It was 4 in the morning, and my wife’s Subaru was a crumpled wreck on the side of the road in Northeast Minneapolis. Hours earlier, I had left it in North Mississippi Regional Park on the city’s Northside neighborhood. The Minneapolis police had rolled through the lot, and a cop on a bullhorn sternly instructed all the teens and 20-somethings gathered for the Friday-night slideshow to disperse. I was there to meet my chaperone for the night..

I remember riding with a friend across a two lane bridge over the St. Johns River at 125 mph in his Fiat Spider in 1969. And in 1971 dropping the hammer in a borrowed GTO Judge against a SS396 Chevelle with headers showing in the wheel wells on the interstate in Jax late at night, topping 140 before we slowed for a curve. And outrunning the cops in a friend's E-Jag in small town central Florida once. But another friend outran them one too many times with his 326 LeMans Pontiac....they were waiting at his house when he got home. He had to sell the car to pay the ticket. Two years later, I was 20 and happened to be thinking of some of those events, and shaking my head at how stupid a 17-18 year old can be.....even from the 'lofty' perch of an "old" 20 year old, it was clearly a bunch of bad choices. Glad we never wrecked. None of my friends or I ever wrecked a car doing this stuff.
