DETROIT — Caitlin Reynolds, a single mother, was happy that her son, L.J., was finally settled into fourth grade after a rocky experience last year with remote learning. Then, on Wednesday, Nov. 17, an announcement: Detroit public schools would close its classrooms every Friday in December. There would be virtual school only. On Friday, a follow-up announcement: School was also canceled starting that Monday, for the entire week of Thanksgiving. This time, there would be no online option. “You need to take the kids back out again?” Reynolds said. “How is that not going to be harmful to these students?”

I guess teachers need more paid vacations. If it was up to the teachers union there would never be any in classroom teaching. Teachers would Zoom the entire school year in their pajamas.

I thought that 'education' was a local situation. I remember that in my home state of Michigan that the 16th township of a county was called the 'school township' where the school would be located. It was bad enough when the state took the oversite of schools, but how and when did it become a national situation?
Not a single good thing has come out of the federal government running the schools.
I pulled my son out of public school in the fall of his third-grade year when I accidentally overheard a young female 'teacher' belittling him in front of the class. He went on to be heavily recruited by the Marines and the Air Force. He became a field medic in Afghanistan, picking up several medals along the way for the work he did under fire. It was what I knew and expected that he would do because he was taught to love his country.

Take your kids out of these school systems permanently, and either homeschool or find a parochial school for them. The government-run school systems have become political indoctrination centers and tools for social engineering and political leverage. Learning useful things has become a secondary aim, at best.

Here in Middle Georgia, the schools are open and business as usual, football, basketball, marching band are in full swing…

Seems like there are some good business opportunities here - opening private schools. Maybe private schools can be selective by testing students before admission. That way, they can keep out the disruptive and dummies that slow down and take away from the good students. ...real quality education like it used to be.

Is this because Muslims take Fridays off for religious reasons. Detroit is full of them.

Schools shut down for a year, at least one parent needs to quit work and stay home(in those families that even have two parents) FINALLY schools reopen, parent can go back to work, suddenly have to tell New Boss..."Uhm I can't work on Fridays anymore.." Right after telling New Boss..."Oh by the way....I cannot come in to work ALL Thanksgiving week"

The teachers union is the worst thing that ever happened to education. Parents might as well go for private school or homeschooling. I know, for working mothers this could be a big problem, but your child's future is on the line. I feel sorry for kids today and the garbage they are being taught.

Attending public school is also harmful to the students. It's a no-win situation.

Teacher burnout? After a year and a half off? Perish the thought that they should actually have to show up and do what they've been paid to do!
And "teachers asking for help resigning?" What's so hard about that? If they're that helpless, they need to be shown the door - literally.

Covid has changed a lot of thigs. Teachers used to work their 5 days per week with apparently no issues before March 2020 when the big Covid school shut downs began. Now, the Teachers Union (Randi Weingarten) is enjoying their new found power over everyone and is exercising it with zeal! Covid has become their excuse for everything and the Union's own policies and demands have led to the supposed "burn out" and shortages. If there will only be 4 days per week of school, then the teachers salaries should be adjusted to reflect 4 day per week of work. Benefits should also reflect the reduction in work hours also. Bet the "burnout" would suddenly go away. Interesting how only public schools are having this problem. I never hear about religious schools or private schools needing to cut days or hours due to teacher burn out or being overworked.

The real reason the parents are furious: they don't have taxpayer-funded for their urchins on Fridays. No, it is not about the chillrenn..... the parents have to pay for or provide childcare elsewhere on Fridays.
At goobermint schools, children are not getting an education. They're getting left-wing/socialist/communist/multi-culti indoctrination, you can be sure..

The public schools find one reason after another for canceling classes. Their operation needs to be ripped away from the government and given to a results-oriented entity.
