.

They really DO hate our ability to hop in our PRIVATELY OWNED automobiles and drive WHEREVER we want, whenever we choose. That just galls the hotshot rich. They want that reserved only for THEM.

For every action their is an equal and opposite reaction. Someone will make millions overriding the kill switch.

Re OP, what used to be a rhetorical quip "I have some property here in the Everglades for sale", doesn't have the same impact it once had. Compared to Chicago, Detroit, LA, NYC, SF, DC, etc., the everglades is down right inviting. Oh, and a heck of lot safer too!

I could not find this news in any 'respected' news outlet, only on car sites. If people think this is baloney, I have some property here in the Everglades for sale.
