According to a recent report, Amazon is aware that many owners of its Alexa devices are not using them after as little as two weeks of use. According to internal documents viewed by Bloomberg, as many as 25 percent of Amazon’s smart home assistants become expensive paperweights just weeks after being activated. A recent report from Bloomberg reveals that Amazon knows that users of its Alexa devices are not utilizing the full capabilities of the smart home assistant, and often are becoming bored with the device as quickly as two weeks after getting it. The internal Amazon documents viewed by Bloomberg included a number of interesting statistics and details

This has always seemed like one of those dopey gadgets that some bought to be on the “cutting edge” and others bought as gifts for people (like parents) when they didn’t have a better idea.
Agree with OP.

There will never be any of this voice activated / listen for command crap in my house. I don't even like the smartphone being anywhere near me. You can never be sure what Google might be doing with their Android OS. For all we know, it listens full time and sends recordings to NSA, too. Apple is no better.

We got our 'dot' 2 years ago. We use it all day as a music source. When we don't have it playing music it is unplugged.
When it is playing, it isn't 'listening'.
Just remember to 'unplug' it when it isn't playing and it is a good entertainment source.

Alexa owners might not be using the devices, but no doubt the agencies that fund them are. How stupid do you have to be to buy a surveillance device, then pay for the internet connection that enables it? The Stasi could never have imagined such a thing.

We were given one 3 years ago as a Christmas gift. A few weeks ago I took it, still in its original cellophane wrapper, and donated it to the Habitat for Humanity resale store.

#3 - I am pretty sure most of those Amazon Alexa devices have battery backup, and are active even when unplugged. Maybe the Dot is different - I don't know. When I was looking at the technology a while back, I ran across something that said that they went into a sleep mode that still listened, which was why I decided I would never have that nonsense in my house.

They don't care if we use them or not because they've already been paid for, and, if plugged in, can still spy on you. And that is where they can make big money.
I won't have one in my house. An expensive paperweight is the right description.

The 25% unused figure is consistent for consumer electronics in general. Surveys have shown that through the years.
What is newsworthy is that the maker has direct evidence that the devices remain unused. That means they have direct data - all sorts of data, it seems - from the 75% sold and in use.

These devices record every command you make and every tune you play. Seems useless except if you were to say decide to run for office as a conservative in a few years, they would use all that information to try and smear you. That’s what it’s all about.

We got one as a gift a few years ago and used it for music for a couple of weeks. After that, nada. We still have it stored in the attic somewhere. It's hard to escape the surveillance nationwide. Every time you use your credit card, you are signalling what you buy and products you like. That is supposed to be private, but I may have been born in Georgia, but it wasn't yesterday. I do what I can...use DDG, empty my history daily, etc. but it's impossible to elude all the spying.

Don't care about being spied upon. Am not doing anything illegal, immoral or interesting. There is a commercial saying some guy is the most interesting person on the planet. Maybe. I am definitely the most uninteresting person. Stopped using the voice command stuff because it rarely works. Just use the remote controls. Alexa discriminates against mutes.

My daughter sent me one last year, and I returned it to Amazon unopened. Used my credit to buy some gourmet coffee.

Mine went into the trash after I read that Amazon listens to conversations going on in the rooms where they're located. I do miss listening to music on it.

Self-bugging doesn't appeal to me. My brother has or at least had one of these things. I watched and listened, didn't comment.
When my wife and I were on our way home we agreed that we wouldn't have one if they paid us.

My hubby’s sister sent us one several years ago for Christmas. I never opened it & sold it for half the cost in a yard sale! Sadly, it was one of the first things sold that day.

Amazon is obviously not collecting the amount of intelligence that they anticipated. Once people see proof in their e-mail stream and texts that prove Alexa has been listening and reporting, they realize what the device was made for. Besides, who needs another female mouth in the house, although Alexa does listen more than she speaks.

I have nothing I want to hide except maybe the large amount of ammunition that I have purchased since 2008. I would imagine that there are millions of people with the same addiction out there.

#3: An honest question. How do you stop it or change the tune if it's playing and doesn't 'listen'?

We have a couple of them. They are used 100% for music. I honestly have no idea what else they could be used for. But the radio stations here basically suck, so we can listen to our favorite radio stations from other places, and well as albums on Spotify.
Our phones and computers spy on us all the time. We have Google Fiber for our Internet service, and you know anything with "Google" in the title is a huge spy system. Our "smart TV's" spy on us. I certainly don't say anything in the privacy of my own house that I wouldn't say to your face.
Unless you live 100% off the grid, you are being spied on. Fear it or own it, your choice. I'm too old to fear it!!!

People who give up their personal information without a thought about what the consequences will be for doing so will not give one whit about their inalienable rights. Then there are people like me and you who do care about our rights but are out numbered by dolts who are easily distracted by shiny objects. It is encouraging that alexa isn't being slavishly used by more people. For now.

My Alexa only knows two commands: Alexa, play Willie's Roadhouse and Alexa, where's my phone. No one here but me so no conversations to record. I enjoy it almost all day every day.

A couple were having a conversation in their home, when the wife started fussing at her husband for speaking in rather quiet voice.
"Why are you whispering? Speak Up!" she said.
"I think these voice-activated devices are listening in on our conversations." he replied.
"That's SILLY!" she replied.
And she laughed.
And Alexa laughed.
And Siri laughed.
And Cortana laughed.

Funny this topic should come up, true story, I bought Alexa so I could listen to conservative radio stations which I cannot get clearly on my radio, yes radio. I swear that whenever the stations talk too negatively about progressives, the station either gets static or goes silent and Alexa tells me she cannot get that station! I always ask Alexa if she’s f…ing with me but she doesn’t respond. I wait a couple seconds and tell her again to put on that station which she miraculously finds. I truly believe they are screening what I listen to but I continue because I leave a message telling Alexa to tell her boss I’m on to them. Yes I know, I sound insane but if they are really listening I assume they’re getting my message. Anyone else having this problem with Alexa?

An encouraging sign.
Big Brother doesn't have to put cameras and microphones in everyone's home - some people do it willingly. And just how do they know if an Alexa is being used or not, eh?
